Black S2 ZetecTurbo - Mapped! Friday 6th June
Hi,
Here we go people, I've been a member since impulse buying a 'tidy'... Black S2 back in Aug 2005. Since then I think I've only done a 1000 miles in it. With what I've learnt off you guys over the past year I wouldn't have bought it but I'd always wanted an escort turbo/it was black/it was local/and Red16 was getting stuck into his 1600i which is why I got the Ford bug. Anyway here is what it looked like back then along side my other toy.
I'm starting this thread from peer pressure from my mate Red16 to get my arse into gear and have the escort sorted for the summer. I respect the concourse lads for the time and effort they put into their cars, this project however won't be to that standard but hopefully interesting for you's keeping track of my progress.
Not long after I'd bought it we got a random spell of rain for a day or two, after which I noticed the carpets were damp. Being a bit concerned about my new buy I pulled the carpets back to find the usual rot.
Put it straight into the bodyshop to get this sorted out as I had some spare cash at the time.
I was also putting posts up on here as I was going to make the usual mods i.e suspension/turbo etc and make it personal.
However.... the rot fairy wasn't finished with me yet.
Right, another week or two of mildly tuned RS driving until I decided to have a real look at what I'd bought. My gran has a pit in her garage so I took it round for a full inspection.
A view of my new playground as an RS owner
Pics of the real RS I'd bought
I was thinking at the time that there seemed to be alot of underseal on everything, but the bits were coming off to be upgraded anyway... not a problem
Then I started prodding
Hole in the chassis rail
Fuel pump cradle disintergrating, check out my genuine ford tie wraps
Inner wing packed with bloody paper and bodge..
I'd started now and was on a mission so the rear interior came out.......
Boot floor on top of the chassis rails
then finally the strut top How the hell does a strut rot there???
I drove home that night, went to bed and I may have shed a tear. My tidy escort was nothing more than a recently sprayed field dwelling rot box.
I woke up the next day and searched the autotrader for a new motor. At the time my cousin had a 172 and after driving it I thought I'd fancy a bit of that. New, clean with more bhp than the rs and no rot. I'd come to the conclusion that the RS was now a major project, even if I'd just wanted to get some decent cash back as there can't be many idiots out there dumb enough to buy what I had.
The winter was coming and the bike had to go so I managed to part ex it aginst this and was driving around in it within the week.
And the escort was then put to bed in the garage for what turned out to be 14mths
Goodnight
2007 Motivation
I've decided this is going to be one of the best years of my life, i went away with the lads skiing, went to amsterdam and got engaged to the missus.... before you's start she's not a window lady and I wasn't stoned. I did the romantic thing and took her over for the diamonds..... right back to the important stuff. I've sorted my flat, got a magaluf stag holiday booked and will be going away with the missus later on. The only thing to spend my money on now is the RS which has hung over me like a bad smell for months. Not to mention the grief I've got for taking up space over the pit.
Inspiration
Red16 is driving around in a 350+ bhp evo and another mate is modding the shit out of a GTIR. I know I can't compete but giving them a run for there money with 2wd should be fun. Let the games begin....
Going to finish this post before I accidently delete the lot
Cheers
Dan

Striptease
Before it all kicked off I had to make a trip for some equipment
Then I attacked it, we were battling for hours but I think I came off best The worst exhaust to be removed ever!!! Had to grind through it as it was all one piece, wtf, and I couldn't get the rubbers off.
Suspension and brakes. The rear wishbones were only good for the skip.
Now came the fun bit. I'm known for not getting stuck in and getting dirty but I was quite proud of my efforts.
Underseal off
All with the help of my little friend, the wire brush attachment.
I've now got a housefull of brakes, suspension and full interior. Working my way through it. Derusting, polishing, painting and buying new goodies.
I've even managed to sweet talk Abby into cleaning the bits while she's watching the tv, I knew there was a reason I proposed!!
Pretty much upto date now, I'll should be posting on here regularly now as the postman keeps knocking me out of bed with parcels of bits.
Cheers for reading, comments welcome

wahey the resto thread begins i didnt think the RS would ever see the light of day again
i'd forgot how much you had cleaned underneath the car! the rusty sections look bad but once theyve been trimmed back the car will look instantly better, John'll have the graft done in next to no time once its dragged round his bodyshop
be finished before you know it, the weeks/months are flying by now, summers nearly here which means working outside on the car is much more appealing.
You gonna let the boys n girls in on the plans for your engine spec?
and Gaz's stag do is gonna fuckin rock

The car is an 88 F plate with 90spec interior and spoiler. The plate was a 21st pressie, D4N RF is my name and initials, its a shame my surname doesn't start with an S i.e 'D4N RS'. Might treat it to a facelift if I can get a tidy 90spec bumper, the ones I've seen for sale have all had clips missing or been cracked.
Anyhoo off to paint and take pictures... its getting addictive.
Cheers

