chop top mk2
not been on for awhile , got an offer i could not refuse on my project mk6 escort so it had to go .
so i thought i would resurrect a project that i have had for 17 years. it has been built once already and run for about a year and then put aside while i collected the parts to build it as i wanted.
the car in question is a mk2 cortina
the shell has had a 3" roof chop and the screen has been laid back 4"and all the floors have been removed to make way for a custom made chassie, this was done about 8 years ago, at the same time i allso got the wheels which are 22" at the rear and 20" at the front. this is how the project sat untill a few weeks ago.
now its time to get the project rolling, there is a lot to do and the first thing to tackle is the chassie . this is going to be lazor cut at work from 4" x 2" box section but first i have to design it so i will post more as i go.

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
The proportions look spot on, some chops can look a tad squashed but that looks awesome with the layed back screen, can't wait to see how it comes along

heres the power plant for the beast,
it,s a 3.5 rover with a holly carb.this carb came off a twin turbo rover but i will be running a single t4 turbo
had these plates lazor cut for the manifolds which i will make for the turbo.

thought about a 350 small block but the rover is just so light and there is another reason i want this car to go round corners . all will become clear, this build will be a little different.
it wont be just a rover lump stuck in a mk2.

have a few tricks up my sleeve. just because it has big rims does not mean it wont handle i dont understand this assumption that it has to have 16" rims, surely its all in the chassis set up. a good thought out chassis is what makes the difference.i am hoping this is what will make this build different.

got the escort rolling with very minor body work to do and really just brakes to connect up.guy who had it seemed keen but who knows if it will ever get done, i hope so cos it looked dam cool.
love the mk2 , i just want a modern equivilant .a car that rides well , goes well and looks the boll**.
back to the build, front suspension is a jag independent unit which in stead of having a normal spring and shock will be converted to run a coilover. also i am hoping to have an air ride set up which is only used to lower the car to the floor when parked but i want it to drive on the coilsovers. i know this will take a bit of doing but i think i have designed a system that might work.
another trick bit on this car will be the bellhouseing , this will be a range rover item which is cut in half length wise and mounted to a rover Lt77 5 speed box with a land rover gearstick. this little lot shorterns the whole gearbox assembly about 5" to 6" this means the engine can sit that much further back to the bulkhead.the idea is to have the engine completly behind the front axle line.this is a proven mod as a mate of mine used to race land rovers with the same mods and he had a lot of success.it is through him that all the bits are being made . will get some pics on as i get bits done.

first thing i have to do on this build is design a chassis so over the week end have had a measure up and have laid down the basic frame ideas.to do the front of the chassis i have to fit the wheels to the jag front hubs, to do this i need to change the pcd on the hubs from 5x120 to 5x112 so i have stripped the hubs of the front suspension so i can get them machined at work.once this is done and are back on and bolted to the wheels i will be able to finalise the front chassis locations and front suspension pickup points.
the chassis is going to be lazor cut at work so i need to draw up a proper set of technical drawings for my mate to work of and then he can draw it up on cad ready for cutting.so i have to get it right.try to get some pics on of my ideas as i go.

my mate who does the gearbox conversion has just done one for his so
this conversion with using a landrover gear stick with the four wheel drive selector cut off saves about 8" in length.this means i can place my engine and box well back in the frame behind the front axle which in turn will make the car handle that much better.just waiting for the redrilled hubs then i can start to design the front of the chassis.

progress is going to be a bit slow at first untill i can get the chassis sorted.front hubs are now redrilled so i can put the studs back in and bolt the susspension to the wheel so i can work out where the chassis rails and front crossmember will be.
that last pic looks cool as f**k, will keep the pics coming ,

got the front suspension set up and measured up , things are going to be very tight. the chassis rails are going to be about 300mm apart.its only because im going to have some serious engine setback that it will work.will start drawing everything up and hopefully can get some bits lazor cut.will get some pics on over the weekend.
