I've done about 10 sets of different lights now, it's all very well heating them up, but then they are far too hot to handle. Your best bet is to use a heat gun to warm the glue section at a time, nice and hot, just before the plastic starts to melt. then run a blade or a small flat blade screwdriver through the glue. You should then slowly be able to pull them apart.

Does make a huge difference, here's my current car, before and after.

just give them a rub down with some wet and dry paper to remove the shine and give them a good key, wash with hot soapy water, few coats of primer, rub back with fine wet and dry again, then a few coats of matt black.

Yes matt black, looks spot on when behind the clear lens. Anything glossy looks a bit too much if you get what I mean!

Use a heat gun and a blade to cut the lenses out, then scuff the chrome with flatting paper and a few coats of matt black.
Mines looks like this.
