Default Zakspeed grp 5 jagermeister capri replica

well after 4 years im finally back in a ford.

I was originally looking for a mk1 capri but I happened to see the mk3 zakspeed capri when looking at body panels and I had to have one
they are sure rare and kits are few and far between so not the easiest of projects.

here is what im going to try and replicate

they are space frame race cars, but I have bought a nice tidy 2.8i and I plan on keeping the interior all original.
suspension I will keep as standard as possible but it must look right aswell so im going to have to see how I go with that part

I did set a budget of £2500 for the base car but after seeing 2 at that price they were complete crap.
so last night I bought a 1987 2.8i capri with just 55000 miles on the clock with fsh backed up by every mot im now the 5th owner ford being the first as it was a demonstrator.
it cost me £4400 with a very small ammount of rust but im happy with the price as a 25000 mile minter sold last week for £9900.

the car has perfect oil pressure 35 psi idle, 50 psi 2k rpm up.
doesn't overheat due to new 3 core rad and kenlowe fan.
all suspension and brakes are new.
12 month old full capri club exhaust sounds awesome.
lsd and box work perfect and leaves 2 fat blackies on launch mode
starts, runs and drives as well as any capri can.
interior also super mint for age except a small crack on dash top, the usual heater blower motor broken and drivers seat bolster has faded slightly just on the corner but no rips or tears.
an honest car and an honest seller.

so heres the car I bought

I have pre ordered a full zakspeed replica kit includeing the rear spoiler.
its currently being made and should be ready January time.
heres the kit

I have also found some wheels.
the original wheels are 16x10j fronts, 19x12,5j rears !

I can only get upto 18" but I can get them in any offset I like as there custom made wheels.
so I plan on going just 1" smaller all round.

so 18x11.5j rears
15 by 9j fronts, maybe 16" fronts if I fit bigger brakes and need more clearance for caliper

heres the image rim ive been advised on

first up I need to get the car on the ramp and carefully remove the front wings as they are worth a few quid being genuine ford items.

Didnt take you long to start a resto thread lol.

Have you not thought about air ride suspension. So you can adjust the height of the suspension.

Will keep an eye on this thread cause it will be interesting.

Happy days mate!! Look forward to the progress!!

What running gear you gonna use!?

I still think a sleeved down bda is the way forward 👍

nothing mad like that mate, I will just set the ride height so I can clear speed bumps. I can run 2" lowering blocks on the back, and I think I can lower the front 3" ok may just need to adjustable bottom arm/top mount to keep the camber sensible.

im not commited to anything yet though first thing is to get the kit held in place with car sitting at the height the bbm wheels will put it at and see what I can do from there.
a bit of arch gap wont be an issue as long as the rims sit flush with the arch lip.

all the running gear that's there will stay.
im not looking for anything mad ive got a 450 r32 gtr and a 640 hp r33 gtr so im not going mad.

front brakes I will no doubt upgrade.
engine, gearbox and lsd are all mint with just 55000 miles so the engine should take abit of boost ok upto around 230 hp.
interior will be staying all stock, thank god its got pas as the front rims are likely gonna be 9js lol

I agree it does feel a shame but if im gonna make a quality rep its no good starting with a rusty turd so I bought this one.
it will also save me a lot of time and money doing repairs, I can be concentrating on the important bit, the kit and wheels

Looks a cool project mate. Just a thought, what are the side mouldings like on it? My uncle is after a mint set for his brooklands. Guess you wont be using them with the kit. Cheers

well ive just spoke to nick whos making the kit.
I need to leave the wings on as apparently it will be a lot easier to fit the kit if I use some of the original wings.

ive been searching for tyres i can run 295/35/18 rears at 26.1"
i can get a 265/35/16 fronts which are 23.3"
however i do it i must gain 2" total tyre size front to back, i will get nearer 3"

EDIT 265/35/16s aren't available at all it was a listing error ffs

that will give me a 1" drop nose to tail.
i can then lower the whole car 2" but if that isn't enough im gonna need eccentric top mounts, coilovers etc.
at least the small front tyre will give me over 1" head start
and make the car nose down slightly which it needs to do to look right.

cheers ade wheels are awesome mate, expensive but worth it.
ive measured my stock wings and nick measured the kit wings and they work out about 5" wider at the arch !
the stock wheels sit about 1" in so im gonna aim to put the bbm rims the same.
gonna need some crazy -offset to get them out far enough, il get them as wide as i can so as to keep the scrub radius as good as i can.

i just wana get cracking but gotta be patient its gonna be a long haul this one

yep I got a barn full of em lol

Chrysler is on the back burner now.

tbh though the old skyline and the Datsun v8 kit car are just about done
and the r32 gtr and the r33 gtr are done.
they are all like investments ie the money is there if I want it with some profit aswell.

this project is a little different as it is just something I want to do , it is going to cost me money and it will never be recouped but I don't care as its something to keep forever a proper one off
i am really looking forward to it especially as ive got such a good car to start with

i have spent hours looking for different tyre sizes.
the smallest i can find are 245/35/17 tyres readily available and only 23.75" total diameter i plan on 10j rim
rears readily available 295/35/18 total diameter 26.1" i plan on 12j rim

i would like the rear rim to be 3" bigger than the front but the tyre options for 15" and 16" wont get me down to below 24" total size.

my offsets for the rims im gonna need approx.

