Default 1.7 pumka - puma ka

Managed to win a mk5 fiesta zetec s rolling shell with running puma 1.7 engine and clifford alarm on ebay (by accident) for 113 quid so decided to stick the lot in my ex write off little ka run about for a laugh. Miss the frp But this'll be faster!!! Lol.

So far I've ripped the engine and wiring out of the fiesta (which is getting scrapped) and am part way through sorting the new loom ready for the transplant.

The air con and power steering are going for ease of installation and MORE POWER!!

I have now test fitted fiesta 1.25 non ac non pas auxiliary belt and tensioner and can confirm that they fit. Gonna do the timing belt too though whilst its accessible.

Ordered a non pas rack off ebay but apparently the column will be different so we'll see what needs changing when it comes.

Got a zetec s stainless system with mild steel manifold off ebay.

Got a full set of ford racing ka suspension legs off of chris birkbeck and an astra back beam (funnily enough the same as the early ka beam but with factory spacers approx 5mm).

Fiesta shell had the zetec s front calipers and discs so they'll be going on.

Here are the pics so far.......

Oh aye, yeh. Just measure her up. Loads of 6pk belts on ebay in all sorts of different lengths. Easy peasy.
Puma engines are the dog's.
Not a massive amount of power but they're light as fawk, share the same gearbox as the fiesta/ka/escort etc and are ten a penny

Dunno really nick. Engine And brakes only cost me 100, 15 for the belt and tensioner. Gonna make the mount myself. Not tuning the puma engine yet, the screenshot i posted is just an option for the future. Seen a few people turbo the ka motors but you're very limited by how far you can go. If i can get double the power, reli
ably for a few hundred quid i'll be happy

Was wondering how long it'd take for someone to point that out nathan! Lol. Top program! Some quality m**j on it too

Nope, not a welder buddy. Hoping not to use one to be honest. Wanna make a simple bolt on mount. (Fingers crossed).
Nah, i've ordered an engine mount designed for a high power speed boat. Should do the job Designed to be oil and fuel resistant + survive sea water so chances are the rest of the ka will just rust around it

Oh right! That sounds the biz. I wonder what other types they make, as my rally car ripped standard engine mounts apart every few rallies And pmsl, they do rot a bit

I've been having a look round and there are all sorts of different ones. They go up to a few tons per mount and are tested to withstand 6Gs of force. They are also tested upside down and designed that if they fail, the mount will still hold the engine. All come completely weather and fuel/oil proof too. If you can fabricate the solid parts of the mounts yourself then you're laughing.

What is it you're rallying? What car club are you with?

I was thinking about this conversion the other day, makes so much more sense than a 2.0 conversion for a track car as the SE is so much lighter. Easy 150-160bhp too!

If I wasn't going ZT in a KA then I'd definitely go down this route too.

converted a KA myself a couple of yrs ago, unfortunately its not just as easy as swap an engine mount and it fits, you need to alter the driveshaft length, custom make a drivers side mount, either use a ka gearbox, or make a custom gearbox mount, then you have got to get the wiring to work and the PATS if you want the Puma engine to run correctly and loads of other little tweaks.

everything worked on mine including the heaters

thats the reason why you don't see loads that have been converted

anyhow here was mine it ran a TAPE ECU, 4 branch and de-cat

Yes please! The mire input from you guys the better! Hoping to use the ka gearbox with the puma clutch. My thinking then is that i can use the original shafts and gearbox mounts but please someone correct me if i'm wrong as its all just theory at the moment and you guys have done it.
I do appreciate i'll need to make a one custom mount for the puma engine.
Wiring shouldnt be a problem. Think ive got my head round the engine wiring and everything else can just stay standard.

I got the car from my dad, but it no longer rallies, but if I do a course opener, I want it to perform. And not in a club really. My dad and his navigator were with Highpeak 061 but it merged. Then he retired.

And fabrication wont be a problem. As I'm becoming a fabricator and welder

I think so ben! The zetec se / zetec e seems to have people divided though. I can see the positives for using either engine though. The zetec e and the duratec engines are very tuneable and good starting points for big power builds. The zetec se lumps are a good lightweight engine and can still be good for up to 200 bhp if you wanna spend the money. Great thing is, places are rebuilding the bottom ends and supplying con rods and pistons for them so they're no longer a throw away engine. Great news considering a lot of the lumps are around the 100k mile mark now.

I mean 'winnings' as in the car in question for the grand sum of Ł113.

my advice is don't use a KA gearbox the ratio's are all wrong, you can however put the puma internals in the ka casing so it fits in the same position, otherwise its a custom mount like my pictures above

you might be able to get away with using the original ka driveshafts as these aren't the equal length type that are normally found on the Puma, which is where you have to cut 1 shaft down to be slightly shorter

use standard puma clutch and cover plate

wiring can be awkward but its doable i just left the original ka loom in place and then wired in the puma engine loom, with working Pats and dash lights
