Default 1989 MFI Escort XR3i Convertible

1989 with MFI engine XR3i cabriolet in Amethyst (Purple). Car has an original RS Turbo bonnet and Rear spoiler. Original interior is not recaro or leather.

My car has no front callipers or discs and is sitting on Alloys are 6 X 15 with 205X5015 Tyres. It also has no rear bumper.

Basically….. I have picked this car up for next to nothing and am planning to do work on it. Like smoothing off the bumpers (once I find a rear one), sorting the front brakes (any advice on up rating these quite cheaply?), Giving the engine a full service.

Any advice, tips, help or general ideas for it would be much appreciated….

Thanks for looking. Nick

Just taken the bumper off the front of the car and found quite a bit of rust meaning im going to have to change the front panel. I have checked a couple other places where there is usually quite a bit of rust build up (Battery Tray and Fuse box) And these are in fairly good condition going by the pictures of other peoples cars.

Where else should I look as major problem areas of rust on my car? Im new to Escorts so if anyone could help point me in the direction to the major culprits.

Cheers

Nick

you may as well give the it a good lookin over for any rust. you dont want to get half way through a project then have to scrap it! nice colour, never seen one in that before.

for the brakes have a look in the rs turbo room there is a sticky at the top of the page that tells you everything you need and how to do convert front and rears to cossie stuff.
good luck on the resto

A little help please,

I have been given a set of gmax 60mm g max shocks and spings front and rear, complete with shoxker tops/mounts for my mk4 escort cabriolet.

I have spoke to a lot of people and they have told me this is too low and will ruin the ride. What i want to know is will these struts be ok if i get a new set of springs? (35-40mm?) I may be being a bit dim here but any help would be helpful.

Thanks in advance.

i would never ever ever run 60mm shocks on my cabbie.

For a cabby I would suggest standard tops, Koni adjustables and chassis dynamic springs with a 25mm drop
I personally think the cabby handles bad imho with anything more than a 25mm drop

I know, turns out they arent 60mm gmax springs they are 40mm, but for the rs turbo. Not sure if it will be same drop or not as think cabrio is heavier.
