220 GSI Turbo - New engine build up. 14/11 T28 Upgrade
A project from Ebay.
Thought i'd do a little sort of resto thread.
Bought for peanuts as a non runner. Has upper end issues I thought I'd spring some life into her as generally the body work is near mint.
Chappy had said the head was done BUT had not been timed up as he didnt know how. I did invest some time and slap on the CAM belt and she run but not to well and there were aspects I was not happy about. IE oil leaks. Blowing exhaust manifold etc. I thought as this was meant to have had a replaced head. Its obviously been bodged so I would take of the head and check it my self.
So here we begin.
The car.
My DIY bolt organiser
The head
Dont appear to hot here.
Or here. Concerned about this
And a general head shot
SO plan.
Take for skim/pressure test before I carry on. Just to ensure head is ok.
Clean up ports. Valves and reseal.
Refit with new gaskets/seals
refit.

Still got my 216GTi, had it for the last 7 years, these are good motors.
Prefer the Honda engined ones though, I fitted a Jackson Racing Supercharger to mine - was quality.
Good luck with it mate!

Great cars mate, I used to have one rapid cars when moving
One thing though, just make sure if you've had the roof out that you make sure 100% they're fastened in properly! I didn't and both pieces of glass did a James bond ejector seat stylee launch while I was overtaking someone Good job there wasn't anyone behind 'cos they're heavy fookers!!
Got an official Rover workshop manual here you can have if you want too mate for the cost of postage (takes up a full lever arch file!)

Wahay!! I've lost my Virginity!!
secret passionford rover coupe crew...
ive got a 220 turbo coupe as well, similar issues as your one but in the end it needed a head gasket.
i bought it off a friend, to do up and sell on, he got the arse with it the only time its ever played up and bought a audi tt (which by the way is much slower).
i drove it for a while realised its mostly honda design underneath gearbox suspension ect and though result: fast cheap b road fun honda'ish and kept it.
then a set of mg wheels came up cheap then an stainless steel exhaust was planning a rebuild aiming at 275-300ish bhp, if i dont change cars ive had it for three years and st170's have really come down in price. so might have to come back to ford 100%
anyway, have a look on rovertech.net and rover-coupe.com if you need any parts or advice if you havent come across these sites already.
regards
cris

The Old
The New
Test Fitment
Loom changes for the difference in connector ends
All enclosed and nasties hidden
New Loom complete
Original clocks in due to mine being a speedo cable rather than sensor and mine have 155mph clocks not 130
Without boring you dash complete picks

Pics of water pump housing rebuild. Not much I know. But every bolt sheared off when replacing the water pump. Grr. Not nice getting them out. Couldnt be drilled as would have been a knightmare with ally casing and hardened bolts. NOTHING WD40 couldnt sort. Some new bolts and some trusty copper slip.
New pump
Holes nice and lubed up
The housing
Sneaky preview of head
Sprused up block.
THE MESS
Now these pistons have done 140K. Block has no lip Only look wet as have just sprayed WD on them to stop rusting while head off.

check all the way round the bore for a lip, its about 5mm below the dark line and normally only on one side of the bore, the front if the engine rotates forward generally,
like the dash tho, makes it look much more modern

One of my engineers a couple of years back did a T series tune...
Standard bottom end and head
Piper reprofiled cams (with verniers)
Tubular manifold
Cossie 60 Trim T3 with 0.48 housing
Standard Ecu with original map
Standard injectors
Adjustable fuel reg.
2.75" exhaust
EvoVI intercooler
298bhp at only 13psi of boost....
No torque though, take for ever to wind up, but then go into hyperspeed...

rover coupe
looking good mate.dont want to murray walker it but hope it all goes well!
i put MG wheels and smoked repeaters on mine it somehow makes the car look alot more up to date, it could do with a mk3 dash though how long did it take to fit the dash in your coupe?
