Default My Renault 5 update 21/6/08

Sorry guys that it isn't a ford but thought I would put up progress of my first car - a renault 5! (I can hear use laughing frome here lol) Its only a 1.4 non turbo but I am only 16. Anyway heres the pics-

todays progress-

the plan is to strip it right down to a bare shell and respray it all (inside outside underneath arches etc) and powdercoat all the suspension components. Keeping the outside fairly subtle just delocking it and smoothing a few things then lowering it 60 mm on a set of black 15s. Engine plans are bike carbs and lots of chrome hope yous like.

Got the dash out today (what a b@stard that was) and also got the door cards out (also a b@astard as someone decided to stick them on with half inch thick sealer) got some of the wiring loom out too and also removed the battery to check the battery tray for rust (all is mint ) and removed all clips from the interior. Tommorow looking to get the bumpers off and make a frame to bolt to the car so it can be turned on its side. Will get pics up later.

update
realised its not really worth doing the bike carbs as im only keeping this engine for 2 years cos i can get insurance on a turbo when im 19. Got a few bargains tho a brand new never fitted GTT front bumper, a standard front bumper and a rear bumper also 2 clutches lol got for the price of a bottle of whisky also on a more deppressing note - found out i need to weld the inner wing cos ive found a hole and another where the rear bumper attaches. Will get pics up on sat.

Personally, as its so solid, id GTT that rather than sell it on.

GTT rear beam and so on just bolts on no problems.

Its the same C1J engine etc, just different internals.

Even the waterpump and most the bloody pipes are the same.

Seen the newest performance GTI mag? Got a Raider on the cover.

Has two awesome GTTs in it, the aformentioned raider thats full of carbon and is the bollocks, and an equally cool and mega subtle silver one with a fuel injection conversion

Renault 5's are a favourite of mine, especially after my one of my best mates bought a Raider a few years ago and he's VERY power hungry so it was RAPID

If i could offer you one tip when you turbo it, make sure its EFI, the amount of headgaskets he put on his was ridiculous, the 1.7 Turbo volvo engine would be

Have fun when you lower it aswell that rear axle looks like its going to be fun to pull the torsion beams out of

Keep up the good work

Whats EFI got to do with blowing head gaskets?
Fuck all.
Blowing head gaskets is due to the car not being tuned right, makes no difference if its carb or injection.

Personally on a GTT id stick with a carb, the money and trouble to go to EFI makes it not worth it, just use somebody that actually has a clue how to tune carbs.

the fact that on the standard carb its extremely difficult to get it to fuel well on high boost and pass a basic emissions test. He was running over 20psi of boost........................

Calm down dear!

And if you source the 1.7 volvo engine with loom it drops straight in as its the same basic construction as the 1.7 GTX lump, with the added benefits of being OHC crossflowetc etc not a primitive pushrod engine......

Calm down? Disagreeing dont make someone not calm dude

Its not hard if done right, my last one was running 23psi held and was rich still at the top end, yet still passed emissions easily, as did mates that was holding 25psi, and jocks that used to run 33psi on a carb, and he ran soo many satandard parts it was wierd how that thing held together for even 2secs

Carbs are basic is one sense, but if you know what you doing you will be just fine.
Unless you got fully mappable managment (ie not the standard 1.7 turbo shite) you cant do much anyhow.

What benefits has a OHC engine got? Technically its safer to rev due to no pushrods to bend, but that isnt an issue with the engine so barring 300cc more, there no real advantage.

Its no co-incidence all the fastest ones are still using the C1J lump!

Hmmmmmm well admittedly he did a lot of his carb work himself and i think as hes learnt now you can't do this sort of thing at home, without the right equipment especially when its carbs!!

I do agree with you on the push rods engines actually there is no belts to snap, the main benefit really being that the bigger engine would be crossflow. Renault 5 engines are quite incredible being that they are so old yet they achieve so much power and can be quite reliable, head gaskets were his downfall but that was as a result of running lean.

Anyway we better stop clogging this thread up now

Add me on msn if you like, chances are i know you anyway
