Default PROJECT MARSHALL:- Track day / DRIFT cossie updated 18NOV`07

I finally collected my new project car yesterday after weeks of excitment.

I originally was in looking for an engine to replace the one in my tatty old road going 2wd moonstone sapphire which had water in the sump

when I came upon a post by RichardPON, I had been following his thread that had been documenting his build of a trackday Cossie and he posted up that he would have to break it for parts before completion . I was initially interested in the engine he had for sale but realised that what I wanted out of my road going cossie would be expensive, I wanted a 6point+roll cage, strut braces front and rear, Gp A engine mounts to stop the block moving so much, to ditch the ABS and fit a hydraulic handbrake and strip the interior out too. I was better off buying the shell PON had for sale... so thats just what I did and on Sunday 12th Feb`06 I collected the bare rolling shell from him.

Thats the livery it wore in its last events before PON bought it, see his restoration thread.

I plan on transfering everything over from my above road car with a fresh engine in and using it on track for a bit, and learning to DRIFT, I realise steering angle will be an issue but I have things I want to try with that. I havent decided on a final spec as yet, budget will be a major factor here, no 10" ZOO diffs and monster suspo packages for a while, I just need to drive it then see what I want to change. Im sick of my cossie being off the road
Watch this thread for updates and I hope to be somewhere near finished by the end of 2006 We will see.

Nice to see someone else going for a drift Sierra I'm also sorting my 3door as a drift/track car and also on a tight budget
I hope to put together some cheap adjustable suspension, pics when i get sorted.

Yeah I have such i tight budget that Im already overspent
It can be done though so off to make a list of parts I need from my road car, I need to get Brom@Zoo to fabricate a couple of solid mounted brackets for the gearbox to convert it fron 4x4 to fit a T5, and to mount a road 7.5" to a 9" mount on the car.
Let me know how you get on with yours "robrs2".

Quick update, only managed to white spirit, T-cut and polish the new shell last weekend so now I know what Im working with, not too bad considering, could do with a lick of paint but the body shop is dicking me about so Probably end up building it up now before it gets cosmetics done.

I did get more parts off of the donor vehicle Sunday though, freshly Reconned T5 gearbox was removed along with the 355mm 6pot front brakes, these will both see it onto "Marshall".
I also got the rear beam freed up and dropped from AOO but ran out of time to get it out and stripped, that will have to wait another couple of weeks yet as I only get half a day sunday working on the two cars due to work committments, JOY

AOO looking like an off roader
Next job is to spend more money, sort some coilovers so I can get the car rolling properly, fit the brakes+ lines and wheels. I also have an engine that leaks water to the sump that needs a new crank too ŁŁŁ Still, the project has only just begun, going to be a fun year I can tell

G228 will be gone next month though as I stripped the beam last weekend, boxed the slipping 3.62 diff and driveshafts up ready for marshall and refitted the beam so its rolling again. The beam was really heavy, I could barely lift it myself the diff weighs sooo much it surprised me, so I got my DAD to help along too

Only the leather interior, clocks and alloys to be removed and then its ready to go I will miss it, Ive had some fun in that car, but it does mean I get to build a car that I really want, less of a compromise
I am mostly shopping at the mometn when Im not working to pay for it all, Im currently on the lookout for a set of coilovers to get the new shell rolling and a decent supplyer of strong bolts for the rebuild, then its out with Marshalls rear beam and start building that up with what parts I have so far. I cant wait to get started now.

A quick update, Ive mostly been collecting parts for the build and deciding on spec. I have managed to mock up a diff mount from 6mm ply though that will fit the new shell, using rough measurements from the two shells I ended up with this

Not a bad guess, I was 5mm out on the M12 mounting stud holes which left the diff mounting face 5mm short and the base plate is 10mm bigger out the back than it needs to be but it will do the job, I just need somebody to knock this up in 6mm steel for me at a decent price ŁŁŁ ???

The donor vehicle AOO is stripped of almost everything I need now and ready for its new owner Ive had fun with that car, its been expensive but real good fun.

I have finally managed to find a cheap set of working coilovers to get the shell rolling again,

they looked in OK condition but I gave them a good going over with a wire brush and GT85 to free it all up and they a bit better, will certainly do for now. Old for new;

I swapped the front shocks over at the weekend and decided the front hubs had seen better days and was quite concerned at the state of the bolts holding it all together so for piece of mind I have souced a fine assortment of new bolts for the chassis in 12.9 tensile flavour

There will be a few more of them thats for sure, lots to do and parts I want to find but no rush, I have 12months before I need it to be ready

I have also had the diff conversion bracket made up so I can fit a 7.5" road diff to my 9" GpA motorsport diff mounting studs, looks just as I wanted it and as soon as I can get the rear beam sorted and built then it will be fitted along with my freshly modded 3.6ratio 3way MIG spec diff I have had made up

Priority now is to get the shell water tight as it still has no roof vent covers and the sticky tape is leaking water into the footwell, JOY and to get it moved to a more convenient location as where it is now was only meant to be temporay but it has overstayed its welcome by about 6 months . I can hopefully spend more time on it at its new place just up the road.

