Default zetec'd mk2 fiesta - MAJOR progress this week.day 2 - 28/08

right, bit bored so thought id start a thread about my xr. bought it last september, was totally std appart from a very lightly ported head, piper cam and bigger carb.

during the following three months it went from that to running a 1640cc lightend + balanced bottom end, stg 3 big valve head, D+G disks and uprated pads, avo coilovers and a couple of other bits.

come december i was pished off with fuel consumption a 400bhp cossie would be proud of, so decided to go zetec. started off with a 105 spec lump from an orion, before i fitted it i treated it to 2.0 throttle body, AFM and cams to bring the power up a bit. did the loom, engine mount and moddified a magnex 4 branch manifold for it, used a fiasco centre tank and erst pump.

few pics of manifold and engine mount:

got the xr2 rad with mix and match hoses. went well for a while with only a few hicups. during this time it had a set of new gaz coilies, new shocks on the back with spax springs, adjustable panard rod, new bushes etc etc and a set of RS7s from an S1.

feb time i woke up to a nice suprise...pikey wankers had tried to steal it failed and decided it strip it of anything they could!

as you can imagine i was fucking FUMING . they had the battery, chopped through the loom to get the ecu away so that was fucked, they stole a few engine part, they knackered the dash, had the stereo etc etc away, aswell as CDs and a load of stuff i had in the car. all in all not shy of a grand worth of damage/stuff nicked. but it gave me an excuse to get it off the road and sort a few bits. while it was off the road i put a new loom in, ecu, ERST gearbox, ERST clutch, new engine mounts and a few other bits. also finished stripping it out and got my recaros in!

got it on the road a couple of weeks ago and it looks somethign like this at the mo:

gotta love the cable ties

today i just picked up a new engine

2.0 mondy lump, done 34k, and is fooking mint! gave it a quick rub down with some thinners on a rag and its come up loverly, inside the rocker cover is even cleaner! did get the loom and ecu with it but i cant be arsed to chop about yet another loom for it to run on th 2.0 management so im gonna get some megasquirt ordered next week when i get paid. was gonna run it on megasquirt when i put my throttle bodies on but decided to do it now. speaking of which, i got these off ebay a couple of months ago, waiting for the fuel rail to be welded, need to extend the linkage a bit and manifold be made and they can go on. theyre off a kawasaki of some description, 38mm throttles, should be just the job!

spaced out 36mm:

ignore the copper bits, was gonna have a copper rail soldered then chromed but going for an ally one now!

hopefully will have a few updates the next few weeks of the 2.0 in on the megasquirt, then the old 1.8 head is getting ported and polished, and will go on before or with the throttle bodies. aiming for well over 170bhp with the head work and throttle bodies on the megasquirt! should be lively!

you dont NEED to chop the loom about at all really, the engine loom in the esocrts is totally self contained and just plugs into the car loom with one 8 pin plug. if you get a loom from a scrapper, chop that plug off with a few inches of wire and solder it into your cars loom. can just plug the engine loom in and out of the car no hassle then. if you look in the general section for a thread made by luke89 ive just posted the list of which wires do what, and what they need to be connected to!

like i said, you dont need to chop it about, i didnt the first time when i did the conversion, but when i replaced the loom i chopped out all the emissions control shit you dont need in an older car, the diagnostic ports, shortend alot of wires that were miles to long (AFM, lambda etc etc) and then wrapped it all in with the car loom so it looks factory. all only because im a fussy twat with wiring, you dont really need to bother! can have a loom in and ready to go inside an hour.

cheers for the nice comments guys!

got a few new bits recently. mate off another forum sorted me with some new shocks for the back to replace the gash Gmax ones. *cough*shit*cough*. also got some gauges off him, only tim, nowt flashy but will do the trick. got busy today fitting them into the plastic mk1 dash i got off the same forum and ended up like this:

chopped the bottom of the dash off, took the steel bracing out from inside and all the venting shite out as havent got a heater. blanked the vent holes off with some ally sheet. bit of glue got squashed through to the outside though so need to slice that out with a blade and itll look alright then. weighs about the same as a wet fag paper which is good too!

also, at the EFE show i went to in holland this weekend i picked up a brand new genuine ford cossie clutch plate for all of 30 euros! bargain i thought till a mate told me he got one from the same place but at a UK show a few years back for a tenner :blub: still a bargain though. offered it upto the 2.0 flywheel and fits perfect so should work well. just gotta get my hands on a good condition cossie clutch cover and ill be away. might have to redrill the flywheel but no big deal really.

also, not really very exciting but got a new rocker, gonna give it a lick of satin black to get shot of the logos and it should look sweet as.

tomorow i plan to get busy putting the bootlid on a diet. gonna take all the wiper shite off, then chop the frame out so its just a skin, then weld a small brace from the lock to the barrel so i can keep the normal lock. might get some perspex aswell if i get time!

also been thinking about a new colour scheme but cant make my mind up....

