Default restoration on s2 help with roof rot

hi im new to this forum i ave been following many of the s2 restorations and am amazed of the time and money that has gone into them. i have owned mine for 5 months and is coming of the road for restoration at the end of the month, but i am having trouble about the roof it has bubble rust by the sunroof and has a hole the size of a small pin head on the roof aswell does any 1 no how to repair and how? and is worth repairing?

difficult to repair, welding usually warps it

well yes, but saved for how long is the question. You can remove the paint so that you can see all the rust. If it is small pinholes of rust, these can be poked out then small dots of weld put in there place...but very slow to keep heat down. then grind the welds down, fill and re paint....

there is alot of it but as it is now there is only 1 hole but will need to c how bad the rest of it is wts the best way to do this as i wont to be very careful cheers for ur help

the main reason i wont to do her is she alredy the battery tray and bulkhead done and i dnt wont to waste a rs shell

cheers 4 that gee1599 that has help shed somelight on the situation well i hope she worth it shes had all the battery tray and bulkhead done but she comes of the road tuesday so the strip down will commence hopefully wen i remove the bodykit and carpet there wont be anymore horrors cheers for all the help guys keep it coming

Not to make your day any worst but u wait until you get underneath mate

The body kit hides multitude of sins

But keep your head up when you get behind the kit it broke my heart when i took mine off.

Spent 5.5k on a mint turbo thinking it would be all good

i paid 1000 with no mot and all it needed was a track rod end and ive ad it on the road 4 5 months wt she needs so far is a rear new panel or cud plate ive got two doors 4 her now plus im gonna put on a new cross member and frontpanel and two wings does it sound like she to far gone ?
but ive still got the worse bit to come

New roof needed. It has gone in the framework behind the skin. If you need any proof, remove a door aperture seal, gently lower the rooflining on one side by the door and look inside. There will be rust all round the join between the roofskin and the sunroof frame.

Both sides were like this on my old XR3i (H-reg).

Before


Hole dug out and ground back


Refilling using lead-loading after welding the holes.


Smoothed down


Fully repainted in a paint booth the same day all over the roof panel, came back within six months. And you can't say that was a bodge-job either.

so filling cutting out and plating wont solve it i cnt belive that came bk in 6 months. does any 1 no if u cn buy new roofs or do u ave to make a second hand 1 fit

looks like it the person doin that must ave some skill to do that i aint capable of doin wt that person done. is it possible to buy new roof skins and does any1 no a place or person that cn fit them 4 cash

that was just fitting the roof skin im in the middle of doing mine at the moment if i new now how much work it is i would of done a reshell but i cut the roof of a mint 1.3 bonus should of used the hole car

really it that much hassel is it easier to reshell the car cus it wud be a shame to waste a rs shell, do u ave any pics of ur roof in progess cheers

all i have done so far is cut the roof off the bonus driled out all the spot welds to remove the roof skin the rs is going to a mates bodyshop to remove my roof and fit the new one cos i dont have the bollocks to cut my car up i will get him to take pics and post them up for you

p.s my roof is in worse condition than yours but like you i have done front wings slam panel both rear arches and back panel batt tray and fuse box so i have to do it

Well if you want to say i "bodged" it,then so be it..But i had the same prob when i did my S2 rebuild....

And i kid you not,i thought about it,and i used Radiator sealent from B&Q!!!!!!!!

Water tight,dont let rot form,do the maths!!!

Fuckin worked though...

Saw the car a few years later,and not rot AT ALL!!

Well,it worked for me,just get some radiator sealer..DA off the rot (it will go in to holes) then slap it it,and rub it down...
