Default project for first car?

Hi im 16 and eagerly awaiting getting my first car. In the future i want to become a motorsport's technician so i need all the practice i can get so i was thinking buy a car cheap and in the few months until i drive fix it up to pass it's MOT and get it rolling whilest at the same time i'm learning about cars which should give me some experience for the future. My dad knows quite alot and i have a saturday job at a motorsports garage which deals mainly with fords so pretty much all the help i need is available. Obviously when i say cheap car one that main componants are in good working order such as engine gearbox etc. the smaller things i could do myself and build up as i progress with my career and driving ability. I am unsure though as which model to go for as a smaller engined car usually is cheaper to insure but as you progress as a driver people often complain of a lack of power so i need to find a balance between size of engine and insurance. If anyone could help me i would much appreciate it, either if you've done a similar thing or considering it that would be great. P.S i have about 1500 to spend altogether if that helps (not including insurance) just car and parts to get it running

i was having a look at puma as well or they expensive to insure? don't they do a 1.4 what's that like and would there be a big difference between a 1.4 and 1.7 insurance wise if it's your first car?
Oh and does anyone know of a website that allows you to see how much insurance roughly is going to be when you start driving if your im my position and 16 looking to buy a car. i need to roughly know to compare the options.

I'd guess most online companys strugle to give quotes out to 17/18 year olds ?

Just try imputting your details into something like confused.com but alter your year of birth until one of them quotes you happy
