do either of you know if swapping in the n/a inlet cam off the 2.5 is possible or beneficial on a T5?

Yes it can be.

Speaking from experiance with the 4 cylinder white blocks (T4 / 2.0T) I've changed both inlet and exhaust cams from my 2.0T to n/a with very good results.

The only problem is (if this applies to the 5 cylinder) depending on the year the engines can be fitted with either hydraulic or mechanical lifters and the cams are not interchangeable.

Also, I'm not sure how far along the timeline you are with your mods but if you're running a standard td-04 housed turbo (16T etc) these are somewhat of a backpressure monster and although the n/a cams do give added perfromance, they're more suited with larger housings. Not sure if this applies so much if you're only going to swap the inlet cam though.

Russ no doubt will be able to tell you more.

for a start Ill run it standard, 400bhp/tonne should be ok for a good while. After that ill be aiming for about 380bhp with 300ftlbs helf from 3500 to 7k ish. Probably run a GT30 and a boost controller, standalone and a new exhaust manifold.

Reason for the torque cap is grip, and being able to use cheap, standard bottom ends and heads.

I just know in the vauxhall xe and let motors, in higher states of tune its worth 20+BHP!

cheers

haha,

I'm not in the cossy world either.

Just wondered on Cam spec as this will obviously change the powerband massively which does look pretty narrow.

As Andy has said there CAN be improvments made from N/A cams but i have never seen someone do any proper testing which i hope to change soon

Hi A

If you do run the car with an autronic Sm4 it has nice standard features like launch control and traction control

The 2.5 20v cams do have more lift but they are also a longer duration.
inlet is 250dr 8.45lift,exhaust is 252 dr and also 8.45 lift. Not sure you would see alot of gain TBH
Standard T5 cams are inlet 242 lift 7.95 and exhasut 243 with 7.95 lift.I have some piper cams in mine they are pretty mild but made a fairly big difference. As Andy p has said the big restriction is the tdo4 exhaust housing.

A few updates had another run on the rollers yesterday to see if the claims people make that N/A cams are better in the volvos well i found it had lost 10 hp over last time but really wanted to run the car on race fuel to see what happens

Flwheel

Wheels

The car made it home after ok but i think i have an ill turbo as Rod said to me after the run you cannot develop a 591 bhp car without a few setbacks

I still have much work left to do but the testing process continues .

I will be back.

Some good power there.

Have you installed darton sleeves?

What work have you done to ensure the bore doesn't split / deform?

Its the later 2.5 block in the newer cars and the focus st's that are spliting liners. The 2.3 blocks get taken to 750-800 before liners in Sweden

Ok Time for a few updates

After the last run on the rollers where we made 591/524 ftlbs on the race fuel i went to do another run the car started to smoke not badly but there was smoke there so run aborted to see what i had damaged after having the turbo checked and all was ok i started to look at the engine i had at first thought the headgasket had not liked the race fuel which can happen but then found this

I had thought it could of happended on the 2.3 block as the V70R and focus ST's are having crack's in liners even with stage one let alone 591 hp so now i have found out for myself and other future customers where the limit is of the 2.3 so i am now looking at the best routes to cure the problem for good.

I thought it would interest some people to show what happens when you push the limit of the parts designed for 240 bhp its a set back but one that will make the car 100 % reliable once i have finished my R&D .

If your running the standard 2.3 block and claim to have more than 600 hp i would say

My breather system and dump valve has arrived i am going to do away with the volvo pot etc and try this out :

I have now got the time to spend to do all the small jobs i have been meaning to do on the car so took to the bonnet with a drill and hole saw

I have decided to have a roll cage added to the car and also plan a few more changes to the inside of the car

He will have a nice neat loom installed next week, the rats nest fitted (Russes development wiring) was losing him about 200bhp well thats what it looked like .
Cant wait for this to get completed, it will be a very fast car indeed .

A friend of mine had a standard T5-R and it was useless in the wet, just spun up constantly, this one must be a handful!!!

Im actually re-wiring it, not up to Q standards but looking good. I suggested doing the Q mod of threading the fuel pump wires through the spare wheel so it cant be removed but Russ dont want such extreme mods as hes only looking at 600bhp.
