Default Dutch Escort XR3i MK4 resto

Hi All,

After reading many topics on this site for about 3 yrs now + the fact that my MK4 saw some daylight a couple of weeks ago after about 8 months.. I've decided to start with a resto-topic for it. Although I haven't started restoring it yet, only ripped it in pieces

So, this is how it once started..

When I got my license, I've bought myself a white XR3i from '88 and I immediately loved the car, so gave it some S2 skirts and bonnet, RS1600i rims, an S2 recaro interior, Simons exhaust etc..

So then I had the stupid idea, to buy an RS2K with a 2.3, engine in it (which only did about 10K miles when the owner traded it for a Sierra Cosworth), for a lot of money

Had problems from the start, but the garage where I've bought it never solved it, so a year later the engine stopped running and that was it..

I've decided to replace the 2.3 with a standard 2.0 and needed a decent ride to get to work, so bought a Volvo 460 which I've crashed (not my fault) after a month, bought a rotten Escort MK2 and traded that a couple of months later for...

Almost standard, except for the skirts, rims and Sebring exhaust.
So I gave it a good clean, some white flashlights (?) and Cossie rims and it turned out to be a real nice car

Standard interior:

Just a nice pic:

Together with her younger sister, nice asses:

She also needed to work hard sometimes, but always without any problem:

So, the RS2K was up and running again, but I realised that I also got fed up with her, so I decided to use her as a daily driver and strip the XR3i down to give her a full resto.

So last spring/summer I've made a start

But I had to wait.. As I took out the headlights and the XR was taken by birds.

And they came out!!

Meanwhile bought some decent equipment..

Bit bigger jack..

First started to rip most of the interior out, 1st rust is immediately visible..

But it doesn't seem that bad, especially the front corners which I've seen very rotten before!!

When the birds left, I finally got the chance to rip out the engine

Then autumn came and I left her like that..

So, somewhere in January me and my uncle (mostly my uncle.. credits to him) made a pair of these:

And a week ago she finally moved to a bigger barn / garage where she will stay the next couple of months.

Then started to strip all the last shit of, doors, bootlid, everything out of the inside and the enginebay, so she was really stripped and then got her on her side..

So I could get more off..

And made a small start cleaning the underside of the car..

And yesterday I finally, after a week, had 2 hours to spent at her... So cleaned her a bit more.

And to give you a small indication about the rust, you've might noticed some......
I'm not quite sure whether to consider myself a lucky man or not.. who can tell

Battertray:

Hole under the fusebox:

Rightside is even better:

That will be a new backpanel:

And the bottom of the car, well, it'll need lots of replacement as you may have seen already.. I'll probably replace all 4 floorplates, doorsteps inside and outside, back innerarches and outer arches are very bad so also will need replacement.

Just used my thumb:

Innerarch at fuelhole (bad pic)..

First I'll enjoy myself cleaning for a while, grinder will have to do some overtime and I got myself a couple bags of sand for some sandblasting

Updates will follow sometimes

Cheers for now!

Cool, was checking PF and saw that James kicked my topic

Thanks for the replies ppz..

Unfortunately, haven't done much lately.. to busy with my job etc..

But, a small update.. instead of cleaning the bottom I've cutted a hole, also cool...

Well, at least 1 part of the car seems nice and clean haha

I also still have an RS as a daily driver, which needed some new brakepads.. So, new EBC greenstuffs where ordered to replace the old EBC's. They've been perfect for the job last couple of years, so I've ordered them again.

No pics of the replacing, so just a recent pic of my (ugly..) RS.

And I've spent some time to my other car.. Just a quick clean, as it was needed...

Almost mint Honda Prelude Mk1, I'm the 2nd owner... Registered in 1983 to some old aunt of my mum with about 63K miles on it.. Never knew her, but when she died, the cousin of my mum called me and asked if I like to have it as he needed to get rid of it.

Notice the original description of how the radio works, it's been hanging there for 25 years and still as new!!

But I'm still thinking about selling it and buy a rwd Escort Mk1 or 2.

Sorry for the small update of the XR3i, hope to start welding on that one soon.

Cheers!
