The facelift ST doesn't use the tube, the sound comes through the stereo instead I believe.
No idea but it's quite commonplace now. The M5/M6 also do it and I think the latest RS Clio might as well.
I've got to say, the sound inside is probably the worst thing about the Golf. With the windows down it sounds ok as you can hear the turbo spool up and you get some nice pops on up-shifts but the sound symposer thing does sound a bit weird.
It's just the way of things these days. It will only get more and more common I'm sure.

Some of the high end vehicles have double glazing.
No wonder they have to duct the sound of the engine.
As long as it's real sound and not artificial electrickery I am happy.