Today,
I'd bought a fiesta engine a few months ago, stripped it and then stuck it in my mam's shed. Today I went round to pick it up.
This is my computer room now though where I'm sitting typing this post.
Some pics of the stuff thats arriving daily Thanks to Christian, quick service.
Springs that will sit on my koni dampers
And a new clutch. The car will be a daily driver so no paddle here.
I bought these a while ago before I'd decided on the spec I wanted. These will go in to get it running but are the weak link in my plans.
I've done a bit of graft today too, I'd prepped a set of ebay rear calipers and sprayed one of them.
I'm not happy with the results and my fairy soft fingers won't take much more derusting abuse so a different approach was required.
I popped into the place where I'd done my works experience 12years ago on the off chance he still had his blasting machine...... he has and I can use it whenever I lke. Bloke.
Filled my boot with rusty parts and when I post later on they should be shiney metal.
Off to blast

Blasting and painting,
Have been busy again today, i'll start getting a name for myself with the lads if I keep this up. I'm a self confessed crap painter so if you spot a run don't mock.
Leave off with the zetec pressure . I'm staying cvh
Blasted the rust off most my bits, should be the last push tomorrow.
Got some new garden windchimes at the moment
And the other bits are stuck in stuff so the paint doesn't get smeared... I'm getting too fussy.
The rest will be done tomorrow.
Cheers

my old car, sold it when I got my first cossie.
I did a bit of work on it but it wasn't as bad as some. had a few owners but was pampered by about 5 members of the south yorks rsoc for quite a few years.
how it used to look

Small world!!
When I bought it in 2005 I asked on here if anyone knew the car but didn't get a reply.
Have you got any stories about it then?? I don't want to know if you've had someone on the backseat tho

it was offered to me back in 1997 when I was looking for my first rst but was out of my price range. got passed about between the lads in sheffield & doncaster for quite some time 1 in particular spent loads on it, ie brakes suspension etc. when i had it needed 1 of the rear chassis rails repairing, a seat mount & rear brake pipes iirc. Never let me down once in the year i had it. those willwood brakes were a bastard to bleed hadn't been touched for about 5 years & all the bleed nipples were rounded . the guy I sold it to asked me a month later if I wanted it back cos it kept breaking down, turns out he had fitted some stereo gear & put a screw through the fuel pump feed wire
back seat had been used a little i was single at the time

that exhaust you've cut through is a very expensive tube torque one.
was tailor made on the car & should have cost Mr Fernside about Ł900 but their boss was on holiday that day & the 2 fitters pocked about Ł400

Expensive or not, it hung like a bag of shite underneath the car and it wasn't stopping on. Bought a Magnex system for it instead.
It's there in two pieces if anyone wants to buy it.
FOR SALE:Ł900 worth of Tube Torque Exhaust with reciept.... in 2 pieces though and needs welding back up. Offers welcome
I'm in two minds whether to keep the Wilwoods, I'm busy refurbishing the cossie rears I have so don't mind stripping them down. Its whether or not I can still get the seals if they're goosed as they are 10years old.
I'd noticed the botched fuel pump wiring. Nugget. That was another reason it got laid up, the car kept cutting out because of the pump connectors were shot. Had to crawl under the car twice when it was raining and fiddle with them. Rust issues + running problems = buy a new motor, which I did.
Its all coming together pretty quick now... fingers crossed.
Hopefully you and others on here will be impressed with my resto and want to buy it one day like all of the well known cars.
Cheers

Update: 3rd day running!
Just a bit more prepping and painting of parts.
Fresh from blasting
2 shakes of a tin and a splash of paint later...... tadaaa
I know I've commited the sin of painting the rubbers but I didn't want to take them out incase I split them.
A rear brake caliper, now ripe for fitting the disc conversion.
I'm having problems with the other caliper. It was the first one and I thought it would be a good idea to remove the internals i.e spring. I got them out fine but now I cant compress the spring and fit the retaining clip at the same time. Any ideas? There is bound to be some specialised tool that I need costing a fortune but how do I do it with a xmas cracker set of tools??
Just the tie rods remaining.
I think I'm coming down with something.... I found myself cleaning this when it got too dark to paint!!
The term Bufty gets thrown around on here, is it a contagious disease that afflicts the weak??
Cheers

A little piece of christmas everyday....
Got this this morning, Ford Water Pump.
Off to work soon, should of been there this morning but had a sneeky lie in. The seals for my calipers have come too but getting the piston back in as well as fitting the seal is proving a challenge.
Thanks for the comments so far,
Dan
