Escort MK3 Cabriolet SE restoration week 7 update
So here we go again.
Started to strip the car down and have found that it is a solid car and no rot anywhere.
Went and got all the paint on Monday £140, so could do with the weather warming up a bit now so I can make a start, will do the bodywork repairs in the meantime.
Have had a field day on ebay already buying parts that I want to replace.
Need to get some of the interior re upholstered, but going to get that sorted once the bodywork is right.
Also going to get a new white hood for it as well.
Not doing a full nut and bolt restoration, due to 1 it does not need one and two I intend to use it most days, along with the XR2, if I did a full nut and bolt restoration it would stay in the garage and be trailered around, and personally I don’t see the point in that, but everyone to their own.
Here are the first pics and let the restoration begin.

Well been out again over the weekend doing a bit more, gunked the engine bay and power washed it to get all the crap out, look out for the scary rocker cover I think someone had too much time of their hands.
Done most of the repairs on the passenger side no rot just car park dints.
Sorted the repairs on passenger door, just got to sort out drivers door (which will take a bit as there is quite a lot of work to do on it), then the drivers rear 1/4 panel.
Going to pick some 90's spec recaro front seats up at weekend, need to change the middle cloth as it is different to mine, it is the grey pin hole cloth, if anyone knows a good upholster in my area, or knows where I can get the cloth from please let me know.
The original front seats are knackered.

Done some more work on drivers doors nearly repaired now, then it can go in my workshop ready to be painted along with the passenger door, bonnet & boot inside and out, got a big fooking jet heater in there that burns you skin after 3 mins, so should be warm enough to do some painting.
Still need to prep all the body kit and bumpers yet and sort wheels out, but think I will get the car painted first before I start doing the shinny bits.
Still need to find a upholster or somewhere I can get the recaro cloth from.
Does anyone know how I can lift the back part of the hood up without removing all the hood or interior, because I have to work on the car outside sometimes so still need the hood on just incase?

Week three update
Striped all panels and painted them inside and out in the workshop, stripped the bumpers, grill, mirrors cant believe how many parts there is on this car.
Striped shell, (cant believe there is no rot on the car this must be down to the wax oiling) time to start on this now to get it ready for painting next weekend.
Will start to build the car up once it is finished being painted, then I will paint the kit, once this is all done, then fit the kit back on the car, then give it all a good polish, whilst the interior is at the upholsters, that’s the plan anyway.
Will strip the engine bay last.
Pics and updates as they happen.
Cheers for all your comments guys

Well had a couple of early finishes this week and managed to get the body in primer.
So hopefully the topcoat should be on by the end of the weekend, and then it will be time to paint the kit and put everything back together.

Week 4 update
Well been doing a bit more this weekend, car is now painted and started to build it up again, I have painted the inside of the engine bay, cleaning and painting the bits that I am putting back, try to find time in the week to get the doors back on, they I can start on repairing a few cracks on the kit, so will have to do a bit of plastic welding, then I will be able to paint the body kit in the workshop, then next weekend start to flat and polish the car.
Can’t believe how much paint it is taking used 4 litres already, will have to go and get some more to do the body kit.

Started to build to car back up now the body kit has been painted. Should be able to get the doors back on by weekend, but going to polish them before I refit them.
Fitted the brand new headlights, indicators and spot lights on the front, the old ones were not to bad but managed to source some brand new gen fords for the right money, so decided to but them on.
Will post some more pics at the weekend.

Week 5 update
Built all the boot interior up, refitted carpet, panels and backlights. Started to put some of the decals back on as well, just the passenger door to fit, flat and polish then the stripe can go on the passenger side.
New white hood being fitted this week, I am off this week so should get a lot more done.
The rocker cover is going will sort this out when I start on the engine, which is staying as it is as I want the car to be original, in my opionon this makes the car more desirable, but as they say everyone to there own. I am not a speed freak but did own one of these up till a few months ago, but it seamed to stay parked in the garage rather than being driven.
Then next on the list will be the wheels take the tyres off and repaint them all back and front, and then the new tyres can go on.
By the way thanks for your comments guys.

Week 6 update
Right nearly there hood was fitted this week, well chuffed with it, cleaned all head lining and got the interior back together, drivers recaro will be going to the upholsters this week, decided to have a go at repairing the dash, took me a full day to do this, and the rest of the interior cleaned up really well. Done a bit of reupholstering myself.
Striped and repainted the wheels and fitted new centre caps, so the tyres should be going back on tomorrow, still need to paint another two yet.
The nasty rocker cover, started to flat it down, but realised it would take forever, so decided to get the Nitro Mors on it only took 15mins and it was all gone, the I repainted it and gave it a coat of lacquer, just need to order the engine bay stickers.
Next week under body wax oiling and engine service.

Week 7 update
Got a bit more done this week, new stainless exhaust fitted all wheels painted complete with tyres now. Done all the wax oiling and engine service is also now done.
The boot interior is now finished with spare wheel and jack.
Here some pics of the engine bay after sorting it out, i.e. cleaning and spraying things.
Just need to sort immobiliser for it then tax and insurance should be on the road by the 1st of next month.
Still waiting for seat to come back from the upholstery’s.
Cant decide what hood cover to put on it I have a white or grey one.
Took a bit longer and bit of a hard slog that the last but think it was worth it, if you set yourself goals each week and tick them off the list, then it comes along and before you know it you are there.
At the end of the day it is just a hobby that I enjoy.
