Default 1988 Escort RS turbo

Ive recently swapped this for a nova 1.3 sr with a red top fitted. its my first ford so im a little clueless!

It appears to have had new wings, inner and outer sills, fresh doors and a respray. The respray isnt perfect so its booked in the bodyshop for a full wet sand and machine polish. there are also a couple of areas of light rust.2 areas on the roof starting to appear and 1 next to the screen.
There are 2 holes in the boot that need attention. looking under the car all seems solid which is good.
The wheels also need painted as there is a lot of laqure peel.

The carr had apparently stood in a garage for 6 years which would explain why the tyres are all perished and slowly go soft! LOL

The interior is clean with only the drivers seat a little tatty but i got a mint seat with the car so that will be going in.

Im currently rebuilding a spare bottom end that came with it as the current engine is knocking.

I hope to use the car for summer then sell it early next year to fund my next car which im hoping to get a sierra saphire cossie.

Luckily this is my 2nd car and ver rairly used, also stays in my garage so never gets wet!.

here are some pics anyways.

Swapped it with a guy from Hartlepool. It looks cleaner than it is to be honest. Its had a poor paint job but should be ok once its been wet sanded and machine polished, fingers crossed.

Default Small Update

Right, a small update. First off I got rid of the Momo race steering wheel and gear knob in favour of standard items. I know the standard wheel isnt to everyones liking but I think its ok.

I have also removed the front speakers and covers as they were hidious, also to be replaced with standard items.

I Think its looking better all ready.

There seems to be miles of after market speaker wire that im slowly removing

I have now removed the front bumper and lights/indicators.The front panel needs some cosmetic repairs and painting. Ill get some pics up of that tomorrow.

Please excuse the pedals. They will be going as soon as I get new pedal rubbers. Oh and the drivers seat is going as I have a mint replacement that came with the car. I decided against fitting the seat until the car was finished so I could keep it clean.

Ive removed the front bumper and lights. It has been plated in the usual place but I think ill but a new front panel for the area arounf the bumper mounts as plating is really a temp repair as the rot is still behind the plare. If I cut the area out around the bumper mounts and the same out the new panel it should last a few years.

I think if you do it right you only need do it once. I like my cars to be of a certain standard without spending a fortune on them.
Im lucky as im a mechanic for stagecoach so have access to all equipment at work and also mates at work who work in the bodyshop.

It wont be on the road till next summer now though.

Lovely little project you have there Adam

You know where i am if you need a replacement front panel bud and if it was me i would take
the whole front panel off and replace it with a complete one. So much easier and a much
neater job.

Keep up the good work

I know it would be better to replace the front panel but it must be a mare of a job with having to remove the wings.

No not at all Adam. There a doddle to do

All you need to do it drill out the spot welds where the slam panel meets
the outer wings and inner wings, underneath the indicator lens and where
the bumper mounts are and along the cross member and it will come away
with a bit of whacking LOL

I have circled on pic below when i done mine

Here is a better pic for you to see Adam As i said wings can stay on and wont move as there still spot welded and braced to the inner wings. I have highlighted the spot welds that need to be drilled out. If i still lived up there i would have come and done it for you but live in Chester now.

It certainly needs some TLC to bring it back up to standard. Starting at the front end working back. Engine is getting rebuilt, new front panel and crossmember, Fuse box reair panel and engine bay painted. Then around the screen and the roof and finally the boot floor. Should be mint by next summer.

Can you help with any history of the car? it is one thing letting the car down not having any history. I have applied to the DVLA for anything they hold on the car so when i get all the old V5s ill write to previous keepers to see if they have any documents or pictures. Its a long shot i know but worth a go.

I'll tell you what i know about the car. A very good friend of mine part-ex'd his 2wd saph in for it at juction 28 about 8-9 years ago but unfortunatly he passed away with cystic fibrosis after owning the car around a year, it sat in my unit & then another mates garage for a few years untill a lad called Ian bought it from his parents i think thats who had the car painted then it sat about for another year or so doing nothing untill Adam the lad you got it off got hold of it. As for the history im almost sure there was a folder in the car when it was parked up in my place but we are going back quite a few years now so i cant be 100% sure. Ill ask Adam & Ian next time i see them if they still have any history for the car that they maybe have forgot to pass on but I really wouldnt want to ask David's parents (my mate who passed away) and i would appreciate it if you diddnt write to them as it may bring back painful memories for them.

Ok I understand. Adam did give me a folder but it only had a few receipts in it. The fact that its been sat around for yeas would explain why the tyres slowly go falt all the time! LOL

Im not prepared to pay the sort of money they go for when the wheel ive got is just fine. There are loads of other things my money would be better spent on.

A quick update, the engine is now out.

This picture shows some of the Rot in the top of the front panel.

And the rot in the crossmember

I had a day off todat and was bored. The wiring loom will need to come out of the car to have the puse box repair panel fitted so I though I would crack on taking the carpet up. Taking the carpet up on one of these is always unpleasent as it reveals lots of rust.
I was however pleasently suprised as you can see from the pictures. There has been a repair to the N/S front footwell which I will tidy up and also there is some rust on the inner sill by the chassis number stamp.

Im very pleased!

I have had a quote for all the bodywork so it will be going in the end of next month hopefully.

Work getting done:

Front panel and crossmember replaced.
Engine bay painted
Fuse box repair panel welded in.
N/S front wing repaired
Round windscreen repaired (windscreen removed)
Roof repaired and painted.

All for £430, im supplying the panels though.
