Default ERST S2 Project-full shell resto.Now Keeping,updated 2/10/09

HI there Ford Fans,

For those of you that dont know, I have recently aquired a 88spec Escort rs turbo. i started the thread in the wrong place so decided to move it to the proper section

Its mercury grey with the following spec :-

superchip
collins -31 actuator
K&N Induction kit
Bailey Dump valve
SFS (pikey) HT leads
Early 90s ST/ST exhaust system

Here she is when i got her. I added the 17s on as it came with dodgy 15s and a set of shagged s2 originals, also added the clear lights the same night in a car park

The car went into my garage as it had a few problems. Namely, a knackered cooling system, all front bushes were shot, it hated being started from cold and shuddered all over the place,(like it wanted to leave the engine bay) and a hole in the boot the seller covered with alloys
On the plus side it came with a massive folder of history back to 89, smoothed boot and delocked doors but dead motors which are now fixed after a few hours of splicing cables lol also the underside is rust free apart from the bit in the boot and a good battery tray.
Its now had a new water pump, and a new thermostat as the other one was non existent, after taking the thermostat housing off i was shocked to see it was empty, have been told this was common in the early 90s.

After a few hours on the bay and hating my rusty rocker cover i found this one

and won it for £10 plus £8 postage. lovely jubbly

and also found

won for a fiver plus £20 postage lol

Heres a pic with the blue rocker, i know it looks a bit weird with the red crossover, want to have it polished soon

i have also bought some other parts
Bosch 0542 fuel pump (not noticed anybody else using this pump??)
Powerflex front susp bushes
Sytec mini bullet filter
EBC green stuff pads(front)

I have encountered a bit of a problem when i came to fit the fuel filter.its banjo fitment on the standard fuel filter and push on on the new one.does anyone know a easy way to sort this??

Planning on lots more mods soon, keep ya posted, thanks for looking

Hi people, just a quick update. after many many hours on the net and looking through countless demon tweeks and fast ford.i have now decided on the future plans for the car.hoping to be as follows:-

spax shortened shocks front & rear
cobra 50mm lowering springs
16" jap wheels (not saying which ones, its a suprise)
rear disc conversion

magnex 3" exhaust system inward rolled round tailpipe
front mount intercooler
ally rad
samcos
uprated head gasket
195 chip
T25 BB turbo
piper cam and adj vernier pulley
ap paddle clutch
lightened flywheel

hoping to run 15-16 psi of boost.not going for a massive T3 cuz the car boosts up lovely at 2000 revs and i love it, so going smaller to keep the lag down
and dont wanna take the mick out of my internals and box by pushing to many horses through it,so keeping to the above for now.should be very quick for the summer
and move on to forged internals later on.
other mods also planned but there under wraps for now.

whats every1s take on the 5th injector an ive a funny feeling ill need 1 lol,but heard mixed things about them. any comments/help/advice appreciated.

Nice little project mate.
Dont bother wasting your money on an uprated headgasket. Standard Ford ones have been proven to take 350BHP

and yes turboloon ur probably right but my clutch at the moment wont last that much longer so when i replace it,i will put the ap in. as it wont be running 15psi forever.

Default S2 resto update!!! 22/07/09

Hi People,

sorry have not posted for a while, well all the hecticness had died off and the garage block isn't being attacked anymore, thank fcuk

Decided that i wanted to make sure my shell wasnt absolutely rotten, before spending my hard earned £££S on it,so made a start taking off the bumpers and bodykit today.

removed the front bumper to reveal:

(sorry, the pic is after it got anti-rusted lol)

not too bad on the front really.
The side mounts where the bumper scews on underneath the arch:

the other side after a bit off prodding with a screwdriver

The front panel had split so gave it a bit more prodding with a screwdriver lol and endud up with

on the passenger side just behind the front panel, the disease has started to take over, resulting in

really though,it could have been a lot worse. And when i took the inner arch covers off i was very pleased to see

BOOM!! all waxoyled up inners with no rust in sight, now thats what i call nice 1
gonna have the bit behind the front panel done with a new welded in patch, but for now have antirusted every infected part in sight,so hope that will keep it at bay for the time being.

