Default 1982 MK3 Escort Sunburst Red Restoration

Hello everyone, new member from portsmouth here ! Last night me and a mechanic mate who loves fords and has 2 cossies, opened up my garage to this sight...

ive owned this since 1995, my 1st car !!!

1982 a reg escort mk3 , sunburst red, 2 door, full xr3 kit and interior, clover leaf wheels, and a 1300 engine kit and interior, clover leaf wheels, 1300 engine

[IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG]

Were now setting about a full resoration project, getting the shell 100% rock solid, and once done putting a new engine in it, either an xr3 or rs1600 engine or something like that !

the outside is fairly nice condition concidering, interior isnt too bad bit mouldy but a lot of that wiped straight off, dash area is al good, my mate checked it over and said front end seems fairly solid, but underneath id a bit rotten and needs a lot of work , so its not moving at the moment the sills etc need complete replacing and the floor pans etc , he spoke to a local company today who can supply all panels needed for good prices, sills £16, floor pans £20 odd etc if anyones ever done a project like this before,

please let us know any doos and donts and what we should do and any and every bit of info !! also if theres anyone who can supply parts we need, post here !! ,

so we had a look, cleared all the crap out of the garage and swept it out, only 2 of the tyres pumped up , and the spare was ok, 2 tyres were perished, today hes rang me from work (a garage) and hes found a couple of old tyres we can use to just get it rolling,we also have a good mate whos a body repair expert and sprayer ,which is handy , were gonna show him tonight !! we gave it a little wipe and the color came shining through !!

[IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG]

just thought id post on here and look forward to joining in the forum and hearing what you have to say !!
any advice/thoughts appriciated, as im not mechanicly minded, and hes never restored a car from this condition before, but were both hungry to learn and get the car back on the road !!!

1st thing id advise is getting goos security due to the rarety aned how easy they are to steal. for restoring it you said you have your spraying bloke sorting the body, so id personally look for the other type bumpers like on mine and the rs1600i's etc if you would like a rep and perhaps a nice fietsa turbo engine?

Right day 2

went back yesterday, had to remove the 2 wheels and get the locking nuts of, put the spare on the back and we managed to carefully roll it out, we managed to have a good look at it, get all 4 wheels moving and tyres inflated, so it can now be moved

heres various pics showing the condition were starting with !

theres a local place we can get all panels from no problem devlivered next day free to my mates garege he works at (then he can bring them home from work)

Next step- were gonna take all the interior and carpets out, then get my 2 mates, and the panel beater bloke , to all have a good look at it, and decide exactly what condition the shell and chassis is in and what exactly is needed panel and work wise, and then total up the costs for all panels needed

then decide what to do !!

please let me know what you think of the condition from these pics , and how they compare to other resos you have done or seen , and any rough figures hoe much cost wise you think im looking at to get this shell solid and total cost roughlyish ? , as really i need to know rough figures as im not minted with unlimited cash to spend, main thing is to just know roughly how much to get the car as it is rock solid and rough cost...to get to the point where its solid with all panels sorted, to the point where im thinking about spraying/engine/interior/cosmetic bits

thanks ppl !

here she is the 1st time out i over a decade !!

what do you reckon ?

i think cost wise ,making an rs1600i is gonna come out too expensive and would be easier/cheaper to buy an rs to do up, so probably gonna get an xr3 carb engine with a performance cam and webber carb etc, and have it original 80s mr3 style ! , keep the clovers and get all xr3 bits

anyone got or know of where i can get a few bits let me know, could do with an engine on the south coast/hampshire area somewhen, il keep my eyes open over the next few months ,but most important at mo is to get the interior stripped out, get a good look at the shell and see how much shes gonna cost to get rock solid !

Costs depend on many things really, if you have mates in the trade who are willing to do the work then it will be alot cheaper.

Good luck with it and i think you have the right idea keeping it XR3, you never see them around anymore.

thanks mate !

im very lucky really my mates are helping me out, as without them id have to pay for the complete lot, which i couldnt do and the car would be left to rot !, but as my mechanic mate loves fords, hes well up for it ,so all mechanic work will be free and all labour is free, all i have to do is pay for all the parts needed and il do as much work and help out as much as i can and learn a lot along the way about the car !

xr3 is the original 80s, so thats how its gonna be , not as expensive either, to buy an rs interior/engine/styling, plus re wiring the car will cost a small forune !

as its near like an xr3, thats defo the best way to go

just need to get the interior all stripped out, hopefully tomorrow and give the shell and floor a good assesment and see whats needed !

day 3 -

stripped it right down so we can see what were dealing with, now time to see exactly what we need and how much is gonna cost, then weight it all up

please can i have some advice and opinons, as weve never sene or done anything like this before, thanks folks !!

i figure if we can get the shell rock solid by say spending £200 or under on the panels needed, im getting all the labour for free , then its worth doing ?

possibly need ...full sills and interior sills, floor pans, 2 front wings, 2 doors, what else ?

were going back in asap with the bodywork lads n seeing exactly whats needed, he said the front and rear ends semm pretty solid, the roofs nice, all the roof lining is very tidy and just needs a clean, its just that bottm middle section really, il be able to get it all painted inside and a nice new spray job all for a drink too, which is a bonus

and shes back in the garage , awaiting the verdict on its fate !!

Hi restoring a 1983 mk3 escort ghia, 46,000 miles, one family owner with full history, in sunburst red so a nice car all in all !!!

But having trouble locating a few things, managed to get some of the body panels, ie lower door skins, rear arches etc but i need at the moment to obtain a passenger front head rest does anyone know how this could be done, im really struggling, hoping to maybe get her to as near to new looking as poss, mechanically she is absolutely perfect, but its little things like the headrest which will annoy me if i cant get one

cheers

hi thanks for the replies, this is a great forum!!
at the moment all the chrome is perfect even the trims on the wheels, this scort must of been garaged or something, really looking forward to doing the wheels, im a bit of a part-time painter not mechanical at all but i employ a mechanic who as it turns out used to work on these type ford escorts when they were new so dropped lucky there.
But having lots of fun learning about the engine side of it, so far ive found there to be a core plug leaking, 3.50 from main dealer, water pump had play on the cambelt driven bit so that could of been nasty if left £18.50 from a motor supplies, putting a new cambelt on, taken the maniforld exhaust off to put a new gasket on, nowt wrong with the old one but had to take it off to do the core plug so might aswell replace it for the sake of £3, radiator leaking, all really easy to do so it seems but from what i understand they are!!!

cheers martin
