rusty the red rs2000 4x4 *RUST IN PIECE. MOONDUST MK5 PROJECT IS GO!*
#82
I'm sure that the actual main floorpan is basically the same apart from the prop mounting points, the tunnel isn't any deeper to accomodate the prop and floor carpets are the same on a 2wd and 4x4, etc. At the rear, the spare wheel well is shallower and offset to accomodate the diff. I think the chassis legs are also basically the same apart from the captive nuts for the rear subframe on the 4x4.

hit a bit of a barrier with old rusty, i spotted another, far rarer, mk5b 4x4 that i just had to save from the breakers. unfortunatly the wife gave me the ultimatum, rusty or the mk5b, i knew deep down that i wouldnt have the time to save them both, but the mk5b being the rarer of the two, plus the fact that it has a hell of a lot less rust issues ive made my choice and poor old rusty will now be totally stripped and sent off to the scrapyard in the sky.
sad times, but its parts will live on!
so yeah, i need to change the name of this resto thread soon lol, il post pics of the new one up over the next few days, and garys epic engine build will still be happening so theres that to look forward to!
once you see the new motor i think you will all agree that ive made the right choice

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
the down side of it being sat up for years Stu. I need to crack on with mine and see what's what with it. I kick myself for not buying a tidy mk5b 4x4 a while back, ive not seen the garage owner for a while who had it.

that's true Stu, i was up the unit on Friday working on the fiesta and had a quick look at the rs. Its still nice and dry but covered in thick dust lol. I would be interested to see how bad mine is compared to yours

right here we go! got the last of my work bits into the new garages today, and moved the mk5b into the new man cave
so thats that, ive decided to use a third garage up the yard for my vast amount of spares until i get the chance to sell the bits i dont need, i did a bit of stripping on the mk5b earlier (couldnt redist!) so ive already got a door stripped down, some interior trim and all the seats out with fixings bagged and tagged, but now with a space on the drive i need to bring the mk5b donor car home as its sitting on a good mates driveway and his missus isnt too happy about it! donor will need stripping right down to bare shell and then scrapping as its rust issues rival those of even rusty the red, once the donors outta the way it will be rustys turn to grace the driveway for another strip down to bare shell and then his final journey to the crusher. THEN i can carry on stripping the mk5b lol so got my work cut out for the summer!

cheers mate, the previous owner must have liked to tinker with cars too as theres a huge rsj in the roof with 4 holes in the middle which suggests to me block and tackle

been cracking on with the strip down of the silver mk5a, despite having the donor AND rusty the red to do, i couldnt resist and kept finding my way back to the man cave lol. thought id best start with the negatives, some rusty bits ive found
thats about it for rust so far, im yet to get underneath but i know the sills are shot already, chassis looked fine from what i saw when she was up on the transporter so fingers crossed!
heres how shes left for now
my lad giving me a hand on the donor car lol

on friday i noticed there where two different types of locking wheel nut on the wheels, but no key socket supplied with the car! teied the old bang a socket over it etc and they must have been torqued on. bent my spare socket extension like a banana, so i ordered a removal kit off ebay.
kit turned up today and managed to get the front wheels off before one of the nuts got proper wedged in the socket lol, dunno how im gonna get it out! anyway i got front suspension off today, driveshafts out and did a bit more of the loom, anothe couple of hours on the loom and then its engine gearbox removal time!

who's ready for some more rust!?!?
both sills are in a similar state. someones done a bang tidy repair job on this exhaust though!
another tidy repair i uncovered
not sure wether to restore this steering wheel or not
sure i will find more once its up on a spit! gonna tackle the suspension, and front and rear subframes next before taking the engine and gearbox out. making good progress though.
rusty the red is also now ready to come home, torn between getting rusty home or bringing the escort van home lol, heres some more pics
heres the fun part lol, bit of surface rust, but check out the exhaust. quality installation!
and a quick one of the mk6 4x4
nice cruise down to sheerness, flat out over the bridge was fun lol

Not much of an update as ive not done a great deal over the last month or so. Busy woth holidays, kids and ford fair. Took another pic of the exhaust and the mystery repair job on the mid section, got the rear suspension and sub frame off in one lump ready for the big strip down and clean up. Will upload pics tonight.
Also now got rusty on my driveway with a car cover over it, and the escort van parked across the road! Considering its been hardly driven thos year, its bloody quick! Will be takimg it for an mot soon, im prepared to hear the worst after discovering the exhaust lol, also i cant locate the fuel filter anywhere which tells me there isnt one! It still has the diesel tank!
My plans keep changing, i want to get the mk5b stripped fully and up onto a rolling jig, then i can strip the rest of rusty. Im going to chop most of it to bits to use as practice panels for welding and spraying so there wont be a great deal to scrap. Im also tempted to cut out the suspension mounts and fittong them in the van, but thats another project a lomg way away from happening!
