VW Passat TDi turbo change, DIY job?
Looking at buying a 2001/ 2002 1.9 TDi Passat for a runabout to replace my Escort van (more seats, less van like, faster, not Ford )
One on Ebay with a suspected dead turbo. Is it a manageable DIY swap for a very average diy'er? Also what sort of prices are you looking at for a recon turbo?
I've seen a turbo rebuild kit for £115 on the bay, a recon turbo company at £325 and someone else after a basic Google got quoted £900 for the whole job from an independent local garage.
Anyone done a swap, how long? Best prices for a new / recon turbo?

Just bear in mind that because someone on ebay says "suspected turbo fault" doesnt mean the rings are not totally knackered and the real reason for the smoke, if the person selling was such an expert they would just fix it themselves to get a better price for it surely?

Told the owner the same myself yesterday Chip and he kind of told me to do one, and that he was not taking less than £1500. Didn't meet reserve on Ebay - 2 bidders, one at £1000 and one at £1220
I would have been genuinely interested if he wasn't so sure it was worth a mint, despite being broken
