Project UNDERDOG St170 Track Car

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
What?
You paid to go on a rolling road to find out your actual bhp!! (WHP as that's all rolling roads are good for! )
And all you got in return was an estimated Flywheel BHP!?!?! With no Transmission Loss on there and no Correction Add Bhp on there!!!
Honestly mate I wouldn't have paid them a penny!!! The biggest joke is it doesn't even tell you that's an estimate!! so people are gonna think that's the actual power when its not!!
Really all you have had done is the Air to Fuel Ratio checked!!

made some little changes. 1st is to cage. finally tied it into B pillars.
cut some 3mm plates
it was very tricky welding the back. my head was outside car and reaching around backhanded. not easy but it worked
paint touched up
second thing is the end plates of the rear wing. they are too small and not enough underhang so they had to be changed.
a larger endplate with more underhang super increases the wings performance. it increases downforce without increasing drag. (the wing may be just reducing lift rather than creating downforce but just saying)
its the same principle as when you see an aeroplane wing like a 747 400 with a endplates that are vertical.
so i made up this simple design.
few more jobs to do and il be ready for castle combe on 25th.
thanks for looking

Thanks Glenn. I'm still learning with my welding but I really enjoy it now.If it wasn't for YouTube i would Not know which end of the torch to hold.

Thought id do some aero testing of wing angles tonight. i took videos of string tests at various angles see see how steep i can go before flow seperation. il not post the vids because they will bore you but il show some screen shots so you get the idea of what i did.
so this is a standstill pic of the strings
so rather than pics of all the angles i tried, il just show you the lowest and highest.
so this was lowest at 7 degrees.
if you dont understand how this works just look at the strings and see how they are connected right up to the tip of the wing.
this is good and shows no flow seperation.
now this is full at 19 degrees.
notice how the string doesnt stay attached. this is bad and called flow seperation. its just drag and little to no downforce.
so i found an optimum angle of around 12 degrees before flow seperates. so i have a range of around 7 to 12 degrees to play with on track next wk.
thanks for looking and hope your not bored.

thanks rog. i think we have the same wings and its pretty steep angle at full. iv put markers on it so i know where 12 degrees is at now. to measure angle i took a reading at the door sill which happened to be 2 degrees and deducted that from the wing total.

another great thread to read, all credit to you sir for doing this, all out side, and in the snow, that's dedication.

Nice bit of info. Does the car feel any more "planted" with the wing on?

On the road I can't tell as I don't like going to wild so first test is castle Combe next sat. The balance was fine until I did the front splitter then the back got very light so hoping to restore some balance

rear brakes were in worse shape than id realised. removed them and pad material fell of the backing on one pad and disc not that healthy.
so i picked up some stock discs and godspeed kevlar pads. painted it up a little and jobs a good un.
so that was last night and im thinking all my jobs are finished for track day saturday.just had one last check of engine bay and noticed my last gearbox breather fix had come off.
bain of my life this breather. if you havent read the pages before iv struggled to stop it leaking on cornering.
so this is where the breather hole is. iv pointed a screwdriver at it in pic
its such a stubby outlet that nothings be able to hold on to it long term.
so looking around my shed i find these bits.
the brass fitting was a perfect fit in the breather hole and some pipe i had fitted the other side.
so a little chemical metal and left over night and its stuch in there
finished breather pipe extension.
hope this is the last time i do a fix on this. next time im blocking the hole and take my chances.
anyway track day at castle combe in morning so its all packed up and ready to go.
vids to follow in next few days i hope.

Saw you out on track today, looked like you were going well out there. My car is currently being run in so wasn't able to go out on track. Haven't watched the track action from the sidelines for a while and a lot of "track manners" seem to have gone out the window. How did you find it out there?

no i must have missed that on track. i did only watch about half hour of track all day though.
it was a cheap way of getting on track today. welshford had entry, stand pass, and a session for 26.50. its 15 just to get in so couldnt say no to that. another 3 sessions cost me 75 so its hard to beat that value.
The car went great. brakes are immense but was occaisionaly getting a clunk under hard braking and couldnt find the cause. new surface is very good. smooth and grippy.
The big tester for me was the the rear wing. i made a tweak to it so it would sit lower than 7degrees so set it at 5 for a starter.
it stayed on 5 all day as it was fine. rear was very stable and had no dramas with the rear getting lose like silverstone. only thing is im not sure if the cars faster with it on. its safer but maybe not faster. i need more track time to work out what to do with it.

Yeh through Avon rise and camp corner I definitely felt faster it on the main straight I was 6 mph down on last time. First vid uploaded. Nice battle with golf but that was mostly behind camera and my brother again. Golf was 220 and civic 208 bhp so my 164 didn't do too bad. Wish I had 200 though

thanks much appreciated
the bmws were fast. within reason i dont mind some corner overtaking. i enjoyed the white m3 trying to come up the inside of tower. i wasnt letting that go without a fight lol. i love all that though as long as its done by drivers who know what their doing.
iv been deep in thought about the car today and my conclusion is i need the rear wing if i run the splitter but i have to lower the effect of the wing.
next time i will experiment with the stock endplates and also lower the angle to 3 degrees. iv been thinking about the roof angle of the car and it dips down a bit to the rear so the airflow is hitting the wing at a slightly greater angle that it would appear. it may be adding the effect of another couple of degrees of angle to the wing. i will be checking the angles of the roof when i get time but if you look at the car side on its very noticable.
i need a full track day to experiment.
any news on a trig day rog.

I've been chatting with a few people about rear wings. They've all said they need to be a roof height not higher. So as the air comes over it continues at the same plane not disturbed. Maybe that might help?

Get car finished quick man. I love the tinkering. I will continue lol. Iv not looked at yours in a while but from what I remember it's further forward than mine so does the roof stop you dropping the wing right down.?? Mine just overhangs a bit.

The difference in the vid with the wing above and last year at trax is huge. I don't think I corrected oversteer once yesterday. At trax without it I was correcting almost every corner

Where is the rear wing from?
