Default 3 Door Escort Project

Hi all,
I'm starting a build using my newly acquired car (Pics to follow when I can).
It currently stands with a pansy little 1.3 engine but will be getting a bigger one.
I'm considering building a ZVH and am wondering if anyone has any advice about the best way to do it on a bit of a budget? And what sort of power I could expect? Whether its n/a or turbo'd.

All comments and help are always welcome.
Cheers.

Default Pics

Ok, ok, here's some of the pics I have upto date.

This is how it was when I got it, With the bumper in grey.

This is how it sits now that it's been 'lowered' and has the RS kit fitted.

De-wipered, washered and locked boot Not finished yet though.

I'm in the process of getting rid if the swage lines in the bumper.

And now with the bumper in white (Primer) but not finished yet.

As you can see, I've got a bit of work to do including a nicer engine, LoL.

Hope you all like, All comments, questions, suggestions, etc welcome.

I'm hoping you don't mean the bumper, Coz I really wouldn't want to weld plastic! LoL.

As for the boot, Yes it's been done properly and had plates welded to it first.

Thought I'd add some more pics.
My steering wheel of choice.

And my mascot, Aww Soo cute! LoL.

Latest pic of how she looks.

White bumper looks soo much better but not sure what to do about the hole between bumper and bonnet. Any suggestions as to what would look good?

Also this is what I made her do yesterday!

Surprisingly the puny 1.3 engine didn't struggle or give any problems!! LoL

Hi all, Haven't really had chance to do much to my car but here's a little update.

Finally got round to fitting the electric boot pop.

Removed the kit from the passenger side to see how bad the sill is and found it to be like a teabag!! LoL. Sorry but didn't get a pic of it, was too distraught. LoL.
So got a new sill to do when I can be bothered.

And a new front panel as well due to damage at some time in its life.

Also have my new/temporary engine, gearbox, exhaust and a few other bits, thankfully donated by my last car!! LoL.

Hope you like, at least the sound of, what I've done up to date.

Does anyone know if mk4 escort and mk3 fiesta drive shafts are the same length?
Cheers for any info you can give.

Will update when I've done more.

the easiest conversion for you is since you allready have a zetec is drop that in. your coil pack setup(edis4) off the 1.3 engine will plug up to that engine fine. and run the ignition system. then just get twin carbs on it either webbers or bike carbs

Mines more than likely going to be 2.0 zetec too as that's the engine I have.
The front bumper doesn't look too bad when it's moving, Just not soo good when you look at it closely. LoL.
I didn't realise it was rare coz of having green tinted windows and a decent sunroof!! Nice bit of info there.
The number plates also have Sandcliffe on them, Also Ilkeston. Don't know if that's near you or not.

749Steve = I have the entire wiring loom to power the zetec with the original injection system, Just have to separate the bits I need from the rest of it. LoL.

Thanks for your comments so far guys but I still need to know about the driveshaft sizes, If anyone knows.

Cheers.

Hi folks, got a little update for you.

Well after the shock of all the rust in the passenger sill, I decided I really should get something done about it so today, I remover the kit again and started cutting away at the old sill.
This is the rear section of the sill

And the rest after being cut along the top

This is what was left of the rear section after being cut off. LoL.

And the extent of the rot underneath it!!!

After a while and a bit of work, This is what the rear section looked like with some new metal in there and lots more strength. LoL.

And a while after that, The new sill was on strong and looking much better.

I dread to think how bad the drivers side could be!!
Many thanks to Dec for doing the welding and enduring the welding burns.

Now I spose I really should start thinking about what colour I want it when finished too. Any idea's welcome.

Hope you like so far guys. All comments welcome.

Hi guys, Not updated for a while so thought I should, But its not a big update anyway coz I haven't done much! LoL.

I've changed the wheels at the moment due to my tyres verging on being illegal!!

At some time soon hopefully, With the help of Dec, My drivers side sill will be replaced with a nice new one.

I've also been toying with the idea of turboing a 1.3 engine but not sure what needs doing so anyone with any ideas would be helpful!!
I know not many people bother turboing these engines coz their weedy and don't give much power but I'm not really bothered about having power as long as it goes. LoL.

Sorry for lack of pics but I will add some when I get some or can upload them.

Any suggestions or knows anyone who could give me some info about the turboing, please let me know as I would be much appreciated.

Cheers all for now.

I want to do it coz then it's still a 1.3 but with some sort of go to it and It'll confuse everyone else that'll be expecting it to have a bigger engine in.
I've seen a few turboed 1.3 Ka's so it can/has been done and have been producing around 130 BHP (Same as a standard 2 litre zetec but from only a 1.3, He he he)

I also have a 1.6 EFi head with inlet and a few other bits sitting in my kitchen so I've got more options like getting hold of an rst or zetec bottom end and making either a cvh or zvh turbo engine.

I just felt like doing something that not everyone else does!!

Too many options, HELP!!!

Hi all, Haven't updated this for ages so thought it was about time to!!

Right, since the last post, I've also replaced the drivers side sill as it was corroded (Like the passenger side)!!

Sill being cut off, To reveal ->

Rear of sill ->

After re-building the inner sill, like the other side, The new outer sill was welded on.

A few months ago the car went in for it's mot and failed, As I thought it would!!, but not on much.
N/S/F chassis leg holed and corroded,
N/S/F anti-roll bar mount area holed,
N/S/F tyre fouling when on full right lock,
N/S side repeater not working,
O/S/F chassis leg holed and corroded,
Both front springs incomplete,
Both front tires worn on inner edge.

