You have to start with a good composition - what is the subject and point of the picture?

If that is not clear to you when taking the picture, it won't come across to the viewer.

Last weekend I went to the track for the first time this year, for a drift trackday. Freezing cold and pretty overcast, but it dried out in the afternoon, so managed to get a few shots of tyre smoke!

Shared this in my cadwell post in this section but put in here to add a few words regarding the photography side.
Not been to a trackday in years with work and family etc but decided early this year that I was to attend the time attack day. Thinking ahead I hired a Nikon 200-400 f4 lens for the day to go on my d700 as my 70-200VR is a bit short on full frame. Didn't realise how much of a beast the lens was!! Didn't realise the 4.8k price tag either and at 3.3kg it gets heavy handholding it all day. After an hour I felt like Id got the hang of it and started turning my mind to composition etc. This is my favourite from the day shot at 1/100 which with the VR on was a very easy to use speed that gave action and also a high keep rate.
DSC_6588 by Stephen Cresswell, on Flickr
Id never spend this much money on glass but using it was a pleasure. Its rekindled my love of the slr so hopefully get out more this year. Always wanted an impressive star trail pic combined with a cityscape so that's my next little 'project'.
keep the pics coming

Cracking shot StephenC!

Popped down to Canada Heights a couple of weeks ago for the third round of the British Motocross Championship. Such a great place to spectate (and take pictures) as there are no high fences anywhere. Few pictures I'm pleased with:

Husqvarna MX1 (17) (Alfie Smith) by Steve White, on Flickr

Husqvarna MX2 (153) (James Harrison) by Steve White, on Flickr

Honda MX1 (704) (Ashley Wilde) & Suzuki MX1 (5) (Graeme Irwin) by Steve White, on Flickr

Was at Brands Hatch last weekend for the Blancpain Sprint series, hopefully will have some shots from there to add to the thread: need to sort them out first though!

the quality is pretty good (sharpness), but you're right that the composition is very amateurish with the subject always dead centre. the light in them all is very flat as well, have you just taken the jpg straight out of the camera? i would strongly advise shooting RAW and developing in somethign like lightroom to make a huge difference to the lighting levels, colour saturation etc.

Yeah Jpeg straight from the camera. I've watched a few vids on YouTube about shooting RAW, maybe that's something I could consider along with using lightroom. Practice is the main thing, only really use my camera every couple of months or so but would love to use it more often.

Any recommendations for shooting through glass? Going to Twycross Zoo on Sunday and about 80% of the animals are behind windows.

Regards,

Dan.

you can use a polariser to cut the glare, but it will also cut the light going into the lens which will already be low. putting your lens right against the glass can help so that light doesn't go in between.

i can't say that photographing animals through glass is my thing.

Cheers. That's my fave shot from the day, worth getting a face full of gravel for!

Lambo is a nice pan Steve. Might be my phone but I'd boost exposure a lil bit on the gtr, looks like the camera has put the white as middle grey.

Ha, funny you should say that, as the GT-R colour keeps throwing me! I actually thought the car was white until we saw it on the day, the colour in the photo is actually right: its the car that's the problem! It was sort of an off white, like there was a hint of blue or grey in it.

All the bits that I know were white (rumble strip, roof of the GT-R and the BMW in the background) look OK, so I left the picture as it is when I uploaded it.

Where is everyone? I can't be the only person who has used a camera in the last month!

Checked out some National speedway at the tail end of May...

Speedway Bike (Kent Kings) (4) (Danny Ayres) by Steve White, on Flickr

Speedway Bike (Kings Lynn) (3) (Scott Campos) by Steve White, on Flickr

Speedway Bike (Kent Kings) (2) (Danno Verge) by Steve White, on Flickr

...then popped to Brands Hatch for American Speedfest at the start of the June...

Ford Mustang by Steve White, on Flickr

Surtees TS11 (34) (Greg Thornton) by Steve White, on Flickr

...and again for Tunerfest last weekend.

Lotus Exige (25) (Thomas Everill) by Steve White, on Flickr

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII (7) (Andy Demetriou) by Steve White, on Flickr

Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution III (44) (Simon Griffiths) by Steve White, on Flickr

Brands is great for spectating, but I find it hard to shoot there: they have put high fence on pretty much every corner now.

Few more shots to keep the thread alive.

Fords from all generations on the Festival of Speed rally stage.

Ford Fiesta R5+ (36) (Stephen Petch/Rob Gill) by Steve White, on Flickr

Ford Focus WRC (44) (David Wright) by Steve White, on Flickr

Ford Escort Mk.1 RS1600 (93) (Steve Rimmer/James Rimmer/Dai Llewellin) by Steve White, on Flickr

In my personal opinion the rally stage is the best bit of the Festival of Speed, it always amazes me how many people who go to the FoS don't bother with it. Unfortunately I was only at the FoS for one day this year and, as there is so much to see, I didn't use the camera much. Would really like to have shot from more spots on the rally stage, but I didn't have time to hang around!

Couple of shots from the BSB at Brands Hatch...

Yamaha YZF-R1 (25) (Josh Brookes) by Steve White, on Flickr

BMW S1000RR (60) (Peter Hickman) by Steve White, on Flickr

...and some more from Brands Hatch, this time the British GT Championship:

Porsche 911 GT4 (49) (Graham Coomes/Jake Hill) by Steve White, on Flickr

Toyota GT86 GT4 (86) (James Fletcher/Stefan Hodgetts) by Steve White, on Flickr

Aston Martin Vantage GT3 (007) (Andrew Howard/Jonny Adam) & BMW Z4 GT3 (888) (Lee Mowle/Joe Osborne) by Steve White, on Flickr

BMW Z4 GT3 (1) (Marco Attard/Alexander Sims) by Steve White, on Flickr

Porsche 911 GT4 (49) (Graham Coomes/Jake Hill) & BMW Z4 GT3 (63) (Jon Minshaw/Phil Keen) by Steve White, on Flickr

Been a quiet August so far, but two rallycross events coming up at the end of the month: can't wait for those!

Just brought a house, so I shall be easing off on the motorsport trips for the remainder of the year: hopefully I'll still get a chance to snap some cars on track though!

Thanks very much! Feel like I am slowly improving: still an awful lot of things I want to improve at though!

Your obviously like myself in that you are your own worst critic. These images are excellent and I would imagine that perhaps your biggest secret annoyance is keeper ratio.

Certainly technically these are great mate.

Yeah, my keeper ratio is something I'm always trying to improve. If I'm shooting at "safe" shutter speeds then I tend to be pretty consistent, but once I start playing with slower speeds my ratio goes out of the window! I am getting better at guessing which slow shutter speeds are achievable and which ones are just going to end up a fuzzy mess, no matter how many times I try!

My biggest weakness at the moment is my static photography: it's rubbish! Some people seem to have an eye for making static cars (and people) look interesting, but I don't.

If I'm at a race meet I tend to want to look at moving cars rather than stationary ones, so I rather neglect paddock/car shots. The 6R4 trackday this year is the first time I've been really happy with multiple static shots I've taken. It was such a relaxed day that I was able to really take my time looking round the cars for good angles. I'm hoping that if I spend a bit more time "looking" for static shots at race meets, I might have more success. That's the theory anyway...

I'm on there, user name tbtstt.

Went to Italy a couple of weekends ago for my last World Rallycross outing of the 2015. Managed to get food poisoning on the second day, but it was still a great weekend of racing. Really hope I can afford to do some more World Rallycross road trips next year, as all the rounds I've been to this year have been brilliant.
