update 22-10-11
ok folks ,
pleased to say were back on with the car !!!
i know its been a while but other things have taken priority noteably work and my daughter lol
anyway , got the car moved last weekend to my brothers new house , and after speaking with k , we thought first thing first should be to mock up the rear end and see how its looking as obviously when we built the car we didnt have all the parts to hand to mock up then
so a upright , steering arm , bearings wheel ect were taken to k's place and assembled ,
not to many pics but i was more intrested in actuall working on it lol
so pic of the car in its new home ,
the dolly was removed and the cradle refitted ,
rear assembly , including a 8.5 x 18 rl7 rim
now as im goign for bigger rears with the tubs ect the escos lenght tubes wont work , so these will be made to length once the rear wheel is where we want it ,
strut/ wheel assembly was then test fitted to the car ,
looks rather nice if i do say so ,
as you can see shes running in 4x4 mode
the coilover to wheel center is bang on the money
now when i got these old avo coilovers we had a good feeling they were going to be to long from the onset , so it was no surprise they topped out on the strut being 4x4 fronts there a 13 inch long body ,
so after looking at karls leada 3 ways that measure in at 10 inch long bodys thats around the length were aiming for
so ill be intouch with avo on monday to see what they can do ....
was kinda left there for now good idea of whats needed and cant measure lengths till we have shockers ,
but the bug is deffo back , prob much to the dismay of the missus whos becomeing a car widow again !!
so few bits to buy in the next couple weeks ,
aim is to have it rolling by eairly december , till then got loom and some other parts to go on and mock up !!!
but we back baby !!!!!!

hi beef looking good ,but dont forget the shorter the links the more aggresive the camber change can you get trailing link in with a wider rear wheel , combined with the short the wheel base and standard front end you have lost the original ackerman effect then with the wrong offset the rear was designed for you have lost the scrub line you might have handling issues ie bump steer etc ,just take this into account when you choose the offset
give us a ring if i can help mate
thanks mark

as with the fronts its going to be fully adjustable just cant see the point in a front upright setup at the moment , plan is to get the car to a rolling shell then go and have the setup anyalysed and dialled in if they point out any serious issues regarding the overall setup we will deal with them before fully building up the car ,
rears will be 9 x 18 et 45 rears ,
cheers mucka Ź
thanks for the positive comments peeps

hi beef what i mean is geometry is desiged knowing the ride height ,wheel base ,wheel offset track etc etc ,and the standard front end is desiged for a car with a longer wheel base than yours so the front steering arms are all wrong ,this will alter the ackerman effect ,shorter rear links will alter the way the camber changes through suspension travel and you cant alter that with top mounts ,also altering the rear wheel offset will alter scrub line ,i dont want you to build a stunning looking car that is a pig to drive ,having it set up wont compensate for the wrong geometry ,if you need advise just ring mate
thanks mark
thanks mark
Can you explain scrub line please mate ?
Also my wheel ofset will be a lot different to the usual 33 ??

the difference in the width and the length of the wheel centres is what affects everything else and with him using bigger wheels than the original sierra bits were designed to be used with, this will upset the numbers even further
with pictures?
in your minds eye, picture a box that is 12 inches long, 8 inches wide and 4 inches tall
now picture a box that is 10 inches long, 7 inches wide and 5 inches tall
it's still a box right? but the angles for everything corner to corner are different which, if you put a wheel on each corner, would upset everything and if you are still doing the steering with the rack that is designed to do either or, you can see how this can rapidly affect everything else as well
everything else is based on the box figures, so you camber, castor, and all the angles that the suspension will move through when you are out on the track all need to be taken into account as well as driving it on normal roads where pot holes and shit will cause massive issues if it's set up wrong
2 examples that spring to mind are:
driving a big car like a mondeo and a small car like a fiesta, the fiesta will change direction much quicker as it's got a shorter wheelbase which is great for being nimble but not so good at going round really long corners
and the differences between the front geometry on a 2wd and 4wd sierra, they look the same but have fairly different settings, including the shape of the front arb's and the toe settings which take into account the front wheels are actually driven rather than just pushed along by the rears
i'm sure someone will come along soon to explain everything by way of a website but i'm sure you have understood what i've wrtten
