1971 Beetle
This is actually taken from my thread in the classifieds, but after looking at it i thought id edit it and show it as a restoration thread also.
I really enjoyed restoring this car, due to so much metal work being done already, it was a dream to work on!
Ok the car i bought it last year, sold my escort cossie on the thursday and it left such a hole i went and bought this on the friday afternoon
The chap selling it to me had bought the car for its engine, as it had a 1641 dual carbed motor pushing serious bhp. It was a failed restoration project, as so many restos end up this way
Anyway the chap before him who gave up on the resto, had spend a serious amount of money having body work done. I have a recipt here for restoration welding work carried out on the car, and the bill comes to around £1100. So as you can imagine the car is now a genuine 100% rust free, it had new sills, aprons, pillars, front innerwings, floor pan halves.
This is the only reason i really decided to buy the project, as it was just to good to turn down, and also for centimental reasons as i had an orange bug as my first car.
So here are some pics of the car from the advert i saw
And here the next day on my drive
Trial body fit before work begins
Chassis was sandblasted and then given generous coats of chassis gloss black
The body was refitted to the chassis with nice new rubber seals, zinc bolts and washers.
After a solid week of prep, on went the VW 'brilliant orange'
Wheels were blasted and treated to a lovley coat of VW 'stein grey'
Rears are 2" bannded - circa 1972 from an old buggy, and booted in michelins.
A 1300 was sourced from a good friend with a rotten 1967 cabrolet barn find with nice low mileage, complete with "turbo trip" exhaust and very solid heat exchangers. engine was treated to a new clutch and a host of goodies, And body wise a shopping list as long as your arm was made up for new parts!
Car was booked in for MOT on 09/01/09, and sailed through, infact the tester walked underneath it and said "i'm waisting my time here proding around for faults aren't I!" which put a big smile on my face.
Car was insured and a FREE tax disk slapped on the screen.

Did you notice my landrover change colour
I so want to do another Series 1, but with a twist this time.
Every time i sell a car i tell my wife thats it, thats the last one. But i cant help my self.
Ive restored so far
this 1971 1300 beetle
1970 1200 beetle
1949 beetle
1969 mk1 escord mex rep
1985 S1 Rst
1971 Aston DBS
Not to mention the Escos, mk2 VR6 and other golfs and my landrover ive done major work/alterations to.
every time i say thats it, ive had enough, but i dont know if i ever will?
think i need to see a pychologist

lee, i have some porsche design 90 wheels
this is what im hoping for
regards the engine, i am tempted, but unsure on costs, as it would stand me at quite a bit by the time a turbo and management, manifolds went on, compared to the 1.8T conversion i am swaying more towards.

I just know the 1.8 can be very expensive to tune up, where as the VR6 is a lot more simple, and being such a solid engine can take the extra punishment of forced induction well!

know what you mean lee, but 250hp is easily achievable from a BAM engine with a cooler, and a map. where a vr would need turbo management, cooler, injectors, map, spacer plate, manfiolds front and back etc etc
