Default Ford Cortina MkV Crusader (Was YB) RB20 Restoration (UPDATE 17/03/13)

Right well here we go, I've always been into Ford saloons since I was younger, I'd always wanted a Sierra Cosworth which I bought and subsequently Restored over a 3-4 year peiod, If you get a moment have a look through this thread.

Black 2wd Sierra Cosworth Resto

It's also currently featured in this months Fast Ford issue 260.

Anyway, I've ALWAYS like Cortina MkV's so I started looking for one back in May and found this one on Autotrader, I agreed a price and handed over £600 for it with 12 months MOT and 6 months Tax, I drove it round COMPLETELY hassle free until september when I pulled it off the road for winter. Whilst it sat there I started planning what todo with it, I do like the car VERY much, it has a lovely feel to drive and certainly get's alot of looks. I decided that I would strip it down to it's bare bones and see if the shell that I think is quite good is as good as I think. I've not yet decided on the exterior route I want to take if it's a solid one, although I DO know what I want to do underneath with the drive train. Already being the owner of a Cosworth it's no surprise I have a spare engine lying around so this will be my power source, due to the car being quite light I don't think I should need much more than 400bhp to achieve everything I want from the car. Obviously 400bhp is quite a change to the car from standard so I know i'll be doing alot of strengthening and uprating parts, I'm lookoing to bin the rear axle in favour of a Volvo item with LSD although i'm not 100% which route togo down with mounting yet, I'm looking into 6 link. Anyway this will come later on.

I'm not sure whether to go for a sleeper look from the outside or whether to go stripped out monster look, (I do tend to favour the wolf in sheeps clothing route though) I'm sure you guys will give me some feedback good and bad, i'm also sure that there's plenty of people on here that can offer me good advice and help when needed.
:
Well here's how she looks as of today so take a long hard look as the transformation has begun!

Love it! A silver Crusader powered by a YB is one of the cars on my wish list/to-do list!

Hope you're going to keep it fairly standard looking?

Cheers lads,

Yeah I wanna keep it looking as much like a MkV Cortina as possible although I might have to make a couple of subtle mods to do what I want to with it.

nice one i love these cars ,these taught me to go sideways back in the 90`s we used to have a right laugh in them. back then though we was all on the dole so our quick power up grades were to drop 2.3`s in on a 1.6 running gear ,axles used to last 2 weeks but we had laugh while they worked

We have mk I & Mk II Granada's. Afterwards it's a Scorpio. In the UK our Mk I Scorpio is a Granada Mk III

Cheers for all the interest people, I hope it's as interesting as my last project to read through.

CosKev3 Cheeky fooker, glad you'll be watching this one aswell

Yeah she's gonna look standard outside but be far from it underneath, the reason i'm going YB as opposed to 24V is basically I have a spare YB! Plus I love Forced induction.

Ok,

Went outside today and started taking the old girl apart to see what sort of condition she's in after all these years. Well it felt like a piece of piss to strip down compared to how hard it was doing the Sapphire, I mean there's only like 12 wires in the loom!!! :clown: Once i'd pulled all the dash, seats, carpet and (RATHER DAMP) sound deadening material out it was time to have a look at what was lurking, I found the following.

Interior loom tucked up at the front, note the Blue doors!

Bottom of the 'A' pillar drivers side, note the bodge repair (A theme to be repeated)

Did someone say Bodge?? Check this out. Top of 'A' Pillar drivers side not alot left, but look how the front door is clinging on!

Looking up from the floor at the bottom of the bulkhead under the heater box, it's our friend BODGE again

Passenger footwell quite grubby

Passenger seat mountings rusting away, common thing???

Rear passenger area is VERY tidy actually.

Not the worst repair but nowhere near the greatest.

Wanna get the front wings off now and have a look under there, not to worried about the back as most will have to be cut out and fabricated for the new axle anyway.

How I left her, I'm sure my neighbours must probably think i'm getting into Bangers!

Well after returning from 6 months of Holiday repping courtesy of Thomsons it's back to the Cos-tina.

Been dragging my heels slightly with this one i'm afraid and not made much progress but rest assured it's still happening as I intended. I've stripped down my Donor YB at work and have found the reason it lost oil pressure. It picked up on number 3 big end bearing and spun it, rendering the Rod and end cap as scrap. I'm in the process of checking to see whether the crank has survived as have heard that they can warp VERY easily on the YB.

Anyway, picked the old girl herself up today and transported her to her new home during the restoration. My boss has kindly allowed me to store the Tina at work so that I can work on it in the workshop at weekends when bored. So here's a quick snap of her loaded up onto the truck and off to her new home for a while.

So she's now tucked up in her new home for a while. Will be having a look at making a start on the body this coming weekend.

As mentioned, i've been concentrating on the donor engine for the crusader. This being a spare YB I had from my Sierra. I've managed to strip it down completely now so thought i'd post some pics for you to have a good look at.

Well,

Did some work on the Cortina yesterday so thought i'd pop up a report. I'm still waiting for the block to come back from the engineers before I can start rebuilding the lump. Also my crank is 27thou bent so that has been sent away for straightening.

Then I decided to take the old engine, gearbox and prop out of the shell. Especially as i'm selling them! :P

Pretty empty engine bay now, not long and then when the better weather comes i'm gonna start on the bodywork.
Name: Cortinapics030.jpg
Views: 1680

i've also had the time to sit down and spec my engine for what I want it to be. The car is going to be used as a road legal, 1/4mile and track car so i'm not going stupid power from it. I've decided now that 360bhp is the figure i'm going to aim for as the car is VERY light anyway, no longer looking at the 400bhp figure I originally thought about.
