Red Escort Cosworth winter freshen up*updated sat 24 mar *
Hello All
Thought i'd share my little winter project with you all . I last drove the car at the beginning of November last year and had decided well before then that i was going to change and improve a few things for the new forthcoming year of shows. I knew what i wanted to do and knew it wouldnt be easy as the car lives outside so would take some time as this countrys weather is so unpredictable (like today ). I have attended many many ford shows for years now and have always slobbered and drooled over other peoples Escort cossies and decided to try and join these people now with mine. Having owned the car for almost 18 months now i felt that it was the next step..........A full engine bay overhaul!!!
with lots of shiny bits and one or two one off fancy bits. I really want to acheive a neat tidy and clean but not over the top engine bay.
Apologies for bluriness in some of the pics, my camera has changed its settings by itself and i cant get it right again
The car started November looking like this
I wanted to really neated the inlet side, this was taken november before i started
Then i ripped it to bits leaving it like this
Over the winter months ive brought lots of bits from the car home for cleaning, all the hoses etc, amongst loads of other bits too.
I knew that i wanted a lot of chrome so set about prepping lots of the cast parts for the best finish possible. the Inlet plenum cover took 10 hours of flattening and fettling so would be near perfect when chromed, i had some funny looks of people at work when i'd got blisters on my hands
the final item was well worth all the effort
the turbo was also to be chromed so again was flattened and polished up ready for some of the shiny treatment
before
I have always used a red bull can somewhere in my cars, so again wanted to use it on my escort especially as the red and blue on the can would compliment my car. I decided to incorporate it by using the iscv.So i made a template
Then using a craft knife placed this over the can and cut it really carefully to shape. Then stuck this on using bodyline double sided tape. I also hand painted the ford logo on this with the finest paint brush youve ever seen!!!!
Im happy with the final result it may not be too everybodys taste but its a bit different and i like it
Wanted to then try and improve the fuel lines a bit. My original fuel rail was matt black so stripped that and found it was polished underneath I had bought some braided fuel line from the Donington spares day last year and set about trying to make it fit the rail. This isnt easy as the existing black pipe is well stuck on the rail, so heated it up and it came off. Then i decide to try and use the existing plastic pipes that run inside the protective outer pipe and replace this outer pipe with the new braided pipe i had got. I took my time with this as it involved cutting away the outer pipe without cutting through the precious inner pipe............guess what, i failed
I tried really hard but still cut through. The hunt was on for a new damaged fuel line. This is where MATCOS helped me massively and thanks to him the car can now run again as he had been offered one recently by an RSOC member, a few PMs later the new rail was mine, but what a costly schoolboy error only wanted one pipe but had to buy the whole rail.
Anyway after a few weeks of work the rail now looks like this, just one of the connectors to re-attach tomorrow
To match the blue hose finishers on the fuel lines i thought id get some fancy p-clips and hose seperators to match. So a trip to Demon Tweeks last weekend lightened me of yet more £££ but theyre top quality and should look great against the lines and chromed plenum
I had in mind a quite trick idea with a piece of carbon cam cover that i had left over. When it arrived the full one didnt fit so i had to cut it which gave me the idea of using it in this way..... I made this
From this part of it
What do you think????? I love it!! havent seen one of these before
About 4 weeks ago i took all my bits and bobs to the chromers and on Friday picked them all up.... Mint Lots of bolts, bits, brackets etc, as well as all my Bailey tanks.
So yesterday i started the big re-assemble. I thought i'd start down the turbo side as this was the easier of the 2 sides.
The Bay has been cleaned up as much as i can, the block, head, chassis legs, innerwings, etc etc have all been cleaned or polished.
Heres how it was yesterday morning before i started
Car with Turbo and mirror image tank on, Actuator bracket and actuator.
Turbo side almost finished, just a few pipes to reconnect, and started spitting with rain at this point
Soon after this it Peed down so heres how i left the car, first rain its seen uncovered since November
Anyway im off work next week to get this car put back together and get running again..... got lots to do including fitting these
Also got new window caps to do
New centre dials to fit (thanks Paul Ripley )
Oil and filter & Plugs.
And lots and lots of other stuff that i'll keep updated. Cant wait to get it done then give it a good polishing and get some final pics up on here.
Thanks
Martin

These pics really dont do Martins car any justice. The car is truely mint, one of the best condition and looked after Escos i have ever seen. The attention to detail is just amazing!

Update time And thanks for all the posts
P.S. Banhambuilt: No problem Dave
Bit windy today so got done what i could!!! Decided to start down the inlet side so polished up all of the inner wing again first then started to put bits back.
The inlet manifold damper, EDIS mounting bracket and power steering tank were first back on
Then started to put the inlet manifold on. Using all cometic gaskets down this side which are top class
Tightened all that up then put the inlet plenum on which looks great in place!!! also put the wiring loom on the inlet using some of the new blue p-clips which im pleased with too
The throttle body was next. This has had a full overhaul too, been painted silver and i had the throttle springs chromed along with the 4 bolts that attach it to the inlet plenum. Its so rewarding when you see it all going back!!!
Then the iscv that id played with went on and really looks great when fitted!
Finally fitted the header tank and some of the water hoses. Thats it for today, roll on tomorrow