Plans for the morrow are, removing the back bumper and rear inner arch covers and check for rust, also the fuel pump cradle as that looked a bit worse for ware last time i checked.
Want to get the sideskirts off aswel but they're being a bit of a bastard to get off as they were glued on,aswel as the arch covers but theres no rust behind those as far as i can tell.
The underneath looks spot on apart from a tiny bit of surface rust under the sideskirts, hence why i want em off lol
Plan is to give the whole underneath and arches etc another coat of waxoyl anyway to be on the safeside,as well as my respray.(gonna keep it grey).

am finally feeling like am getting somewhere with the car, will update tommorow with more pics.

well my m8 paid £950 notes just after xmas off ebay, and i swapped a £700 pound laptop some mk2 golf parts, and 250 quid as he spent 100 quid on new parts for it that he didnt fit and it he chucked in the clear lights for the back,so not a bad deal really.

ok peeps, have been up the garage and finished taking the bodykit and bumpers, theres a little bit of surface rust just starting to break through underneath the spare wheel well on the bottom but its nothing really, barely broken through the waxoyl.sorry the next set of pics are a bit shit, theyre off a phone and the back of my garage is a bit dark lol

next on the agenda is taking the interior out, take all the carpet etc up and make sure thats all ok,then saving up the pennies for a new respray lol.

will update with more pics soon.

im gonna take em off lol ive seen the black bumper strips in a fat roll on the bay for 35 nicker,a bit deer but not to bad.
havent had chance to go up the garage and do any more work, but have got rid of my 17s for a 10" vibe 1300watt sub and a 1200w vibe monoblock amp plus a new 65 quid aquascutum top,so not bad really as the alloys cost me 200.and the audio equipment cost my m8 400 wen he bought it and its only been in his car a month,so bargain.
anyways, will post pics of new audio equipment tommorow and will post pics off strip out interior this week, and have just landed a £7.00 ph job 20 hours a week so a few more pennies to spend,so should be updating regularly from now on.
easy

@ Bigryrs , yea to rite m8,need some engine bling now lol.havent been bin touch for a while as couldnt find that goddamn certificate, even though its gotta be here somewhere,so thought you would have lost interest.

anyways, just a quick update.heres a couple of pics of the new sub and amp,i love it gonna give a nice thump.

havent been able to go up to the garage yet cuz the weathers been shit, and cuz my garage is so small i need to roll the car outside to be able to take out the interior and i dont wanna get it wet and invite the rust to eat more of the car.

will be up the garage as soon as its not raining, and stripping the interior out to check 4 rust,so will update soon.

start the new job on tuesday, feels good to no will have more pennies comin in each week to finally get some stuff bought for the car.

rite people,i hope this post works out properly lol.
over the past few days have been doing some work on the RS,stripping it more to check for rot.heres a few photos

managed to get half of the factory soundproofing up,it was hiding a bit of surface rust.

need a plate welded on the smaller bit,as theres a small hole and its pretty weak.

finally removed the red strips and the rear RS badge.

and it was all going so well until we removed some of the headlining and found this.

am going up the garage in a minute to try and remove the sunroof so can see how bad it is,i know its going to be rotten to fcuk, looks like the sunroof has been leaking for ages.am going to try and temporary repair it until i can afford a carbon fibre roof.will update later on tonight

rite then people, have been up the garage and removed the sunroof with the help of dave(cheers again m8).
the result was this:

those pics were as soon as we lifted the sunroof out.it was a bit of a bastard, one of the screws was proper rusted on,we wd'd it,hit it with a hammer a few times and even tried anti rut gel on it but in the end we had to drill it off.
this is how my roof stands.

this bit is at the front of the car by the edge of the sunroof.