All repaired but only have pics of front chassis leg welding ->
Drivers side ->

And Passenger side ->

Sorry for the poor state of the welding but I did it myself and this was only my 3rd time of actually welding!!!

Up until last week my drivers side front bearing had been making some pretty horrid noises that got louder and worse so finally decided to actually replace it.
While I was replacing it I also did the passenger side.
I replaced the entire hub, drive shafts and brakes on both sides but they were replaced with uprated items ready for the bigger engine to go in.

New drive shafts, hubs and one disc ->

And the other disc and callipers ->

Here's all the bits taken off ->

Including the remains of the drivers front wheel bearing!! ->

Hub part and the bearing itself, Well what's left of it!! LoL ->

That's all that's been done upto date except that I'm currently running on the XR2i wheels I had laying around ->

Don't know whether to keep it on them or these ->

Or back onto the RS rims?? Or even these again?? ->

Tooooo much choice!! LoL.

Anyone's opinion would be gratefully received.

Hope you enjoy reading this thread and look forward to your comments.

Time for a little update I guess.

Not really done much to the 'Scort for ages now due to lack of time, funds and enthusiasm!!

but after driving around for the past week or so with a hole in the centre exhaust box, Thought it was time to sort out as I was getting a little fed up of it drinking the fuel like it's going out of fashion!! LoL.

Sorted that this morning and now it's nice and quiet again but with a nice raspy sound from the back box.

Also had an investigation into why my boot popper had stopped working only to find....... It's buggered!!!
So more to have to sort out, Yay!!

That's it for now.
Hopefully get to do more and add more updates soon.

Hi again all, another little update for you all.

Well the time has come for the engine upgrade, not through my own choice though!!
So I've had to get, 2day, the 8mm fuel return pipe and a bit of flexi fuel pipe too.
All that's left to do now is get the exhaust, separate the wires I do need for the ones I don't and actually do the swap!!

Gunna clean up and paint the replacement fuel tank in the next few days and a few other bit's that need doing and hopefully will try and update you all again, maybe even with some pics!! LoL

Till next time......

Hello all, Well been ages since my last update so here goes.

To be totally honest not an awful lots changed really, In my last post I said that it was time to change my engine well, I still haven't (LoL), the engine has now got so bad that it really doesn't like running properly to the point that sometimes it's only running on 3 cylinders!!
The (Oil-less) gearbox also decided to quite literally internally destroy itself, Although with no oil I was just waiting for that!!

To replace the engine I did have a 2 litre Zetec with almost everything to do the conversion but when examined it was found that the cylinder bores were contaminated from where the piston rings had been sat for so long.
So off for another engine I went.

After looking for a while, I found another 1.3 out of a Mk5 escort with only around 47000 miles on the clock so out it and the gearbox came. Got it home and started stripping it back for a recon and clean up.

This is after a slight clean up. The gearbox has already been fitted and working nicely, With oil in!! LoL.
The only one problem I found with this engine was that it did have central fuel injection and the place where the manual lift pump bolts to was blanked off so have had to uncover it to use the pump that's on my current engine.
This is how far I've got....

Just got to make sure it's totally flat and drill and tap the holes for the bolts.

When all that's done the engine will have a lick of paint before having everything bolted back on to it but before it goes in the car, the engine bay will also be cleaned and (Possibly) painted.

I've had a little problem with wheels too due to some thieving baskets, but have now got 2 different sets.....

These, A lot of people and I think suit the car more but did have a little problem with a wobble so they came back off again and these ones went on instead...

I'm a bit half/half about these though as I like them coz they're 15's but don't think they suit the car as much.

As you can see from the pics, I also now have a better, Ghia (I think), front bumper. It was in perfect condition till I let my miss's move the car and she found a tiny little wall!!!!! But oh well, I now have another one, In better condition and it's already been painted before so it'll be easier to paint it myself. He he he.

That's all I can think of for now but will update again as soon as I've done more.
As usual, All comments are welcome.

Hi all, well this is just a little update as not a lots been done, That I can remember anyway!! LoL.

My rev counter turned up this morning....

Once it's been cleaned up a bit and I work out where the signal for it is coming from, it'll be sitting in my clocks instead of the horrid analogue clock that's there at the moment.

Need to find and get hold of some M16 x 1.5 pitch x 15mm length bolts to block up a few holes in the head too but at the moment the closest I'm finding are 30mm long. If need be I'll have to get busy with a hacksaw!!

That's all I can think of for now. Will update again when I've got further.

Another update....

Started painting the replacement engine and few other bits....

Back (Above) and front (Below)....

Also the rocket cover......

Also took a pic of the holes in the head that need bunging (As stated in another tread).....

Still got a few things to paint like the sump, pulley wheels and brackets.
Also not sure what to do about the head? As you can see from the pics, at the moment its horrid and unpainted.
I was thinking about painting it silver but not sure, What does everyone else think?

Also started fitting the rev counter into my dash clocks.

More updates and pics to come as and when.

Well took the car for it's dreaded mot this morning and as I expected, It failed!!! But surprisingly not on as much as I thought it would. LoL.

It failed on -
N/S/F wheel different size,
Both trackrod ends have play in them,
Rear brakes and handbrake efficiency way below requirements.

Could have been a lot worse though as both rear bearings are whirring away nicely, N/S/F wheel bearing is gone and the front panel isn't attached very well at the bottom.

So I've got 2 new trackrod ends, the wheel and tyre's being sorted out by the garage that didn't fit it properly then all I've got to do is fit the trackrod ends and adjust the brakes/handbrake.

Oh well, on with that then. LoL.

More updates to come when able.
