Series 1 Rs Turbo - B23 GTY
Hi everybody,
I’ve had my Escort S1 Rs Turbo for around 3 weeks now and to be honest with you I really didn’t think I’d get to finish it for the end of this summer especially with buying our new house? But after having a good week on the car, getting a few parts sourced and sorting out a bodyshop out I may see this summer after all?
Anyway thought I’d give you a little background knowledge into my new car. Some of you may know the car from way back in the 90’s!! Yes the 90’s!! It was last on the road back in 1998 and was owned by Darren Snow. He took the car off the road after a fantastic show career over previous years which totalled in well over 30 trophies including the Gold Cup. Unfortunately he never got round to getting the car back on the road and ended up selling it in pieces hoping that someone else could get round to doing it.
Due to fortunate circumstances the car ended up in my care. After reading through the cars history (lots of it! ha) I realised that I had a lot to live up to getting this car up to the standard that it deserves!! Maybe I’ve taken on more than I can chew?? We’ll see??
Anyway here are some pictures of the car when I got it back to my house a few weeks ago…….
I began by emptying the car out and rooting through all the parts I had and try to get to grips on what I had ahead of me……………….
The garage, house and loft are now full of S1 bits!! ha
I got to work under the bonnet…………….
Re-painted the block…….
Took the rad out to re-paint it and clean up the engine bay around where the rad sits…………
Nice and clean ready to bolt back together……………..
Also got a chance to sand down the rear calipers and give them a lick of paint………………
When I stripped the turbo off the car I also took the exhaust off. Looks like it will polish up well………..
I purchase a new fuel tank as I didn’t get one with the sale of the car. So primed it ready for a nice sliver coat……….(when I get round to it?)…
I got chance to nip down to Lightwater Valley to the Yorkshire RSOC Day. The plan was to work on the car all day but thanks to Shorty and StickerPaul and too much vodka red bull the night before in Liverpool, I ended up going to the show?? Cheers lads!! Ha
But thanks to the lads I had a quality day. Met Darren Snow (Snowie) who owned this car before me, and bought a few new bit………
I bought a new badge to replace the from grille badge that was on my S1 (Sorry Darren), I do like the Taz badge but I’m going for the original look….
Also thanks to Shorty I have a brand new concours Ford 3 spoke steering wheel………….
Back on the bodywork side of things I thought I’d save myself a bit of money by sanding down and priming the inside of the car ready for paint……..
That’s it for now, don’t thing I’ve done too bad in a week? Hopefully get the car to the bodyshop next week, while it’s in I’m going to source the rest of the parts that I need to get the car on the road. Got a trip up to Blackpool to Stu’s place to order some bits and then to Brakes International in Rochdale to pick up my new brake bits.
I’ll update in a week or so when it’s gone to the painters

Finally got my internet connection sorted after 6 weeks!!!
Anyway back to the rebuild. While at the Castle Combe RS show I purchased some brand new stainless steel braided fuel lines that go from the metering head to the injectors……………………….
So out with the old…………………………..
And in with the new…………………………
While the injectors were out I sent them off to be tested, hopefully they will come back ok and that will save me forking out for some new ones???
Also I started to put the new hoses on…………………………….
A brand new stainless steel bonnet stay………………………….
Coil pack in place…………………………….
Amal valve with posh powder coated plate……………………………..
New dizzy cap, distributor, dizzy cover in candy blue and new Magnecor blue ignition leads put in place ……………………………..
Intercooler was cleaned and put back where it belongs………………………
Also I noticed that the loom and the brake lines to the bias looked a bit poo, so I tried to neaten then up………

Had a spare few hours last night so I spent them wisely...................
I had to blank the top of the thermostat housing off so that the water return came from the swirl pot only..........................
Then i hooked up the swirl pot..................
There were some surface rust showing on the rocker cover..........
I stripped the rocker cover off to have a better chance of cleaning it......
I used WD40 and some wire wool but could get it off, so it will have to be sent away to be treated and re-chromed

Bit of an update on the escort……
I have packaged up my rocker cover and sent it off to Auto Specialists to be patched up and re-chromed. I also managed to get a few bit put on last night but had to shoot off as I went to order a new sofa for my house.
Polished up the alternator heat shield and put it back on………………….
Changed the old fuel filter for a brand new one………………………………
Here’s a picture of some buffty bits I got from National Day soon to be fitted…………………….
Going to have a bit of a slow build for the next month or so as I’m just moving in to my new house and I will be busy decorating, so I’ll try and get some work done when I can.
