awe thanks guys, the lens was a 70-200mm nikon, i also used a x2 convertor making it 400mm at F5.6. the ideal is to get in close to get the feather texture, if you take a long shot and crop you lose too much detail, the only downside is DOF, the closer you are the less depth of field you have,
heres a pic of a sparrowhawk that came into my garden, it was a dull day but luckily i had a monopod to hand, the shot was about 1/15th of a sec at 400mm, vr and monopod saved the day. cheers nomad ps it was shot through double glazed windows so is very soft,

i would suggest for all the newbies that are looking to get into photography should take trip here
http://www.photoinf.com/
lots of tips and tricks for composition,
composition rules have been in place for thousands of years, they work because they are tried and trusted,
i saw some pics in a mag recently where the photographer didnt adhere to any composition rules at all,
he said he didnt believe in them and rules were just meant to be broken, boy were his pictures crap, cheers nomad

Few from tonights shoot... started off at the Tees Barrage
Then headed up to Angel Of The North turned out a bit grainy but i still like it.
Had a few stop offs on the journey from teesside to gateshead but the results of those pics werent great

like the tees barrage shot, the blur of the water shows its taken with a slow shutter speed, i dont know why some shots are coming out grainy, if you post your exif data for the angel of the north we might be able to help, sometimes if the exposure isnt quite right and you adjust in photoshop its possible that you lift the grain from the shadows as you bring the exposure up, another possibility is you maybe using a high iso (or auto iso), for long exposures you want lowest iso your camera has,
heres a composition type of picture, your eyes read a photograph like a page, they start from left to right (maybe not chinese people lol), the idea is once you get to the wing your drawn down towards the centre of attention, lastly anything that is perceived to be moving needs space to move into , if this was a tight crop your eye would leave the page as it automatically follows the flight of the gull., cheers martyn

A small aperture to get all of the wings in focus, a long exposure, which turned out to not be long enough, so i forced it with photoshop, probably the reason it looks grainy. I'll have to return and get a proper shot with even longer exposure.

red i think it might be worth taking a few shots at different exposures , the iso was good , i think your probably right in as much that you lifted the exposure which also means lifting the noise levels,
the trouble with looking at the pic in camera is it usually looks ok, its only when you get back home and put it on a computer screen that you spot the errors, it might be worth just checking the image on your camera histogram (i usually have my histogram showing on every pic and just glance at the exposure levels) .if your peaks are all bunched up on the left hand side (i mean right up against the edge here not just towards the left) then its probably underexposed, cheers martyn ps if anyone wants to get a better understanding of histograms luminous landscape gives a good example

I think they are interchangeable but best to check with an expert, that's why I bought my D80. I already had auto focus lenses for my Nikon F65 and they were compatible with the D80... no need to start all over again if you already have kit that will work with a new body. Lenses are a money nightmare when you are buying them separately.

I paid nearly £800 for my D80 with the kit lens! Kills me to think i'd get about £350 body only now!
I finally told the mrs last night in Jan i'm ugrading to a D700... give her chance to get used to the idea!
Red, i like that pic, looks like the wings go a little out of focus towards the sides, do they move a bit when the wind blows etc?
Here is something i did a while back when it was really foggy. Taken literally on my door step...

I bought my Manfrotto 190XB tripod with 804RC2 3 way adjustable head from ebay for £110 inc delivery, much cheaper than Jessops and other high street shops
this one is slightly dearer at £126
