Default Mondeo GLX TD Estate - Ramshackle rally car

Hi All,

I'm a newbie on here but thought I would join up and share this with you all. I'm hoping to find some advice too but i'll post in the relevant sections for that.

So, this will be the second year that we've taken part in the Ramshackle rally which is a roadtrip from Calais to Annecy, San Remo, Monaco, Perpignan and then Valencia all in a car purchased for under £150. It was £100 last year. Last year we were team Penguins of the apocalypse and we used a 190K mile Cavalier 1.6 which did us proud (after i'f fixed it's issues and given it a cambelt change etc) and made it there and back without a hitch. We then sold it on to another charity rallyer. Here's our website from last year...

www.freewebs.co.uk/ramshacklepenguins

This year we were after something a bit bigger as with 4 of us and all of our gear we're going to need some space. We will be raising money for the Parkinsons disease society this year.

So, we have aquired this little beauty for £150 from E-bay and we picked it up on Thursday night... Looks alright in the ebay pic huh...

So off we went to Derby to get it armed with a litre of oil, some coolant, jump leads, tow rope and some brake fluid (just in case) Let's just say the ebay pic was "flattering". This is what greeted us...

loveley.

It has 165K on the clock. On the list of jobs to do so far is...

Change Cambelt
Sort out alternator as the battery light keeps coming on
Get MOT
Sort knocking suspension
Replace fluids
Check brake pads
Check all hoses/rad etc (important for where we're going)
Decorate!

That's it for now.

And on a very good day with a low res camera

I thought the grey you can see on the rear arch was primer in the e-bay pic... Alas not. Still doesn't matter as we are thinking about covering the whole thing in empty beer cans for our theme this year.

You can spend out on it but have to keep in the spirit of things. For example i'll be changing the cambelt and give it a service plus whatever it needs for the MOT whereas handing it to a garage and having a new engine stuck in would be considered bad form if you see what I mean.

Not updated for a while! Car now has 12 months MOT after a bit of welding. Thanks to the advice on here I have a new alternator ready to fit along with the obligatory timing belt, aux belts etc before the off...

So, a bit of progress this afternoon! Went and bought some Evo stick Super duper toughest waterproof adhesive in the world ever type stuff...

Quick "key" for the adhesive

Jetwashed it to get the months of birdshit off!

Stuck on the obligatory sticker

And on with the cans!

More tommorrow!

Sooo, progress today!

The "bar" under construction

We've made it so you can pull it out when parked

Then covered in fablon

It's now ready for the optics, beer mats, glasses etc!

So while we had the fablon out I got a bit carried away...

My personal favourite are the headlight eyebrows ha ha

We have a cover although we are hoping not to have to use it.

It's brill, did about 40 miles in it today, the double takes were awesome! although some of that may be down to the tuneful tappets!

Thanks for the offer. We go tommorrow so no time to get some bits beforehand but the plan is to use the car again next year if all goes well so if you still have it in a week or so I may take you up on that!

So, we're off tommorrow and the car is all done!

Thanks for all of your comments, support and help with technical issues.... Hopefully I will have plenty of pics of us on our travels to update you with when I get back next week (fingers crossed it's in this car not a rental!) There are some great projects on here so I plan to stick around and introduce some of my other projects (alas, no other Fords yet)

Oh yes, you can rock the car by the cans it's really solid... we've conducted high speed (well as high speed as you can in a knackered Mondeo TD) tests too. If you ever want to stick something really well get yourself some Evostick Ultra, it's impressive stuff
