Non-Car: respirator air supply modification.

Non-Car: respirator air supply modification.
"you what?" is probably what most of you think.
Well this is a modification to an S10 respirator to allow the fitting of an air supply instead of using a filter cannister.
Back in my early career we tested a set up designed for MoD, tactical units, prison riot teams, rescue teams etc.
The idea was an add on to the existing S10 series of gas masks to cure a vulnerability. in the above scenarios you are just as likely to encounter CS gas as you are smoke from a fire.
Smoke causes big issues with gas masks. basically it clogs the filters up and you can breathe for a couple of minutes at most before the cannister becomes unusable.
Self contained breathing apparatus sets at the time, although available with small bottles for the limited duration needed in such scenarios, always had the problem of having a seperate facemask, thus needing someone to take off thier helmet, hood and gas mask before donning the BA mask and putting lid back on.
Not ideal in fast paced environments.
So a solution was needed and designed. In effect just a adaptor to go from gas mask screw thread to Sabre BA demand valve bayonet plug.
It looked like this (sorry for small picture):
And it cost in research and development a massive amount of money for what in practical terms is just a injection moulded thread adaptor and a harness for the bottle in black instead of the usual high viz colours.
A typical MoD procurement rip off.
fast forward to now.
Ive always wanted a similar set up for my home protection/revenge/riot/gone postal/end of the world kit as it means i have one facemask that can do 2 things.
Obviously im not paying silly money for such a set up.
In my stock of equipment i already have a spare Breathing apparatus set up, and a spare gas mask and cannister.
cue a few minutes of sizing things up and sideways thinking.
The diameter of the flanges is IDENTICAL. so a drill and a file later and i have a cleaned up gas cannister screw thread ready to mate to a bayonet connector.
Rubber seal, connecting tube, a few screws and some epoxy later and we have:
total cost to me - NOTHING!
and the end result with two different usage combinations.
The first configuaration is the one used by the forces as it means you are ready to go and just need to turn on the bottle to breathe air.
I prefer the second configuaration as it gives maximum air endurance. A positive pressure BA set demand valve works by pressurising the face mask. With a cannister connected, air will leak out by backflowing through the cannister. Thats fine, as the bottle is designed for that wasteful usage still giving 10 minutes air. however on demand activated positive pressure you get 17 minutes.
So a little irregular for a car forum but an example of the other little projects im upto!

cheers matt.
would like it shallower but the bayonet fitting on the demand valve is quite deep so i cant thin it anymore.
Prefer the S10 to the new heap of shit. had that through the reserves and didnt like it especially when it comes to using it with a weapon. Still would have been nice to have in my collection had to give it back as im 100% a "civvy cunt" now

Warren, I was isued with my respirator in the early 80's and left with it . I got a knock on the door from the grippers asking for my respirator back. They didnt belive I had managed 22 years with the old style respirator. You can see I took all the NBCD very seriously. Goog going though and you were wasted in the RN

Stage 2 has commenced
Now the adaptor has been made, i need something fancy to house the gear.
The original BA set comes in a hi-vis bag as such:
Which contains this bottle:
Obviously high vis orange is a bit unfashionable in tactical circles so im going to make a bottle bag in black. Will be better than the original bag because it will have more than just a shoulder strap. The original set up had a strap and also leg fittings so it could be strapped onto your thigh and hooked to your PLCE (or similar) belt.
Im going to have leg straps as per original, and add various clips and straps so it can be mounted on any modern load carrying equipment, be it a webbing set up, body armour/assault vest or even strap it to your bergen instead of a side pocket. Will also have padding for the bottle and straps so that a gas mask pouch can be fitted to it as one combined unit.
So lots of sewing ahead!!

Finished the basic bottle cover. Built it with a drawstring top and used heavy duty waterproof material. Also added 3mm of foam to help protect the bottle and reduce noise if its knocked about a bit.
And here is the finished bag:
Need to work on a harness for it next so it can be carried easily.

Whats the plans for it Warren? I remember getting my S10 which was literally a breath of fresh air after the S6. Have the MoD not moved on from the 10 yet????

The MoD has just introduced a new respirator called the GSR (general service respirator - i wonder how many hundreds of thousands some goon was paid to dream up that name ).
Its slightly better from an NBC point of view as it will last 24 hours straight in a highly toxic environment (why would you want it to? ) but you realistically have to take off one of the cannisters to aim properly which reduces its efficiency greatly so its a bit of a fail in terms of a combat respirator
my favourite mess games were mess rugby and "shell cases"
Mess rugby because its just an excuse to kick fuck our of people
Shellcases because i have a short neck so its easy to balance between the 2 stools while i pass the shell case around me.

From a combat side... The S10 Pisses all over it... The GsR gets in the way of tactical side... Frustrating... But in a real compromise you make do with what you've got.

For the civilians in uniform, most the navy and the non-frontline army units then it is great. But not so great in armed combat.
Good "civil defence" respirator although the civvy police and emergency services wont be getting it until old stocks of S10 are past thier shelf lives.

not being funny lads, but lets be fair here. if we were to fight in a CBRN environment we'd be fucked anyway. doesn't matter if you can properly line up on your sights or not. chances are you've got a big dose of nerve of blood etc and you'd be convulsing on the floor snapping your own back. for me the GSR is just so much better for being in the CS chamber. bugger fighting in cat four romeo full stop

If i had a proper workshop with CNC equipment i would make weapons. just get the plans for an ar-15 and get machining. All the data is freely available in the US and all the parts that cant be easily made or are plastics arent restricted products so can be bought freely
