Default Bike Carbs on a 1.3 HCS engine Questions and Build Log

Hi, my names loz and ive been modding my little escort 1.3 for a few months now. about 18 to be exact, i would like to think i have learnt a lot about escorts and fords and i have become quite an enthusiast.

I subscribed to a couple of ford mags and i found an article in a classic ford mag about motorbike carbs and how its a good, reliable, cheap mod for cars. So i thought it would be a good idea for me to have a go.

I have since got hold of 4 Yamaha FZR 750's linked together, ive also got hold of a new choke cable and a fuel pressure regulator. all i need now is a custom manifold for my HCS engine. now where can i get that????

but anyway what do you think? is this a good idea, i know it going to be well fun to do and it will be more economical and give better gains than my weber TLDM 28/32 thats 19 years old. hope it all works out.

From wot i've read they do tune up quite well for a 1300 but and this is a big but and the reason most people don't bother.
why not drop a 1600 cvh straight in there? 100bhp+ outta the box then.

couple of reasons.
1. dont have a 1.6l to put in there or the money to buy one.
2. dont have the tools or people to borrow the tools off (engine crane, ect..)
3. insurance would increase by about 600-1000 quid
4. i need my car every other day so would have to do a complete engine swap in one day.

i have bike carbs on my mk2 escort, had them for over 2 years, had teething issues but well impressed with the power and fuel, 120bhp @ wheels out of a 1600 xflow with 44 mpg on a run? yes please, lol. on the 1.3 i imagine it'll help with drivability and sound pretty nice but dont expect a huge difference, but on the plus side, if your 1.3 inlet manifold fits a 1.6 then you can look at them as an investment for the future. as much as i dont like them, bogg bro's will knock you up a manifold but it wont be as cheap as u think, also, once they're on the car you need them settin up and jetting properly. hope that helps

cheers helps a lot, and yeh i know my HCS engine has the same manifold as a crossflow i think. so it would be a helpful investment

and i know they wont give big gains but it will be more than what i have already.

Also got a question, is there a way to power something with between 6/12 volts depending on how much the throttle is pressed.

basically ive added a real dump valve onto my car and (you might say its pointless but i know it works on its own i just need to put it in the car (and i love the sound :P)

and ive added a small 12v air compressor into my air intake so i have compressed air going into my carb (at 5psi) (it works so ive got a v v small supercharger :P)

however i dont want it pushing in compressed air all the time so i need a way to lower or stop the voltage when the throttle is disengaged. (i was really bored today :P)

well, i've never heard of the compressor thing, and i suspect its because it'll use more power to run it than it generates, and how are you gettin the dump valve on with no turbo? it sounds a bit like MAX POWER have been whispering in your ear,

1.8 fiesta xr2i or rs1800 engine £100 ish quid , get everything made up for the zetec , use a zetec injecter plate and have 4 pipes welded on and get some silocon to conect them or use a st170 inlet ! agen both no more than £60 ish by far the best way to go

ringing power from the 1300 ohv is a thankless and pointless task, the things just wont rev or handle any sort of noticeable power increases.

1st weak point is the rocker shaft, it will just shear its bolts if u rev it hard. then if that survives, the weak as shit crank wil eat itself with any sort of power thrown its way lol

i once had the idea of tuning my 1300 ohv engine when i was 18, couple of tuners told me not to bother due to the above, so i waited a couple of years and just cvh turbo'd it, which was cheaper for more power

hey, would it be possible to convert to throttle body? instead of multiple carbs. they seam cheaper and i think i can re use the inlet manifold i have allready instead of buying a new one.

what would i need to do that.

tbh don't know where to start with either mod, as you have said i wont get much gains from 4 carbs and it will cost loads to get a manifold created. but i would get some gains from a throttle body correct?

so what to do... hummm

ideas, what would be cheaper?

carbs will be chaeaper than throttle bodys.

just get a power run with your engine and someone to set it up well, no doubt the carb will be tired and could do with a bit of work, or you could just give it a good clean with some carb cleaner . get a better airfilter on it and a good exhaust system. no point in taking this engine any further imo, easier to justchange it and start with a better base, 2l zetec or cvh turbo

carbs will cost more to do than a 2l zetec and wont give you as much power...

carbs = 10 quid :P

single weber = 50 coins

reconditioned throttle body (with no injectors) = 8 quid

humm...

for the quad carbs i will need a new manifold
that will be around 100 or so
and a new fuel pressure reg which was 10 quid.

so for quad carbs it would cost me around 120 quid (mostly depends on the manifold)

for a throttle body mod what would i need. the throttle body for about 8 quid
injectors - how much are them
what else??

i can use my original manifold if i find the right throttle body (am i right?)
