1998 mk6 Escort track project
I've owned this car since 2003 and built it up to a fairly capable spec, with a 2.0L zetec, coilover suspension, Esc Cos brakes and a fully stripped interior.
It was "finished" in 2005 and looked like:
I took it off the road late 2005 when I lost my licence.... 6 points within 2 years. Licence returned Spring 2006, but my plans for the escort have escalated (don't they all ).
What started out as an engine rebuild with a few extra suspension mods, has turned into a full rebuild and resto, with a big spec engine and possibly some very fancy F2 / Maxi suspension!
Lightness is the key throughout this project, so it will use a N/A zetec, built by Giles at G-Sport in Northampton to the following spec:
2.0 mondeo block rebored to 2045cc.
2045cc Accralite Intruder Pistons, individually matched to each cylinder.
Compression Ratio in the region of 12:1 (standard is 10:1).
Forged Steel Farndon Rods.
Polished, balanced and crack tested crank.
ARP Conrod bolts.
ARP Flywheel bolts.
Focus Sport Underdrive pulley
Raceline lightweight alternator pulley
Raceline lightweight water pump pulley
Baffled sump, with custom oil return from breather setup.
Vibratechnics engine and gearbox mounts.
ST170 head
One piece stainless steel, sodium filled valves, standard size.
Modified inlet tract.
Oversize Solid lifters.
Double valve springs.
Titanium retainers
Piper cams with 308-degree duration (well into race spec).
Piper Lightweight vernier pulleys in black
Custom cam cover with 2nd breather outlet.
Custom breather setup - 1.5L tank with return to sump and 2 breather outlets.
Modified throttle body inlet manifold.
Jenvey 45mm throttle bodies, with 120mm trumpets.
Custom fuel rail from braided hosing and Aero-spec fittings.
Pico 490cc injectors
Pectel T2 engine management
Custom loom to position ECU in car.
Edge geared-down starter motor
Brise lightweight alternator
Focus alternator bracket to position at rear of engine
Dunnell 4-1 exhaust manifold
Haywood and Scott side exit (passenger side) exhaust system from the manifold back.
Finally, run in and mapped by Harvey Gibbs.
One part of the spec that is causing trouble is the flywheel and clutch.... but hopefully this will be resolved soon
I intend to use the iB5 gearbox, which is lighter and smaller than the MTX75.
Engine pics to date:
ST170 head
45mm Jenvey 'bodies with 120mm trumpets
Farndon rod
Pico injector
Accralite piston
Fuel rail
23% underdrive pulley, and weighs about a quarter of the std. item... I'll be completing the set with lightweight water pump and alternator pulleys.
New oil pump.... but I don't think the std. item will cope with the high revs (8000+)
Baffled sump
Engine progress currently being halted by the flywheel issue, so we can't get the bottom end balanced until that is sorted.
On the car, I've stripped it down externally to pretty much a bare shell and have been busy scraping underseal off..... NOT FUN
I'll post pics of the car at a later date
I've stopped myself from going into massive details and writing essays on each decision or problem... but will go into more depth as I complete each thing.
Hope you all like
