Some photos of a lens with the iris (diaphragm) open at various apertures...
![]() Iris fully open at f2. ![]() Iris partially closed at f5.6, you can just about make up the blades. ![]() Iris closed further at f11. ![]() Now almost completely closed at f22.

Top bollock Frog, that was ace.
One thing, is there a typo in the aperature bit?. It seems to contradict on two points a) small aperature and greater light and b)wide aperature (F2.8) when F2.8 is small in the previous paragraph. As we saw in the previous article, aperture represents the amount of light that is allowed through a lens, the smaller the aperture (e.g. F2.8), the greater amount of light passes through the lens. How much the iris is closed by is expressed by the aperture you choose when taking a picture. A wide aperture (F2.8) will leave the iris wide open, allowing lots of light through, a narrow aperture (F22) will close the iris such that very little light is allowed through.

![]() ![]() To clarify... A large (or wide) aperture is represented by a small F number (e.g. 2.8) and will let the most light through the lens. Conversely, a small (or narrow) aperture is represented by a large F number (e.g. F22), this will let the least amount of light through the lens. I got a little confused with F numbers and aperture being the size of the hole left by the iris. To pick up on your quotes: As we saw in the previous article, aperture represents the amount of light that is allowed through a lens, the smaller the aperture (e.g. F2.8), the greater amount of light passes through the lens. Should really read: the smaller the aperture number, which now is in-line with the below How much the iris is closed by is expressed by the aperture you choose when taking a picture. A wide aperture (F2.8) will leave the iris wide open, allowing lots of light through, a narrow aperture (F22) will close the iris such that very little light is allowed through. [/quote] And it's been made a sticky, result Best get writing the rest of them then ...