left back side of the roof

the middle of the roof

the right hand side of the roof

i was pretty gutted to see this as the rest of the car is 90% mint, after a bit of thinking etc ive decided im going to anti rust and anti rust primer as much of the roof as i can to try and hold it back, possibly cut the 2nd layer of the roof out so can stop the rust sreading underneath the roof as its really bad (is this legal)?and maybe have a panel welded over the sunroof?as i dont want one anymore as its the reason my roofs fucked.this is only a temporary plan until i can afford the carbon fibre roof which is £510,does anyone know how its fitted and if it requires a roll cage as i want the back seats?
this is what my sunroof looked like

rusty piece of shit lol

the runners for the sunroof.
im glad its out and its also a bit fucked now, some of it snapped when removing it lol but im glad it did

overall the shell is in pretty good condition as it was all waxoyled underneath and in the arches etc, theres 2 or 3 small plates i need welding in the floorpan and the wheel well done in the boot, will get pics of the holes soon.
theres a fair bit of surface rust but am gonna take the angle grinder to that, remove the windows etc and anti-rust and anti rust primer the whole inside of the shell and paint it grey.

the holes

a bit in the back of the boot

under the back seats

the other side

the passenger side.

thers been a plate welded here in the past.needs anti rusting etc and sorting out.

want to sort this bit out as its been fillered in the past and looks a bit rough.

as it stands it looks like its been caught just in time,6 months later and it could have been a lot worse,at least its all fixable lol.

heres a random pic of my m8 dave

its such a shame about the rust because i think it looks pretty mint on the outside.

ok peeps well will update soon, mite try get the windows etc out tommorow and the dash,if i can find somewhere to put it lol am running out of space in the garage.

ok then folks, have been up the garage again today.heres a pic of one of the other projects me and dave are working on.(the car is daves).

he bought it last feb completely standard.its stage 1 230bhp.coming of the road for resto after my RST is done.what do we think of it?

and the other project is a mk2 golf gti 8v.

ANYWAY.back to the escort.got the rear side windows out today and glad we did.

any longer and the rust would have spread.

finally got the 88 spec spoiler of,had to drill it,the boots fucked anyway and need a new one .looks better with the 90 spec

found a bit more rust today.a hole in the engine bay.next to the fusebox.

a bit on the boot mount on the roof.

and my doors underneath the seals are skanky.

its decided now am going for the carbon fibre roof, and am going to angle grind and sand all the rust of the shell, then anti-rust,then anti rust primer the whole of the car, inside and out,and underneath, spray mercury grey again and then fit the roof.
we now have power, hinted at the guy who lives behind the garages, and we can now run a lead from his to the garage.
so once the shell is done, new suspension, wheels and tyres and a few bits on the engine and itl be back on the road.and now ive got another job (start monday) i can see it happening now.keep you updated people.

Ok then guys, bit of an update.after 5 weeks of doing well and getting sales at work they wanted to put me on commission only, right before xmas,no thankyou.so looking for another job again.

nothing more actually done on the shell yet,as need to get a bit of cash together for the welding,if i cant get a job it should be january, hopefully i do and get it done sooner.gotta get a couple of long extension leads and a light so can work on the shell and start derusting.and some anti rust primer and paint for the inside of the shell.

have done a little bit of work though.

turned these rusty front speaker brackets

with a bit of work and anti rust etc

into

sorry not the best pic, need a better one but my mates borrowed the memory card adapter.
But all sprayed up black,im quite pleased really, actually the 2nd time ive sprayed anything in my life.

also started anti rusting, anti rust primering, painting the seat belt brackets and other brackets that are bolted onto the shell,no point putting rusty things on once ive got a mint shell.but there not finished, will post pics when thats done.

and i also cut out the front bumper.

i know alot of people dont like it,and it makes the bumper weaker but i like it.

its not finished yet, still gotta smooth down the edges and sand it down ready for paint etc,and the plate is only positioned roughly there at the mo.

ok folks well will try and keep busy and post up when ive got some news.
p.s was toying with reshelling this project but am not no.gonna crack on and get it done, albeit if slowly lol

cheers
