This is a 2nd project i've just started as my Mk2 Fiesta track is in need of a lot of money spending on it's 6 speed ST170 gear box conversion and at the moment i need the money for other things.

I have been putting this off for a while now, but i've had the doner Sierra for about 17 months now and the Escort has been stored in my mates then my garage since about January 07.
The Escort was one of the last 80 spec and first 90 spec cars, It actually left the factory with full 90 spec interior but 80 spec front bumper and boot spoiler. I'm undesided as wether or not to go for full 90 spec exterior aswell

I have 95% of all the parts required for this build and the only major parst i need are a rad and possibly turbo.
So seen as i've had this and last weekend off (3rd and 4th for 6 months :-( ) i thought i'd make a start, Last week was the Sierras turn



















The Sierra shell is mint so i'm off to a good start

This week was the Escorts turn, The 1st few pics are from when i took the car off the road, It was striped of all it's running gear about 3 years ago and fitted to a Cabby XR3i which i sold after 7 months

The Escort shell as a whole is good, it's just from the rear door piller to the rear lower quarter that needs some attention, I've seen a hell of a lot worse so not an issue Plus i wanted a genuine RS logbook
I actually cut up a Cabby that the body work was battered to death on, but the whole underside was 99% mint, i kept all the bits i new i needed so hopefully, panel wise, i should be ok.

The out side I'll be going for a totaly original look apart from the wheels, but i will be running Ford 15"'s, Either 3dr Cosworth or the 4x4 Saff wheels, just need to find out the offset difference's and find out if they'll fit over standard 2WD hub's/brakes.

I'll be updating this quite offen so keep looking

Spent a few hours working on the car this week after work, and had the weekend off so i got a bit done.
After getting the Escort onto the spit to make it easier to have a good look underneath, i decided that the both rear half of the sills needed work so ordered a pair of inner and outter sills as i dont want to just patch it up. There not to bad but i'm building this fussy so a replacement is the order of the day.
The bottom rear corners need work, but i have these off 2 quarters i cut off a Cabby a while back. Anyway, pics are better

Started on the rear floor area, 1st off a bit of bracing was required





Wheel well removed




Rear cross member spotwelds drilled out and member removed



Also managed to cut up the Sierra Moments before final death.












Front and rear struts braced.




Then was time to make it a convertable.

I'm going to do the rear floor area 1st as i need to repair the sill area at the same time, so will crack on tomorrow after work and cut the rear end of the Sierra down to size.

Been busy again

After looking at a lot of pictures of how other people have done there conversion i decided to go with the full front floor arear (front of rear seats to the front cross member), but with the rear i'm going to retain the the rear bench area and inner arches from the Escort.
So I started to trim the floor down by removing the parts that are not required like the full sills, rear inner and outter arches. Then it was cut in half at the front of the rear seats. It's amazing how much actually gets cut off

Also removed the bulkhead top panel








Got a day off tomorrow so hope to get the rear section around the strut mounts finshed, and start to measure up the Escort rear floor ready for trimming

Thanks for the positive replies, they keep me nice and motivated It seems to be flying along, had a good 8 hours on it today so will get updated pics up tomorrow hopefully



The rear floor aera is the part i've been working on today, I'm not using the whole rear section, It will be a lot like Cyril Sneers Mk3 and retain the as i want to retain the rear bench support (the lump the bench sits on) so the seat will just bolt back in as standard.

I've taken loads of pics of the step by step process of rear as this is the only part i had problems finding pics of as there are 4 or 5 different ways it can be done depending on what sort of set up your going for, and what the car will be used for, i.e just track, just road, with or without rear interior, internal or external fuel tank etc.

I want it so when people look throught the window they'll think it's just a FWD RS Turbo, So it will have a full interior and road use only ( for now :-D )

The engine came out of my brothers old car that we i broke a few years back, it was a full stage 3 set up running 340bhp @ 21psi, it was rebuilt with low comp pistons (7.8-1) about 2 years before it was broken, Only thing i need to buy is a rad so all good. 340bhp will be more than enough to start with, plus i'll want to use it all the time so stupid power will defo be out of the question.

havent seen the other lads car. lots of different projects on here. are you going to have an internal fuel tank so to speak like would the escort one still fit or could be made fit. i have to get an external for mine as i used the whole floor pan which is a tad awkward but like u said yours will be pure sleeper when looking through the window! and with 350 horses it will be serious weponry. fare play cant wait for next update!

Bit of an update , Been working the last 12 days so just grabing a hour here and there so making good progress

Rear Sierra floor section all finshed off after a lot of umming and arring as to which bits are needed and whats not, so started to rim it down.












Started to remove the floor skin

Finshed item (talk about hard fucking work :-(, poxy spot welds)


Small bit of corrosion that needs to be sort out on the inner side of the chassis leg, only rust on the whole car

Got this weekend off, so after the F1 tomorrow and Sunday morning i'll spending so time on the rear escort section figureing out where it's going. 1st job is TRY to turn the shell up side down, not looking forward to that at all :-(

Sorry for the lack of updates, have been doing a bit, but what with working 6 days a week and having to sort some house DIY stuff out it's been a bit slow, i'm off this week so plan a few days on it, i'll try and get an update up this week some time.

This is way over due, But i'll do it in a few sections as uploading pics on photobucket seem to take AGES................

Any way, After removing the Sierra floor off the chassis rails and cross section, and removing the BADLY corroded Escort chassis rails, i moved on to offering up the the Sierra axle, with the rials and cross section attached to see if it were possible to get them close enought to the floor to use/retain them. ANSWER...........NO, but almost.
With the rails and cross section fitted and offered right up to the Escort floor the I couldn't get the drive shaft angles needed nor get the diff out put in the right place/angle. I could have just made a diff mount so the diff sat higher, but this ment that the front axle mounts were to low, as did the turrets, this ment there was almost NO shock movement as they were 3/4 compressed :-(

how far the the rails sit off the Escort floor




Then i removed the sierra section to see were it need to go, look at the difference in shaft angles, this is with the wheels at a nice right hight, about 25-30mm lower than standard right hight

this is where diff needs to sit (IMO) for the correct shaft angles and camber.


So this is the hole i ended up with in the rear seat floor section for the axle hoop not to foul the floor ( this will be sorted at a later date)



I'm further along but need to upload and sort out pics which i'm gonna start in a mo.
