Default Small update 3/7

Right just a small update, as I fukked up and got the wrong Gas, I aint been able to crack on with the welding, So I decided to reposition the Extinguisher, this it turned out, was easier said than done. I originally intended putting it behind the passenger seat, but like a prat, I didn't measure the size of the extinguisher prior to fitting the seat, the result being no room, so the next plan was to fit it up under the dash on the bulkhead, but after a bit of investigation, I couldn't find a suitable position due to there being a double skin.

So the final location ended up being on the trans tunnel, I fabricated a mounting plate using checkplate and a couple of exhaust bobbins.

Then ran the pull wires upto the extinguisher, one from inside the cabin and one outside. And mounted them to the floor.

All mounted up with the wires in place and the lines for the nozzels.

Mounting straps in place to stop the extinguisher flying off in the case of a crash.

I'll not go into geat deal with the fabrication of the foot plate, but basically I made a cardboard template, and then transfered that to some checkplate. It's then mounted to the floor using 2 alloy brackets, and held in place by 2 further brackets mounted from the left rear (a handy bracket already there) and top right, (a mouting point for the glove box)...

Also refited the battery box.

Once all that was in place I tested the footplate to make sure it'd take the weight.

While lookin at it, I decided that I didn't like the big hole where the glove box was, I intend fitting the ECU there so I thought it would be a good idea to put a cover over it... So out came the cardboard again. Resulting in this...

And everything in place...

Needs a bit of tidying but quite happy with it.

Right as you may have seen, in my 'eventful day post' i've started on the Maxi again...

If you've been following the thread you will know that welding is not my strong point, married with the fact i'm curently using a gasless welder, it's taking alot of time... this is due to me blowing big holes in the metal when I hit a thin bit, and generaly the weld being... dirty!! I've found the best way to make it look neat is to over weld it ( I doubt that's a profesional term) and the grind it back down, it's not pretty but it's solid, but i'm going to overlay it with glass fibre matting anyway so it's no major!!

Anyway pics >>

This is the passenger side...

This is where I got upto before I had my "Accident"

As I say it's not pretty, but it's solid...

This is where I found a thin section and blew a big hole in the metal...

A couple of the inner arch finished...

And another of the top.

The next few are the drivers side...

Completed...

Inner arch...

Top...

The final 3 are work in progress shots before the first 2 pics...

Hopefully there will be some regular updates now, as i'm just doing the odd hour here and there...

Another Small update, finished the passenger side arch...

Then a quick try to make sure the arches still fit...

Passenger side...

Drivers side...

It would appear that i may have been a bit enthusiastic when nocking the arch into shape, but nothing some matting a filler can sort...

Next on the list is to start fabricating the arch extensions on the rear Bumper...

Had a couple of hours free this afternoon, so I made a start on the rear Bumper...

First, the section that I originally cut off the arch, placed roughly on the bumper...

As you can see, as with the front it has to be built up...

Initial template made with cardboard...

If you squint, you get a rough idea of what it'll look like...

It'd be a bit boring going thru the phases of laying the matting, so here is the final layer...

And a couple, with the arch cut back off...

Now the hard work starts...

Right here we go again...

Managed to get the other side of the bumper done today. Not going into quite as much detail, but basically same proccess as the other side.

Arch removed...

Bumper removed off the car, and staring to strengthen the new arches.

And cleaned up, to start laying the fibremat on...

more to follow soon.

Another couple of hours today...

Building the arches up on the bumper, first laying some matting...

And the other side...

I then trimmed the matting back and laid the first coat of fibre filler on...

Hopefully get that sanded down in the near future, so I can start shapeing them up better.

Been back in the garage today so i'm cracking on with the arches...

First of all I preped the original bodywork to fit the arches by laying a layer of fibre matting, Doubt this is how the pro's would do it, but I thought it would give the arches something to stick too...

I then rivited the wings to the arches, I first put a thin layer of fiberfill where the leading edge of the arch meets the metal so when the arch is tight on the wing it fills the gap...

Starting to rub down the first layer...

And then layed the second layer of fiberfil...

Thats it for now... Need to get some more fiberfill.

More to follow soon.

A few more hours today...

Flattend the fibrefil down...

and gave em a coat of filler...

Front arch is flatted back off. So then just to guage how much more work I need to do with the filler, I gave the front arch a quick coat of primmer...

Thats it for now, I'll probably just crack on for a few days without pics, you can only take so many of the same thing...

So hopefully the next instalment will see the arches all done