If you can get a 1.8 Zetec flywheel as they are lighter. Have you changed the water pump to a 1.8 one? If not do it, or your water will flow the wrong way round.

Keep up the good work, nice to see some one doing it properly for a change!!

1.8 flywheel is to small for the clutch, and yeah i know all about needing to change the water pump, you also have to chance the sump and oil pickup as the pan is the wrong side for the exhuast.

not much progress lately really, been either at work or pissing money down the drain on the lash gotta get myself sorted

well theres been a major change of plans, as the old xr2 was a bit rusty in paces and i wanted lots of stuff doing on it to make it mint, when a cheap shell came up locally i went and had a look and ended up buying it!

its miles cleaner than the xr2 was, plus none sunroof, plus its a 1.1 shell so lighter! and i got it for Ł50!! bargain!

ripped it appart this weekend, everything inside appart from steering column, handbrake and gearstick has been binned, the pedals will be going next as ive got th xr2 pedal box to go in! spent last night and today getting those shity tar sound deadening pads off and cleaning all the shit they leave behind, hard work and took ages but worth it. with everythign out if had a proper look at the floors and its not shy off what id call mint! theres a small plate in the boot floor where they always go, and one under the pedals again, where they always go. the one under the pedals needs tidying up and stuff but other than those bits its mint. theres lots of excess seam sealer and shit in the pics which looks like rust but dont be mislead! will eb getting all that up with a wire brush when i come to stitch weld it.

ive put the S1 rst 7spokes on it from the xr2 and im not sure, tempted to get some steelies banded to about 7" and use them instead. dunno yet though. off back upto cumbria tomorow so cant do anymore, was hoping to have the old engine out but will have to wait till xmas now.

in other news, got my mate to knock up a few bits and pieces for the throttle bodies so shouldnt be long before thats all sorted and i can start building the engine up.

allows me to fit an xr2 servo and master cylinder with no hassle, and also, the pedal has the hole in a different place to alter the ratio slightly!

well my/the cars xmas prezzie arrived today, one wizards of nos nitrous kit! shall be swapping my single injector and a wedge of my hard earned for a dirrect port kit from a mate of a chips so i can run it with the throttle bodies. going to start off with 50 jets to begin with probably, then when the cars to the stage i want it suspension wise and im happy it can take it, will be buying a minimax controller and upping the jets slightly.

few mates came down yesterday and gave me a hand getting the old 1.1 lump out! probably didnt get it done any quicker as we were all falling over each other trying to get at different nuts and bolts a one point i think all of us needed the same spanner

got the brake bar and servo/master cylinder off aswell, and ripped the battery tray out (litterally ) was quite pleased to find the inner wing under the battery tray was totally solid (appart from where i drilled through when drilling the spot welds )

this morning i got up early at set about stripping they seams back for stitch welding, battled with the steering rack for a good 20 mins trying to get the fooker off, and the same with the wiper motor, im guessing everything on this car is original and never been appart, so 18 years worth of seizing made it a bit of an arseache. got it all stripped bare and the seams all cleaned of sealer and paint, took the struts and tiebars/lower arms off and started on the wheel arches, got most of that done along with the chassis rails but it began to rain so called it a day. made good progress though, and really suprised how many seams there are hidden under the underseal in the wheel arches! :blub: gonna take me ages to weld em all! also planning to do the cross member on the floor inside, down the sill/floor join, around the rear wheel arches inside and out, and the boot floor, if i can be arsed i may do more - but i doubt it

got no pics of the bay stripped down but will get some when the weldings done or whatever, heres a couple of the battery tray anyway if anyones bothered

also won a brand new, genuine ford xr2 radiator on ebay for Ł28 posted! should be here tomorow bargain!

right well managed to get the car in the garage the other week, after months of nagging the stepdad lol. got all the seams stripped down and clean up, and the engine bay is now fully stitch welded. not as bad i was expecting, quite satisfying, but REALLY pissed off that most of the welds you cant see, the welds are fucking BEAUTIFUL, but most of the ones you can see, the welder wasnt having any and are gash nevermind! gonna seal them all anyway so probably wont make much difference.

heres a few pics:

welds you cant see:

welds you CAN see:

im tempted to grind em off and do em again now ive got the welder working well....we'll see.

in other news, sorted a 'large workshop' in bridgewater, some of you may have seen it before will be able to get the car in there next week hopefully, will give me masses more space to get aroudn the car, and im really tempted to give it a coat of paint as ive gotta do the engine bay, inside and the new fibre glass bonnet and boot (when i get em lol).

its getting there anyway! feel like im actually making some useful progress now!
