bit of info
here is a bit of history copied and pasted from one of my other threads
P1 Body styling mock up?(p1was actually a rwd mk1fiesta with mk2 front inner wings and a Hewland FGB trans axle in the back)
P2 - Mechanical installation mock up
P3 Same as P2
P4 The 1st mule using the Porsche transaxle and able to be driven
P5 - The first complete car shown to the press. White in colour used as show car.
P6 - White body shell designated for Monte Carlo.
P7 - Rally car (registered WVW101W a LHD drive car fitted with a Hart 420R
motor. Destroyed during testing in Portugal by Ari Vatanen.
P8 - Silver/white/red road car used by SVE?
P9 - Road car handed to SVE for durability trials. John Wheeler crashed and
destroyed this car.(believe P8 and p9 to be the same car written off and became the red LWB car in picture above on 25/10/1982
P10 Rally car (LHD) registered WVW100
P11 Road car used for torsion testing. Later it was converted to LHD and used for
emission testing.
P12 Road car in LHD form used for seat belt testing. The shell of this car was one
of the two shells that were exported to SA along with the rally cars. Registered
FPU738Y it ended up at the Ford factory in Port Elizabeth. When bought by
Mike Budd the body was badly rusted. Mike bought a complete XR3 shell
from Ford and over a period of fifteen years rebuilt the car to RHD. The
completed body shell with all the bits and pieces was sold to a buyer in the UK
at the end of 2008.
P13 Road car that went straight to SVE after completion. The shell of this car was
one of the 2 shells sold to Ford SA. It too was bought by Mike Budd and built
up. When bought the body was built to SA rally spec by the factory. Mike
fitted a BMW engine and drive train. This car was sold to a dealer in the UK.
P14 No reference. A show car was inserted between P13 and P15. This could have
been P5 revived.
P15 Road car (RHD). Blue in colour. Extensively tested by Malcolm Wilson this
car came to SA along with the two rally cars and two body shells. It was later
used for a road test by a local motoring magazine. When Mick Jones returned
to the UK he sold the car to Brian Bell. Bell then sold the car to Malcolm
Wilson who still owns the car to this day.
P16 Rally car LHD?
P17 Rally car LHD. Came to South
Africa where it was rallied by Malcolm Wilson. When Ford disinvested in SA
Mick Jones bought the car. Together with Serge Damseaux they raced the car
at various circuits. Jones sold the car to Geoff Page from East Coast Racing
who intended racing the car in the UK Thundersaloons.the car that came back was painted black and was now RHD? However the car was
not successful and was given to Gordon Spooner to be restored. Shortly after
it was restored, the car was bought by a collector from the USA.?
defiantly not LHD
p10 - is the USA car,p10 has not got the rear fire wall p17 had the same rear fire wall as p18
The number 5 car is the LHD p17 the car at the back is p18,look carefully at the parcel shelf of p17 it needs the same fire wall arangement in the boot to sit on as this picture of p18
This is the usa cars boot
notice that there is no fire wall and nothing for the parcel shelf to sit on
also the USA car doesn't have the SA spec fuel cap location
P18 Rally car . The RHD rally car that was sold to Ford SA along
with P17 as one LHD car and one RHD car arrived in SA in 1983. It won the
1985 Nissan International Rally. It was later sold to Simon Nutter in the UK.
Nutter sold the car to Christian de Wolff in Germany. Now owned by Brian Betridge in the UK
Of the four road cars pictured, only one is LHD. The blue one and the red one are both RHD and were the most advanced, same spec as p17 and p18,the two white cars are slightly older spec lhd p12 and the other p13 rhd. If you were to reshell a works spec RST which body would you use,the blue furthest developed nicest car,one of the older spec cars or the red same spec car as used to build the works rally cars?.
lets say that the road car that John wheeler wrote off stayed wrote off and never came to SA. p12 p13 p15 p18 are accounted for in the uk,p10 is in the usa,so what happened to the LHD p17 and how did it become RHD not that easy to convert a mk3 escort from LHD to RHD like you can with a mk2 escort, was a clone made in SA easy enough to do if you had the blue prints that the owner of p12 has now? and then what happened to it when it came back to the UK? was the picture of the black RSt taken in the UK or in SA?
I have been told that Ronnie Graham bought two shells from ford in the intention of running them in the ovals,I have been told that Mike Budd had a shell which he got from the factory at PE that had been left out side and the sea air had badly rusted the body. That makes three cars and three shells, mike spent 15 yrs converting the lhd p12 into a brand new xr3 shell with the help of the rs1700t's blue prints,I was also told that the blue SA spec p13 was bought off Ronnie Graham by Mike Budd then sold on to some one who butchered the floor pan and fitted a Mazda zetec turbo and a BMW gearbox and diff.so what happened to the third shell?was there ever a third shell if there was could it have been the red RHD shell and sold to Mick Jones to re shell p17?,any help you guys can give would be much appreciated, I am not out to prove any body wrong and if my interpretation is also proved to be wrong then that is fine also, what is important to me is that my favourite model of car, which little is known, is brought out in to the open and the information and pictures are shared with like minded enthusiasts, kind regards Paul
p13 is the white road car top right RHD.

Dave not Claire.
just seen this. i remember shitting my pants working in Brian Bells garage when he owned P15. having to use steps and run cables next to an iconic car was making me nervous. Brian was quite interested that i knew what it was.
