It's a stunning looking car. I've seen it a few times now and I always think it looks too pristine to be used for rallycross!

Here is a pic I took while away in Isle of Wight StephenC gave me advice on it but wondered what people would do to the picture to enhance it and feel free to play around with it. I'm going to Goodwood FOS on 26th so will be taking lots of pics. Do you guys set your cameras up for jpeg or RAW Name: IMG_1368_zpsisyebga8.jpg

I've had a play in lightroom mate but as it was just a low quality jpg saved from Web page there wasn't much room for enhancement. I'd always shoot in raw, it holds way more information and in this case would help so much with the car been black and the sky so bright.

I am utterly useless with Photoshop, so I shoot in jpeg. As StephenC says though, if you want to do any form of editing then shoot in RAW, as it gives you far more scope for tweaks!

Few shots from my various outings last month. Blancpain GT at Brands Hatch...

What is the difference between JPEG and RAW in terms of amount of pictures on a SD card? 10 pics difference between them or more

No website as such, but I have got an account on Flickr. All my event albums can be viewed here:

Or you can just view all my pictures in one long stream here:

The file size is obviously going to vary between camera types. I don't think there is a fixed ratio for jpeg versus RAW, but I'm sure that RAW files are at least the twice the size.

(I'd wait for one of the experts to verify that though, as I'm taking an uneducated guess!)

I'll have a look at those pics as I want to get some more ideas of how to shot when I go to Goodwood FOS on Sunday. I have a Canon 1200d with a 18-55mm and a 75-300mm lenses, a monopod and a polarising filter

file size from raw to jpg is huge, BUT, with a 16gb or greater card you really aren't going to feel it. And the benefits out way that anyway. I think my 32gb card hold 1200 raw files roughly, I never even get near that amount even on a full days shooting. And then you format it ready for the next day once you've uploaded to your computer.

Make sure you get up to the rally stage: it's great to have a wander round it with a camera!

As I said...

Not long now and can't wait first time I've ever been to Goodwood. That was the whole point of buying the camera and the test session while away to make sure I get the best pictures I can and remember everything. Not sure if I should take the monopod with me what do you think?

me personally have never used a monopod for any of my photos. Panning at 1/60 is still successful even with a very large heavy lens (400mm), but that's my preference. You may find it easier with? I can only see it getting in the way.

Its normally a very busy event and there is a lot to see, so don't spend too much time waiting for people to get out of the way to take pictures!

I used to do two days at the FoS, but the cost keeps creeping up every year so I just do the Saturday now.

I thought Sunday might be the better day so that's why we are going then can't wait might have to look at the map just to know where everything is. Should I take the polarising filter or not?

I'm not a filter user so, once again, I would wait for the expert opinion on that one!

Sunday concludes with the "shootout" up the hill, so it's the day to go if you want to see the fastest runs up the hillclimb course.

As I am only doing one day at Goodwood I like to stay as late as possible (in order to see everything) and I prefer to do that on a day when I haven't got to be up for work the next morning: so it's got to be Saturday. There are often casualties on the rally stage over the course of the weekend, so going on Saturday means you normally get to see more variety up there.

Saturday or Sunday you will have a good day!

Getting there early would be my biggest tip. Yeah, the quality of food is usually good, but the prices are high. The missus and I have taken a bag of food the last few years; its a pain in the arse carrying it round in the morning, but it saves a fortune during lunch!

The program is good but ridiculously overpriced. I religiously bought one the first few years I went, but as the cost has crept up I have stopped bothering. If it's your first year going then its worth getting one though as it will give you an idea where everything is and exactly what cars you can expect to see in each of the groups.

The day is really what you make of it. There is a timetable on the FoS website for when each group of cars runs up the hill...

https://www.goodwood.com/flagship-ev...HRD5AJ,FOJL7,1

...I usually do the paddocks in the morning, stopping beside the hillclimb when a group of cars I want to see running is going up the hill. I have a quick look at the trade areas just before lunch, then head up the hill to the rally stage for the afternoon.

The shootout is normally around 4 on the Sunday, so if I were you I'd make sure I was within sight of the hillclimb course around then. You might find you have been distracted by something else though: that tends to happen to me a lot at the FoS!

Ok sounds like me and my friend are going to be very busy all day lol. I'll have to talk to him about food and what he wants to do as he has been before. What sort of merchandise do they do?

Oh yeah, there isn't a shortage of things to look at! As I say though, the day is what you make it. Some people don't care about the trade stuff and just spend all day on the hillclimb. I prefer spectating on the rally stage to the hillclimb, so I tend to spend a lot more time there: horses for courses and all that.

There are usually a couple of official Goodwood shops on site where you can buy various branded Goodwood things (clothes, books, DVD's etc.). The trade area has a variety of stands; mainly clothing, models and motorsport collectibles, but there are often other random stands mixed in there.

The majority of trade stands at Goodwood tend to be pretty high end, so brace your wallet if you start shopping!

Polarising filter is very handy for still shots, especially if it's a sunny day. Often find the colour comes out so much truer (car body) and also less reflections (distractions) in the glass. But, if it isn't sunny and your not using fast glass (f2.8 etc) then I find the loss of light the filter brings and therefore longer exposure needed then the quality can suffer. So in them cases I take it off. Track action, again if it's sunny and your not having exposure troubles then by all means get it on, I really like the difference it makes. Just make sure it's spotless as you don't want to ruin your entire set due to a bit of dirty glass on the front. Also be aware you need to keep adjusting it to suit where the light is coming from as you move around. Not difficult but sometimes end up forgetting

This pic for example. Without the filter the windscreen would have just been pretty much a reflection like the side windows. With the filter I hold it in my hand and twist it until I cut reflections in the plane I'm interested in (screen for example here, you could choose side windows if you wanted) and then Mount it the same on the lens.

I fit my polariser onto my lens and also read you need to be 90 degrees to the sun for it to work but from what your saying its doesn't make a huge difference unless you forget to to turn it lol.
I like that shot was that at 1/60

It doesn't have to be 90° exactly. The arrow on mine works when you point it at the angle of the sun relative to you. But, by shifting it marginally you can choose which reflected light it blocks. So in that shot I deliberately chose it to block the windscreen angle as that's what I wanted. Difficult to set up as the cars are flying past and your trying different angles with the polariser. That one was 1/80 mate. 200mm , f13 and ISO200.

Well it looks like I won't be taking any pictures at Goodwood this weekend: came off my bike this morning and I've fractured my elbow, so I'm not sure how steady I'll be with a camera!

Y O U D O N U T lol. Sorry to hear that mate and hope you make a speedy recovery. I'll try and get some cool pics for ya.

Stephen I see I'll have to play around more with it on the day and see what I get then but if I can capture a pic like that yellow escort I'll be really happy. I only hope it's dry and not raining like this.

Right guys where do I start........ I had a mixed result with my photos and got annoyed a bit. My panning shots were hit a miss, when I was doing a few very quick pics one after another my camera went from the 1/80 to 1/640 without me realising making my pics super dark ( I used RAW) because not enough light and did the same thing on the rally stage. I've uploaded them to my computer just need to play with them then stick them on photobucket.

Ah, maybe should have said to put it in S mode for shutter priority for panning shots. So you choose the speed and it adjusts aperture for you. And also set auto ISO so you definitely get what you asked for. And then for walkabout shots set in A so you chose aperture and therfore the depth of field that you want. Luckily with raw you may have enough detail to recover some of the shots you think you may have lost.
