Default How would one improve Accerleration

If I bought a vehicle with the spec below when i pass my test how would i go about improving the accerlation on the car.

5 Doors, Manual, Petrol, Power assisted steering, MARK 1

I want to start modding a Ford Focus which is about to be passed down to me from my father, but I was wonder what should I be looking at getting to improve its acceleration?

Induction Kit?
New Sparkplugs?
Better exhaust system?

i think this is in the wrong section to be honest, you'd get lots more replies in GD.

lots of things can be done, the first and cheapest would be to remove excess weight!

you could sort the breathing out (intake and exhaust) to release a few more bhp. what engine does the car have?

Hey, thanks for your reply. I would really appreciated if you have the premissions to move this thread into GD for me.

Hmmm, making the vehicle as lightweight as possible does seem to tbe the most logical solution. However I don't think I really want to be stripping the vehicle just to make it lightweight as possible.

The Focus has a 1.6 petrol engine, sorry the most obvious thing that I should have listed I tottally forgot lol.

Hmmm, I think i'll just google some exhaust intake valves and exhaust systems to see what I can find.

Use a shorter gearbox and the biggest engine Ford ever put into this car. THIS would improve acc more than a lightweight 1.6

Honestly mate, pointless tuning current engine.

Naturally aspirated engines, esp small ones, dont respond that well to tuning. You can spend a fortune, but it still wont be as fast as a Focus with a completely standard but bigger engine.

If you dont want to go properly balls out stripping the car and fitting light weight everything, save your money for a decent engine or a faster car.

1.6 is used in Fiesta ST cup, with ~160 hp. Much more than a standard 2.0 Zetec, just the ST170 had more...

But a tuned 2.0 should do more than 160 after all

Oh... I didn't see he's that young. 1.6 Focus is more than enough to end his young life on a tree along the road.

So I'd keep the 1.6, lower the car, buy a nice set of wheels and be proud of it. It's the much cheaper way, too...

fuzzy you got a point there mate.

In stead of trying to mod it, why not just drive it and get used to it?

To make decent improvements on the 1.6 focus youd have to spend a lot of money for a relitvly small gain.

plus when you look back in 5 or so years you will be soooo embarrased at what you think was a good idea. especially if you go down the spoiler and neon route (sorry but it sounds as if u may)

id say a 1.6 focus for a first time driver is more than quick enough to wrap around a tree with out a fart box exhaust and induction kit.

it will be hard to keep it standard, but belive it when i say you will be having the last laugh. rather than everyone else looking at you as a sterotypical "yoof" in a max powerd motor.

before you know it ull have some experience under your belt and will be able to affort a car more suiter to your requirements.

good luck, do go crashing it!!

less than a grand will take it from 100 to 150 bhp..........how is that not responding well to tuning

Get some nice wheels on it, lower it, get it polished up and looking mint and enjoy it.

No matter what you do, it will still not be a fire breather on a 1.6 lump in a large car. So make it handle well so that it is fun to drive and feels more like a go kart.
