Only last 5 minutes can't listen to those clowns any longer unfortunately. They criticise anything that involves rawness and actual driving.

Its a proper car.

The only reason the merc won the votes off the public is cause of the badge. Badge snobbery lol.

I'm a huge ford fan and think I'd take the merc as well on this occasion I'm afraid but the new Rs does seem to be a great car!

I often see one of those mercs near my work, sounds like a really wet fart at high revs. The new type r's are everywhere round here as I am near the Honda plant so all the workers get them lol.

I hate the dash on the mercs. To me it looks like someone has stuck a ipad on the dash.

I think no matter what vehicles you like someone out there will always disagree. It's all personal opinion. I suppose I'm lucky in that I like all makes of cars pretty much

I've detailed most of them, not driven any of them (other than in and out the unit) and the RS3, A45 and FRS all excite me the most, not in that order

Ther is no doubt that a merc at twice the price is better quality. My old 90k Amg e55 was immense but there is fun to be had in the lower priced seats too

The interior on the focus is horrific - I'd take the Merc, or any of the German cars over it for the money.

Have you owned a Merc Glenn. You are talking a different class of car. You are so blinkered on the Ford badge nothing else exists. The RS is a fine car but its not the best against all other cars.

I would love the RS for what it is and what it does for the money. If I wanted a luxury car then I would go Audi, BMW or Merc.

After owning an AMG I would opt for the RS as the sporty saloon. My AMG seemed to be fighting performance vs luxury.

I've got to agree with Glenn.

I know a lot of people who will buy a car because of the badge! I'm talking Porsches, Mercs, Audi's and Bimmers and they have all had terrible trouble with them and they have all been new or nearly new.

You've also got to remember that the AMG Merc is Ł10k more than the RS, and that is a massive amount of money!

Default New Rs road test vs its rivals

My friends dad has a new c class, it's got loads of gadgets but keeps going wrong. It's been recovered twice because it wouldn't start too. Something like a merc or a bm these days means nothing, they are the same shite underneath. All you are buying is a more expensive dash board!

Over the last 2 years my dad has had 2 jag 2 mercs a Audi and he has just sold a volvo. Out of all the cars he had i liked his Jag XF. He had a c class merc coupe. I thought the dash was shit looking and imo it drove no better than the wifes shitter focus.

Ive been in the motortrade since 1995 and ive worked on a lot of cars and also drove them. So i know a good car when i see one.

If mercedes got rid of the vtech kids tablet stuck to the dash and put a manual gearbox in it then I'd have gone for one.

Happy with my RS after 103 miles now

The Merc does well in these tests because it's a fucking missile, not because it's got a Mercedes badge on it.

I'm not into the styling myself but all of these 4WD super hatches are bloody brilliant in their own way. I don't think it would be a bad decision to have any one of them over another.

All down to personal preference, thats why i got the RS3 over the anything else. The Merc has a horrible dash and rides hard for everyday driving. Im sure i got told some exhaust sounds come though the speakers too... Cant be having fake sounds.

The Focus I'm sure is a weapon and lovely to drive but again for me its the dash and also the outside, not just saying that for the RS its since they changed to the MK 3. Don't like any new fords now even the Fiesta MK 7 is horrible looking.

Im sure over the Merc forum they are all hating on the Focus.

I know over the Audi forum there has been talk of the Focus and Merc, it seems like the Focus has a lot of good talk.

Personal preferences...

Doesn't your Audi do synthesised sounds? My Golf does. The RS does too actually.

I just like the fact Ford are getting praised for making a cracking car. Plus the fact the focus rs is a good price and alot cheaper than its rivals.

See in my opinion the Golf r just looks like a normal golf apart from a bigger set of wheels and 4 exhaust pipes.

Does the Audi A3 have the same floor pan/suspension as the golf R?

Im not slating the cars im just having a bit of crack about cars.

I quite like the fact that my Golf is subtle, means people don't expect it, and I don't have to be embarrassed driving about in something Halfords spec

Golf and Audi use similar underpinnings but different engines and different settings so very different cars really.

Im 99.99% sure the RS3 does not synthesise sounds from the speakers. Ive even asked on the Audi forum to get confirmation

Does the Focus RS do this too then?

I would be disappointed if i found out mine did it or any car i would consider buying did this. Just find it a cheating way to make you feel like it sounds better than it actually does!

How do you know your golf does it? Can you hear it when the radio is off?

I'd think the RS uses the symposer that brings sound down a tube through the bulkhead, like the STs have, not sure about the other models. Either way they're daft.

Just been back on the other forum and everyone is saying the RS3 does NOT do this but S3/Golf R/A45 AMG/CLA AMG and M2 all do this and by the sounds of it (no punt intended) the Focus does it too!

Not putting any of them down just why do this in the first place!

The facelift ST doesn't use the tube, the sound comes through the stereo instead I believe.

No idea but it's quite commonplace now. The M5/M6 also do it and I think the latest RS Clio might as well.

I've got to say, the sound inside is probably the worst thing about the Golf. With the windows down it sounds ok as you can hear the turbo spool up and you get some nice pops on up-shifts but the sound symposer thing does sound a bit weird.

It's just the way of things these days. It will only get more and more common I'm sure.
