2wd 11 Second Saff
Hi Guys,
Thought you may like some pics/vid of my Saff all the way from Australia.
So far it has run an 11.82 @ 124Mph for the 1/4 mile on street tires and pump fuel.
Below is a video of the 11sec 1/4 mile run.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the compliments guy, I really appreciate it cos if any one is going to know there cossie's it going to be you lot and I will throw another shrimp on the BBQ.
The Intake manifold was hand fabricated by a friend of mine Jim Cowden. I think he is also a member of this forum having a user name of Jim_C so if you have an interest in purchasing one you could PM him if you wish. Jim also made my Exh manifold (see pic).
For those interested my engine mods are; Ported Cyl Head, custom over sized valves, Isky double valve springs, custom spec cams, Int and Exh manifolds, AirTech bar and plate cooler, 3” custom Exh system, GT28 ball bearing turbo, Autronic SMC ecu with an Autronic R500 CDI firing 4 individual coils and I have an Autronic Dash display.
As a matter of interest for me as I’m so far away from you guys, is my 11.8 @ 124mph a good Ľ mile time compared to what similar modified 2wd cars run over there ???? I’m very happy with the performance considering it’s a T28 framed turbo.

Lovely looking engine bay mate, and judging by the times set it certainly does the business!
I was suprised it's on a GT28, most of the Cossie's over here now are moving towards GT35/40!
What suspension and tyre packages do you run, excellent time with a good terminal!

Dan,
It’s funny that you asked about the suspension cos a few nights ago I was talking via email to a Guy called Mike Rainbird and he was asking similar questions about the rear beam in the car. I must be missing something here cos I didn’t know that there is a mod that can be done to the rear beam to aid traction? If anyone knows please tell.
Getting back to it, the only suspension mods are SPAX springs and standard shocks. I am looking into buying some Koni shocks soon. The tires I raced on were bfgoodrich 205/40/17 street tires.
Regarding the turbo sizes, Mark Shead is a good friend of mine and has told me of the larger spec turbos you guys are running. He had told me of Rod Tarrys Saff as an example. To be honest my car is a genuine streeter and I really don’t want the turbo lag that comes with such large turbos. I know that I will be sacrificing top end power but I’m happy to do that for the excellent response of the smaller turbo and that’s why I went with the T28. Here are a few pics of my T28 vs my old “Hi Flowed” T3 and some pics from the drag meeting too.
Lamb chops,
I tuned my Autronic on a “Dyno Dynamics Dyno” (I think you guys call it a rolling road) and when I ran those times I had an honest 364Hp to the rear wheels. In Australia they claim a 30% loss so in “theory” its approx 473Hp to the flywheel ! I don’t claim this as I don’t really know. That’s why I’m a true believer of the Ľ mile cos when the flag drops the bull$%it stops.

Thanks again guys . Unfortunately I don’t have any vids/pics of the Grp A touring cossies. Sorry .
My cousin actually bought an engine out of the old Benson and Hedges #10 car off one of the Grp A teams back in 1990 and fitted it to his RS2000. I have been for a drive in it and I have to say it’s very very laggy. Full boost (it was 23psi when I went in it) comes on at just after 6000rpm but it really comes on hard. On an honest 23psi it ran 10.6 @ 132 mph down the quarter mile with slicks fitted.
My understanding of the engine spec is a pair of (Int & Exh) BD16 cams (Australian spec, may be different to UK spec, I don’t know) 7.0 to 1 comp, massively ported head, obviously the T4 turbo/8 injector Int manifold and Motec ecu not to mention other things that I have not mentioned/forgotten/don’t know like upgraded valve springs etc etc. In race trim I was told by Glenn Seaton who raced the “Peter Jackson” Sierra that they would run 30psi during the race and spin the engines to 7500rpm, bear in mind the race would usually be 7-8 hours long.
I personally think there awesomely tuff little engines and absolutely love em

That really is an awesome time for such a simple car, very good BHP, but with very limited suspension mods i'm so suprised it ran an 11sec pass, you must have hooked the launch up perfectly and driven really well!
Mike Rainbird would be able to supply you with a complete replacement rear beam, I should imagine it would be to 'Grp A' spec mate! Awesome!
Wicked car!