I was going to fit my solid top mounts to the Avos as I had them off but ran out of time, and with plans to increase front track so I can increase steering angle, it means I may use an adjustable top mount instead, plans are still in the air and nothing is final yet, really need to decide a spec when I have got some miles on it and can identify any weaknesses.

So I fitted the standard steering rack with poo rubber bushes and poly bushed std front TCAs for now, also my road 17" wheels and rubber top mounted Avos.
I ended up with this poor poor steering angle
much modding to be done.
RichardPONs wheels were returned to him along with the borrowed front shocks I had on to get the shell home (A big thanks to RichardPON ) and a deposit has been put on a suitable engine for the shell.

So Ive not been lazy, far from it, still finding the parts I need and want and getting a little bit done here and there where time allows, next job: move the shell to its new home for a while

Looks like a good project.

I like seeing people's hard earn'd time as well as big budget stuff. As im on a budget i can get on board with the engineering of mods.

Are you doing away with the bushes completely in the diff mount?

Quick update on the project, work on Marshall was postponed this year after deciding that a house wa smore important and the right one came up earlier than we anticipated so here is our new home

Complete with a partitioned garage full of crap from the previous owners The rear of the garage was previously a sound studio and the walls were filled with saw dust of all things so took ages to take down and clear up TUT. John "TEV" off here gave us a day clearing out this lot to the tip, cheers mate owe you some work on TEV

Ive since got Marshall towed to its new home, a BIG THANKYOU to Darren and Ben at Spoox motorsport in Enderby Leicester who do the servicing on our 106 and towed the shell to our house before Christmas, Thankyou again guys and to Ed for not moaning too much about the shell being at his house for 10 months

Yes Ive done away the any rubber on the rear, the beam is solid mounted on welded cups at its front side mounts and the rear is now attached to the custom solid steel mounting bracket, Ive tried it for size and... its 30mm out, not 1 or 2 but 30mm out!!!! Why? because the 9" diff mounting studs dont sit centre to the shell and I didnt have the diff and shell in the same place to measure up so I had to muller the existing bracket with a drill, trial and error so it fitted, it may need remaking at a later date ŁŁŁ but will do for now to get it up and running.

The new 3way MIG spec diff is ready and has been trial fitted, a quick call to Dan@Rapidford saw one of thes winging its way to me, a pleasure dealing with Dan and Natalie

just needs sealing and filling, new bolts are on order for the drive shafts and rear shocks, then its on with ordering the long studs and nuts if anybody knows where I can get a set for a decent price?? I will get on with the hub bearings then as they feel notchy to say the leasy.

The Racing Puma rally car seats were trial fitted to see what I need, they look pretty good and grip spot on, I was originally looking for Cobra Imola2s but for the price, no grumbles here, 6point harnesses were a must in Ti too.

neither the std sliding frame or side mounts fit straight on to the rails fitted to the shell and the upper side bolsters foul the cage when slid back on the passenger side, the drivers will be OK as I want the wheel close but the seat sits far too high at the minute so I want it lower.

I got half a day on the car yesterday so got on with rebuilding the beam, got the drive shafts re-greased and fitted to the diff and diff sealed and ready for installing

Also got the N/S rear Avo on and hub rebuilt and fitted, I trial fitted the rear AP disks and 4pots, these should do nicely

then got it all back together to wheel him back in, not a bad days work though it took 8hrs to get just that done mostly because of the crap on everything from the donor car, just 3more corners to do then

Cheers J happy blasting mate.

I got another unexpected day on the car Tues so fitted the O/S rear AVO and re fitted the now cleaned up and re greased hub above, disk and caliper, still need to swap disks round and nipples on the calipers for bleeding then the diff can go up. The bolts were changed on the front struts and front calipers and disks fitted, then dicked around for half hour cleaning underbody threads and sorting bolts out for the ARB (note to self, you cant fit the front ARB while front end is in the air TWAT )

I put together some hoses after finding the ones I had with the calipers were a different thread to those fitted to the rest of the car so made a trip down to see Andy at GGR Performance. Thanks Andy for your help getting the hose ends I needed . Next I checked the front brake lines for fit and routing, pretty good and made up the front caliper lines, will follow it through to the rear next weekend when I get time.
Hoses being made up:

and in situ:

The unbody heat film hadnt stuck at all well and was flapping in places already, its going to annoy me so will be re done or at least removed while I fit the gearbox, next up...Diff and shafts to fit...
