Restoration on a whim!?
Two months ago i sold my beloved Escort RS Cosworth, after 1 day of not being able to bear the 14' x 6' hole left in the workshop i decided i had to buy something that night.
Anyway an hour on the web and i found a little jem on here.
Back when i was 14 i bought a bug and saved it from the scrappy, and saw it still driving aorund this year, so i decided another orange bug was in order. Id also recently sold my 1949 beetle, and was gutted about that also, as well as a s1 rst & mk1 escort. So why not go full circle and get what i had 1st time round
my 1st bug at 14
my 49
cossie
S1
Mk 1
Anyway that night i drove up to lakenheath and bought this
£200
The chap i bought it from, bought the car to take the 1641 out of it, that was all, but the chap before him had £1200 worth of welding work done, including sills, front clip, new chassis pan halves. so i got a right bagin!!!
heres it home the next day
and a quick fit to make sure the bodys not twisted
restoring the chassis, as it was basically new, just needed a soft brush down and painting
anyway body back on, and time for the prep work
Sprayed the old girl 2 weeks ago
Anyway after nearly 2 months this is the old girl yesterday
,still a bit to do, but i think im pleased with the outcome.
my shiny new disk brake kit turned up today
Total cost so far including purchase is £1100, i was hoping to get it on the road for £1000, but its looking like £1500, still im happy with that. Only problem is what do i buy next

On the mk 1 escort it was sea blue paint and the seats were turquoise
after painting it ermine white, i died the seats black and they looked amazing.
YOur in romford yeh? i may be intrested still. im colchester so not too far away. i think if i had ur seat set, i could always take the rear material off and cover the bug seat with it, might look a bit more at home rather than 2 random seats in the front! Steve (?) PM me ur details and maby we can sort a deal

Haha well spotted, well i bought it with the intent of putting a scobbie engine or 911 engine in it.
but the purists nearly sent the lynch mob round, and is was a 1949!!! these things go for £25k+ restored.
The parts were so hard to find (and i thought S1 rst bits were rare)
if i tell you i paid £450 for a pair of unrestored semaphores (the orange indicator sticks that pop out the side of the car when u indicate)
And over £200 for an interior light u get the idea!!
anyway i restored the chassis, it has CABLE brakes and a full crash gearbox with no syncro, it took a long time to find bits for that.
i got the body on did the prep and got it into primer, then someone offered my £7700 for it in that condition so i decided as my heart wasnt in it anymore i let it go.
Ive just been offered a mk2 golf GTI for £200,similar to this
it just needs a tyre for mot
would i be silly to get it someone stop me

You wernt at stanford hall a year or two back were you?
found some more pics of the 1949 as i sold it
the restored chassis
If i tell you this is only about half of the parts that i managed to track down, and theres the best part of £4000 there
So sell the bug and gti it up??? as u probably guess i dont keep my toys for long, i get too bored!!.

It amazes me how we got away with it really, when you look back it was sooo dangerous, but did look the nuts