Dan,
Yes, the cars suspension is very simple with very little mods. It’s really all about the engine and this is proven by the MPH it ran on a T28 turbo.
As for the launch, I have a micro switch on the shifter that drops the boost to 15psi (actuator pressure) when in first gear. Once into second gear it enables the boost controller (HKS) and the boost increases. If you listen to the vid carefully you will hear that I actually back off and then get back on the throttle. What happened was I left the line at 6000rpm and the car turned the tires hard, I kept into it for a second or so then backed off totally and then got back into it. By totally getting of the throttle the rpm’s fell to 3800rpm (looked at Autronic’s Data logs) and the car gained traction so i put my foot back into it again and simply revved out as per normal but with 15psi in first gear.
I want to fit some Hossier 225/50/15 “street slicks”. I have seen them in the flesh and basically there a very very soft compound tire that has two grooves around the diameter. Id say more slick then street tire but hey that’s what I want. I’m pretty certain IF the Hossiers live up to there expectation and I can leave the line with 25psi then I hope/think I should be able to run 11.3 to 11.4 @ 125-126mph.
Once I have the funds to buy a pair of Hossiers I will be racing again. I can’t wait

awsome car my friend...
We know an australian cossie tuner in Greece... Vince Rigolli
he race prepped an RS500 engine which currently is used in a tubed frame Ford Capri drag car...
he even came in Greece for a couple of races and he drove the car in Malta once to achieve a 9 seconds flat...
Now the car is a proper 8 second car...
Do u use the launch mode that your autronic has? with drag radials i am sure u can go really low 11s even high 10s...

Kouzman,
Yes i know of the Rigolli's. Those 1/4 mile times are awesome .
No I'm not using the Autronic launch control. My method is simply a micro switch that turns on/off the HKS boost controller when I'm in first gear.
To be honest I'm very happy with the 1/4 times so far and to be able to run a low 11 would be mad considering I'm running a T28. Driving on the street the cars awesome as it has very little lag with the T28 and thats what i really wanted as it is a true street car

mate your time is amazing...
many people won't believe it, but you proved that a well built street car can achieve such times...
get those slicks quick mate
we wanna see times...

Sounds very simple mate, yet so effective!
If you get those tyres and run with another 10lb boost off the line I would think you'll be into the high 10's with a bloody good terminal!

Kouzman,
I knew that people were going to find it hard to believe the times, that’s why I had a friend video it. I will also have him video the runs when I race with the street slicks. I have had many local people not believe the times simply because there own cars (Nissan 200SX) can’t run the same times with the same spec turbo
I simply tell them to come to the drags and watch or if there up for it, to line up and have some fun. Its funny how there friends always show up to watch and obviously there straight onto there phones as soon as I have had a run.
Dan,
High 10’s would be mad, but to be honest I think it will be in the low 11’s at best. I have an “in car” video of the 11 second pass but its 50Mb in size because I had the camera running while I was still in the staging lanes . Most of the footage is simply waiting in line. I am waiting for a friend to edit it to the juicy bit (the run) so I can put a link on here for you guys to see
Kev H,
The fuel I use is Shell Optimax. Shell claims it has an octane rating of 98.
Filthy Rich,
Yes it definitely is something different here in Australia as you don’t see too many of them. Nice Saff you have in the pic. What is a “6 Deg beam” ????

6 degree beam is a Ahmed converted beam that's adjustable for Toe in/out and camber +/- 6 degrees
Maybe the best thing i've done to the car?? I'll let you know when my new engine's ran in and mapped but the beam is a great bit of kit
