Default mk1 onion freshen up...

ok so my daily was a mk1 onion 1.6 ghia auto, boring as hell but kept me from tinkering..... then i zetec'd it lol and started tarting it up, but sadly it was in need of a fair old it of welding n TLC no doubt follwed by paint etc.... so i skipt the middle man n bought another one, a more solid mk1 onion to get painted n build up

blue one to be replaced by the black one!!

stripped her down n sent her off for paint wile i pulled the blue one apart!

work commenced, all rot was removed, skillfully plated and skimmed with filler... not jus blobbed over!

side repeaters removed

de locked

also the holes from chrome trim plug welded over!!

rear screen both sides had rot unfortunatly but was cut out n rid of!!

front needed a bit choppin to

arches wer solid unlike uva onion!

smoothed washer jets

de locked boot to

first lick of paint went on, Audi Phantom Shwartze black, slight silver metalic to it.

nice mint bonnet

little addition to the bonnet! marmite i no... but i like marmite!!

got the car back now n just sorting the suspension n brakes n everything underneath at the min, plus interior... gonna drop the lump in soon as i get a spare pair of hands to.
and sent wheels off for refurb the other week so expecting them back soon! (not stayin on the s1 wheels)

jus gonna upload some other pics, been doin sum odds n sods over last week or so.

got a tidy dash but has a couple cracks, thought id have a go at repairing it myself, wont be mint no doubt but will be slightly better with any luck!

shame bout these big cracks as the dash is propa straight...

dremmel'd out valleys into the cracks

drilled little holes at end of each crack as told it helps against it carrying on down its path

decided to dye the old lookin grey boot carpet

decided to do the inside carpet to!

series one box, bit of elbow grease n sum paint in order i think!

looks better!!

s1 ARB, was already all painted black before so i just gave it a once over to save time.

decent rack with new ends, cleaned up n painted gbox mounts and vibre-technics mounts, s1 ARB and s1 box

engine of choice, 2.0 zetec on 45's with dunnel management! got a lightened flywheel, a 4 branch manifold and iv got cams to go in with verniers from my old engine!

popped the gearbox on the lump

wopped the rear disc conversion n poly bushed rear end on

old tatt can collect more dust in the back of the garage!!

finally sits a bit nicer, got the front suspension on aswel as new rack.

carpet looks alot better black imo

rear shelf from a mk2 onion was already black so pinched that off a mate, stuck sum new vibe slick 6x9's in wile i was there!

along with the new vibe slicks up front, ran all amp wiring etc already for the 15"vibe sub. might pull out the trim tho n paint em all satin black... not important yet so il leave it for now

cossie leathers in except lower rear bench as needs tinkering with to fit.

got sum new carello's,

my mate gave me my indicators back after he broke n scrapped my mk3 se cab i sold him! ther goodens cos i bought em new maybe a year back but not spanking new (new Ł30 +pp so put me off, im quite tight i no)

after applying the tint

and indicators to!

put a few cables n hoses in ready for the lump to go in.

stuck the lump in on my own as no one has been about to lend a hand, got fed up with waiting. jubious at first as didnt wana smash up the engine bay but managed it ok!!

thats the lump in and trial fitted bumper n 16i splitter but gonna give em a lick of bumper black paint as bumpers grey n splitters black so both need to be same colour really.

its to dark in the pic to see the lights but they look ok, especially with the smooth grill i knocked up for my old onion.

got a decent rad n nice lookin fan all mated together!!

strut brace is goin on, needs a polish but im no bufty... once cars all together n on road it will all get a polish etc but i prefer the driving every day to the cleaning every day.

custom bracket made up by sum clever chap, holds facet pump n filter king.

got the rear cossie seats in as had the cloth in before so new wot i was doing, except had the cloth wrapped round onion lower bench but with the leather that wasnt goin to be as simple so got a leather escort lower bench that my friend had wich was an absolute touch... but the side bolsters being leather needed a little brute force n ignorance, well happy now!! interior jus needs dash finishing with the repair and then alarm fitting. couple door cards to.

fronts looking the part now!!! light is poor over garages so excuse the rubbish pics!

rear ends just waiting on the number plate srround, paid for it 3 weeks ago n annoyingly playing the dam waiting game!!!! light is in tho!! door handle needs putting on drivers door only cos the windows down n in the way, il get power to the ignition in nx couple days n pop that on (then can do mirrors and doorcards)

apart from wheels this is almost how car will look as finished article, couple other minor things to do. cant wait.

had to unrap the dunnell management so can suss everything on it, got the user manual and loom build pin layout off paul dunnell who is really helpful!!! just gave him my serial number and he sent me the needed info and answered my questions to!!!

after labelling it all up i taped it up and left the few labells on that i wanted/needed. iv since fitted it, all except the ignition parts as again need power to the car to check ignition wire on back of barrel.

as boribg as it is lol i dug out a fresh starter i kept after breaking a mk3 cab!! if its not new then its good 2nd hand, maybe with a lick of paint to... but in the engine bay its all looking quite fresh as a result. (will get decent bay pics ater i fit strut brace)

also got my wheels back... they have a nice gold shine to them in the light but admittingly look a little bronze/brown without light.... but its hard finding a nice gold gold and not use the usual yellow golds or subaru golds!

only problem im faced with is the bolts are longer than the old ones so need to cut them right down, and as iv now got cossie 4x4 calipers up front i got a feeling il be needing slight 3-5 mm spacers on front. once sorted il put them on and get sum decent pics.

rear bumpers missing the chrome strip il be sticking that on in nx few days to ;0)
fit the heated front screen now also so gotta dig out the heated screen loom n solder that in to.
and got to get the relivant form sent off to dvla to put my old blue onion plate to put onto this as it has my initials on so although not quite a private plate iv become atatched to it, the black onion plate has SLK on it to so might be able to move that on n inturn covers the retention fees etc!!

Get that spoiler from the blue one on the car, also a stud conversion for the hubs would be a good mod.. Costs less than Ł40 too. Like the bonnet aswell.

As for the SLK plate im sure a merc owner would like that?

dunno bout the saff spoiler as everyone does it, the one on blue one was fibreglass rep to so wasnt all that. i do hav a couple genuine ones now but wana giv it sum time with no spoiler so can be a little different n if it grows on me then so be it, if not il get the saff one painted n pt on. where can i get the stud conversion from? i was thinkin that about the plate too ;0)

cheers mate, they are 15" mh600 2 piece split compomotives that are commonly known as datapost rims although they used 16's (on s1 turbo and 16i racecars in the 80's.

Screw them studs in by hand and tighten them up using a stud extractor by putting it in reverse. I bought the 60mm length stud.
