Ford Escort XR3I 1.6 Ltr MFI College project car - ideas/comments please????
At Bcot college in basingstoke. Our project is an engine rebuild of the Ford. Our proposed budget was £2296.21. A guy on our team did the research on that so credit to him for that but we havent had word back if we are going to get that or anywhere near it but we over budgeted anyway - if its gonna get knocked down aim high. There is five of us so from time to time there might be a different response.
Anyway, so far we have removed the engine and stripped and also started to clean it - i'd say we are about half way through cleaning all of it.
We reckon the car should have around 80 - 90 BHP standard but when we put it on the dyno it came out about 80.3 - At first we thought this was the piston rings because on the Ford rocker cover its not a screw cap for the oil you just pull it off and when it was on the dyno gettin the nuts revved off it this thing just kept flyin off, but we also found a vaccum line was severed which might have led to the dramatic loss in power.
The aim of the project is get the most improved BHP and providing we fix the initial problem we are off to a good start. On our budget we figure the easiest way is more air and colder, so here is what we intend to do:
Replacing the damaged air box for this air filter > http://torquecars.potn.com/Pipercros...y_p1547194.htm
New high lift camshaft
Possibly a new head
Bigger valves - if we cant get the new head we will grind out the old one and if the new one isnt ground out we will grind it out
Spark plugs and HT leads
High pressure oil pump
Possibly twin carbs
New pistons - if we bore it out
Lighten and balance the flywheel
Balance the Con rods and pistons
Port Matching
We have a brand new alternator and a brand new clutch
We need a new radiator, vaccum line and water coolant tank as well as all the gaskets, head bolts, piston rings - all the repair stuff before we mod it.
Joined this site to see if anyone had any good ideas - cheap is good.
Any suggestions. Another group did the for VW Golf and they all got the response "Nos" - this is not a performance upgrade!
If anybody knows websites or cheap places to get parts - much appreciated - We are in basingstoke so the closer the better!