17x10j -80 fronts
18x12j - 57 rears

rears im not bothered i cant see it making much difference, its just the scrub radius on the front im a little worried about, i can go wider with the rim and go in more towards the hub to keep the scrub radius heading negative but i will have to run big wide tyres 26" total diameter and i will loose the effect it needs with the bigger wheels on the back.
also with 12j rims on the front the steering will be bad id imagine with 295s on

I am thinking I should make the kit bolt on rather than blending it in ?

the original cars were all bolt on panels as long as I get the panel fit right I think it could still look good.
at least then its all removable to work on it.

if im gonna do that I need to remove the front wings and make them bolt on then I can permanent fix the front bodykit wings to the original wing tops.

they talk of a frost tonight so I may be able to get the capri on the ramp tomorrow

From a body repairers and painters point of view i would 100% reccomend to bolt them on, fiberglass wide arch kits always crack no matter how well there fitted

I am planning on it mate tbh, I am also thinking of expanding foaming the inside of the panels once there fitted and in position to help stiffen them up and give them some extra support.

i have done some calcs and measureing from stock with the 23.8" tyres on 17s 10j rims i will have 2.75" more positive scrub radius than standard, or i will have to run the wheels 2" in and only have 1.75" positive scrub radius.

with the rims/tyres recessed in the arches 2" is gonna look naff i think, so at 1" in from the arch lip gonna have 2.75" scrub radius question is how would it drive ?

assumeing the capri is 0 scrub radius stock i will be pivoting 1.5" in from the inside of the tyre !
having said that it is gonna be running some camber where i lower it 2" so there will be less weight on the outside of the tyre anyways.

it doesn't have to handle like a racing car just look like one but does need to drive ok and be safe if pushing it though.

if I can get 12" wide rims/tyres all round with a -57 offset I will have 125mm 5" wider track width and 1mm less inner clearance that should keep scrub radius acceptable.
but I cant find 12" wide tyres for a 15",16" or 17".

ive had a quick look under the car today and wheel geometry isn't looking good !

I will need to measure it all exactly on the ramp but it looks to me like the capri stock has a positive scrub radius of approximately 2" 50mm

if I run my 10" wide rims where I want to run them the pivot point will be inside the tyre !

assumeing the car has 1.5" of tyre inside the pivot point all I can do is run a rim in stock inside position and extend out 3" more that will put me at 3.5" positive scrub radius.
cars have run 4" so im working on that's my absolute limit and even then it will be far from ideal but still work just be abit snatchy on rough roads.

so far that will get me 3" out further than the stock rim with what should still be a driveable offset and use the stock bilys.

wether that will be enough to look half respectable remains to be seen....

also ive noticed the front arches on the capri theres a big lip from the top of the arch to the top of the wing.
on the kit there is hardly any, im never going to get the car low enough I don't think so the arches may have to come down lower on the kit to make it look right.

Not much progress get your finger out

for front suspension ya could always use offset top mounts and adjustable TCA's to gain an inch,
but seen as your hacking up a perfectly good capri anyway why not raise and extend out the top mounts ive done it a few times on widetrack rally cars it'll allow ya run better offset wheels or just ring bernie and leepu for some custom spacers

lol

I cant do much til I get the kit.

I need to see where the kit sits with my intended tyre size and go from there.
same with the widths if an extra 3" will do then im good to go hopefully.

once its on the ramp I will be having a proper inspect of the underside and checking what scrub radius is now exactly.

thanks boys I do love a project.

ive got to many really but its about time I had a ford and what better than a zakspeed rep

looking at the wurth rep the rear wheels look awesome but the fronts to far in and to small.
they should be much bigger at the rear than the front but when there to small for the arch im thinking it looks worse.

the only front tyre option is a 245/35/16 which is the same as stock at 22.75" but will only give me 10" width so 2" short by my calculations.

which brings me to another option I have, still assumeing I keep the inside of the rim in stock position so as to keep the steering axis at least in the tyre contact patch I need 12j rims all round.

now to do this I will need to buy all 4 rims as 18x12js but I can fit the fronts with 285/30/18s and the rears with 335/30/18.

the front of the car will be lifted 1" but it will also give 1" more tyre all round in the arch filling it up better.
and rear will be 1.5" higher but I can still fit 2" lowering blocks in the rear
I don't know how low the front will go at least another 1" id hope maybe more....

the downside is I will have to sacrifice 1" up front of my lowering capability to accommodate the bigger front tyre.
but in my mind I think id rather have the car a little higher and wider with bigger wheels filling the arches than a pee wee wheel lost in the arch lol

stock tyres are 22.7" im looking at 24.7" front 26" rears.

I would like a 16" or 17" front rim but the tyres sizes just aren't available for a low profile 12j rim, the problem is the bbm desing is only made upto 18" but I have enquired if they would make me a 19"

at least im figuring all this shit out so I can raise the car under the stock tyres with the kit held in place and get a feel for what is going to work best.

my skyline has 275/30/19 front tyres and that drives ok so hopefully the capri will be ok with just 10mm wider.

or if I went for the bps rim desing with the centres gold

I can get them upto 20" rim, I could run a 18" front then and a 19" or 20" rear rim to keep the front to rear rim difference dimensions more accurate.
I think id go 19" tbh with a 305/30/19 tyre but there is a 305/30/20 also available and there super cheap second hand McLaren tyres

with the 20" rim I then get into huge rear overall sizes of 27" which is gonna fill the arch but jack the car up even more.
I guess I will just have to try and balance it out.

im swaying towards 18s all round for overall better look what do you think boys and girls ?

18"s would be better don't over do it.
I've 18"s on the Cortina and I think it looks ok.

Cant wait for it to start taking shape.

those are the sizes the rims should be im sure but it just looks awful.
I gotta fill that arch up and out without lifting the car to high and also try and keep some ratio of front to back as she must sit nose down abit aswell.
