Right the arches are all now fitted, so the moment of truth, how will it look with the bumpers fitted?

Well i'm 'quite' happy i've had to do a few minor alterations, first of all the point where the bumper meets the arch, I always thought this was gonna be the worst part of the kit, due to me having to manufacture it, and basically working from a blank paper...

So this is the Arch and bumper before...

As you can see it looks rough, so I trimmed it where it's marked, and also added another skin of filler on the bumper as I wasn't happy with th extension. You can see where i've marked the area I wanted to fill next to the clip...

A face on view, not far off?

The other side ain't 'so' bad, a small amount of filler to build it up and I think it'll be ok... Again I wanted to slightly fill out the extention, you can see the markings.

The Drivers side Rear i'm quite happy with...

The passenger side however, is another story No idea how I did it but I managed to get the arch about 10mm out...

so as you can see there is a bit of mismatch...

So thats how it looked before, so today has i've been mainly filling and rubbing down again, trying to get it looking a bit more like it's supposed too.

The front drivers side...

Rear drivers side...

And Passengers side rear first a layer of fiberfil to bring it out , then all filled and ready to be rubbed back down...

Not far off now... a few more days and i think it'll be ready to go to the bodyshop. I've spoken to my mate who's doing it and he'd prefer to give it the final prepwork, so once i'm happy with how it looks it'll be ready to go.

A few final things to decide upon such as the bonnet? Do I keep it as it is? Do I vent it? If I vent it do I go for cossy rep vents? or do I design my own? Bearing in mind that eventually I want to fit a Kevlar Bonnet, so what ever i do to this one it wont be on the car for ever.

Any thoughts?

Another day, another update...

So I decided to vent the bonnet, rather than going for the conventional replica vents be then Cossy RST or whatever, I decided to 'try and do them subtle, so, after playing about with various configurations I decided on this...

Then started to cut em out...

All cut out...

Cleaned up...

The pressed steel cut out and roughly in position...

Center...

Left...

Right...

And a couple of what it looks like...

After that it gets a bit pants, I decided to rivit the 'mesh' in, but to be honest it looks awfull as I cant recess the the rivets enough, so I have 2 options, to either try and spot weld the mesh in and then grind the weld down, with a quick skim of filler OR I can build the edge up around the actual vents with matting to hide the rivets and then blend them in with filler. I'm edging to the raised edge as I think I may melt the 'mesh' if I try to spot weld them...

Day off tomoro... so i'll have a good think about it. you'll see the results soon

We'll see mate, to be honest i'm not to bothered about the looks once it's done as chances are first time it's on track it'll have battle scars... It's just more farting about getting them to fit flush etc... if it was for show then maybe... but as it's 100% for track use...

Started with the filler today mate, I 'think' there gonna look ok, the idea is the entire bonnet will be painted including the mesh, so they hopefully wont stand out a mile.

Another small update...

As you will know if you've been following the saga, I riveted the mesh in place wish looked crap, so after thinking about it I decided to go with the filler option...

First we have the mesh rivited in...

As you can see it looks Gash, so I decided to attempt to hide the rivets, so first job was to slightly grind the rivets down and cut some matting to size...

The matting in place...

First layer of filler...

Rubbed back down...

And in the process layers of filler of flatting back down.

Quick coat of primer to see how it's lookin...

and finally wet n dry to take it back down ready for final prep.

Had a few issues with other parts as well, while playing about with the rear bumper I noticed that the cut out for the exhaust is completely in the wrong place, so thats next on the list of 'to do' jobs

Well I started on the bumper...

As the bumper on the car is a copy of the Escort Cosworth the hole for the exhaust is completely in the wrong place for the Mk5 Escort, so I marked out roughly where the Exhaust should be...

As you can see it's probably 4 or 5 inches out, so after a cuppa I decided the best option would be to cut out a new hole, and then 'try' and mirror image the reccess for the tow hook on the oposit side, again as it's on the Mk5 escort the tow hook sits under the bumper, so it'll have no use, chances are i'll cut the back out and mesh them both...

New hole cut out, along with a new section where the old bit will live. I've knocked up an alloy plate which will be rivited in place and a nice semi circle cut out.

A bit more trimming...

And the new bit sat in it's new home...

All trimmed up...

Matted in...

And the first coat if filler...

Thats it now till next week...
