Well i think my skill or lack of definitely shows in these firework pics... i didnt have a tripod and there was nowhere appropriate for me to rest my camera! so freehand was fun... lol
Think i need to get a tripod before i do any more night shots of this sort, i wanted to get some trailing light pics in the next few days, but without a tripod i cant see it working.
Anyone offer any advice?
Sarah

manual, iso was at 100 and shutter speed was 1/15 ( i think, i was holding it down for random amounts of time to see the difference,)aperture was 8 and then i adjusted it to 11 and 16 respectively.
I said that to Lee, he just thinks im crap at taking photos The wind was shocking too which wont have helped. Think ill get a tripod so i can get some better pics

as a general rule for hand held shots don't allow the shutter speed to drop below the focal length of the lens.
ie, 1/50th for a 50mm prime, 1/200th for a 200mm telephoto lens.
Regarding trailing light shots if you don't have a tripod then resting it on something is the only option. Hope all that helps.

Ill have to read up on that, how do you know if it drops below the focal length?

I'm not sure on your camera, on mine there is an LCD display on the top of the camera and when looking through the viewfinder it also displays the shutter speed etc, as for focal length have a look at the lens markings to determine what focal length the lens is. You can turn up the ISO to get faster shutter speeds, this is because the sensitivity to light is being increased. The flip side of this is that image quality will decrease and more noise becomes apparant.
I think you bought the Sony and i've no idea of their workings i'm afraid. It's just a general advice to avoid camera shake with handheld shots, with a tripod you can take as long as you like
Matt.

Nomad - your garden seems like a wildlife reserve yet another quality photo from you
Sarah - Yeah you deffo need a tripod, good efforts without tho
Matt - that 12-24 lens certainly seems to be delivering the goods, those photos of the bairn are pin sharp
I've been to a fireworks display tonight and believe it or not didn't get any photos
Anyway, i went out afterwards and snapped these to make up for it.
and saying as the Autumn photo competition is now finished i can add my entry photo to this thread

Cheers Red, those shots with the water almost have an etheral quality to them when it looks smooth like that.
Nikon 24-70mm by the way, not 12-24

i havent tried to do any fireworks this year, i dont know what the guide says but i would set the camera to manual ,set the lens to manual and use infinity marker, use F11 , iso as low as it goes, then experiment with shutter speeds of 1 and 2 seconds, tripod is a must to avoid shake,
i like the light trails Red and the bridge is good too,
Muska the nephew pics are really good, getting down to their level is important , eye contact would have nice but it doesnt detract, cheers martyn

Matt - Thanks I know it's a 24-70mm lens you've got, i even went back and re-read your post to double check before wrongly typing out my post Think i've got a 12-24mm lens on my mind, i really fancy one but cant justify the expenditure at the moment.
Martyn - thanks What you just said was basically what the fireworks guide advised you to do
Forgot to include this slightly wider angle view of the late night Tyne

Great to see the photos of Newcastle, can't believe how much it's changed, I grew up there but haven't been back for quite a while now that I'm living in Hong Kong and China.
There are so many places here for great photos too, must find more time though. I've been more into portrait work but have planned more time to travel in China for more landscape work!
We're very lucky in that we pay a lot less for the equipment in Hong Kong (tax free) and I get wholesale prices too, takes some of the pain out of investing in good lenses!!!
Keep up the good work everyone!!!

Captain500rs - The Penshaw photos are canny, i've been up there briefly myself and when i returned home i wasnt overly impressed with my photo's, i want to go back sometime and retake them.
The action shots you posted were pretty good i reckon, the planes were all in focus and mainly central in the shot.
Try having a read on the rule of thirds, golden section rule, diagonal rule for guidance
http://www.colorpilot.com/comp_rules.html
You wont regret it
Some photo's from over that side of the world would be great whenever i think of Hong Kong etc i think bright neon lights n busy streets!
When did you leave Newcastle? It's really came on leaps and bounds since around 2000. The Quayside area is now a photography hotspot, lol.
PS you're a lucky git being able to get cheap lenses n equipment,... i hate you
