cool project
2 questions: 1st being over 20 years old, isn't the mkIII TuV exempt? Meaning you can basically do what you like? 2nd I see you used a 4x4 estate. The semi-trailing arms shock lowermount on an estate is very different to the lowermount Sapph/Hatch Sierra's. How have you solved that?

Hey Remko...
no... it doesn't matter how old a car is... every technical change on a car must be checked by the TÜV... Concerning the semi-trailing arm... I put in just for testing the complete axles, beams and stabilisators... and everything fits perfectly... At this point I can't tell you what should be different... Maybe, the 2WD ist diffirent to the 4WD... I took a 4WD estate... |

Thanx alot guys... I try to do my best... at this point, I stoped working on the shell... The front part is nearly ready for welding.
But the rear axle causes some problems... I already have a solution, but before I continue, I have to talk with my TÜV engeneer... Some major modifications are necessary... He will hopefully come next week, so meanwhile I will continue on putting the Sierra bonnet vents into the MK3 bonnet... This arrived today...

because of where the rear seat is in the escort the rear beam is firther back which makes the wheels sit further back

no... that's not the problem jacko...
The rear beam is quite wide... and I have to cut a little bit out of the sill (is it the right word???) From the technical side it's not a problem, but before I start to modify it, I have to talk with my TÜV engeneer... for those people, who didn't know what the German TÜV is, just have a look at the following link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TÜV Every part of the car, where I am going to weld, has to be discussed before with the engeneer... That's the only way to build up a road legal car... Last edited by Cyril Sneer; 08-04-2008 at 09:46 PM. |

Yeah Wenny.... That's what I thought also... to cut each end as much as possible and to notch a little bit the sill... BUT: as the sill also acts as a kind of longitudinal chassis beam, it must be discussed before... But I think it should be nor problem, as it is quite at the end of the sill... you know what I'm talking about Wenny

No difference between 4x4 and 2wd estates. Rear trailing arms are all the same on ALL estates. But they're different from Sapph/Hatch trailing arms because of the way the shock is fitted to the trailing arm. Compare this one to the one you used:
![]() You can see the shock mount all the way to the back unlike on an estate. The carriers are all the same so you can swap trailing arms easy enough.

ahh, ok... now I know what you mean...
Just the front part is from the estate... the rear axle is from the Saph, with the shocks fitted on the rear... so everything should work fine |

mine has the same cut out to so does daves s1 4x4 just didnt think that would be a problem but you lot have some funny laws you could always put a wrc rear in then you wouldnt even need to remove the rear boot floor at all

I think you've seen Werner - Beinhart
I think he will say: "Wolln sie mich verschaukeln?" first, then he will say: "Und das soll ich ihnen abnehmen?" and then: "Cosworth, Cosworth, so'n Humbug, hau'n sie ab mann!" and at last he might say: "Schluß jetzt mit dem Zirkus, verlassen sie augenblicklich das Gelände!!!" |

Professional work, a clean car, no problems with the standard things like brakes, lights etc. help a lot to legalize modifications. And being polite is always useful
Never had any big problems with the TÜV. But I'm looking forward to hear what they think of our trijekt injection |
