I got bored of mine and bought a focus instead
One useful point though, the TD engine only makes 75bhp, 15hp up. The TDi makes 90, 30 up. Can't see it being worth while only swapping for the TD.
Also, mine wasn't great on fuel, I guess because I had my foot down a lot of the time - they're not quick.

Smile 1.8d too 1,8td

hi folks this is my first post ive sat and read posts about a non turbo to turbo swap now ive just completed the said job ,
to swap from a 1.8 d 2001 to a 1.8td ecu 1999 this is what is needed
you need the full donor car for ease.
you need to swap exhaust gear selector sub frame gearbox shafts engine of course lol then on the engine its self swap over any diff sensors for water and oil etc swap over the thermostat housing . you need the clutch cable and accelerator cable and also the bonnet if your using the intercooler engine or just the inner liner from the turbo bonnet if you have the diggi dash you need the speedo electric sensor out the top of the old box it just comes off like the cable type and swap it for the cable type and plug back into wiring and it works fine .
you will need to get rid of the pats stop solinoid from the top of the pump and replace with the old type single wire solinoid and run that from a direct ignition live so it powers up on ign on .
remove the old 3 wire soliniod ie cut the wire off and bin it remove the advance wiring device sat on top of the pump again cut and bin .
leave the egr valve with no vac pipe connected stop it from working saves blocking it off .
and i think finaly swap the plugs for the reverse as its a diff shape same wires diff plug and that should be about all you need .
when i did mine i added new timing belts and timed it correctly but when i came to start it it was over advanced to be able to start so i retarded the pump on the vernier and it fired up and runs fantastic
so this is a x ecu engine having nothing more done than every thing stipped off to do with the ecu and i single wire solinoid and a slight timing retard and it flys it does 90 mph up hill now before it would only do that over a cliff lol any ways happy swapping and ty for other threds ive picked bit up from

very useful bit of info here
mine went pop the other day (timing belt) gearbox was naffed so was just a matter of time

"so is it just a matter of getting an escort car and swapping the whole lot over as mine is N/A and was to go turbo diesel"

few scrap yards near me have some tds in have heard the sub frames are different is this true

have a 1998diesel van and can get hold of a 1997 td car?

help most appreciated

I have juat done this conversion and having the same issue with not starting off the key but when you bridge the two wires at the starter motor it turns over, is there any other way round this rather than fitting a start switch ......
thanks

Ok sorted the first problem it now turns over on the key, the problem i now have is the fuel pump......
right i am using the td engine out of a 1996 escort lx, but using my diesel gearbox, power steering pump, alternator and wiring loom.
so now i am not getting fuel out of the pump i think due to the stop soleniod but this is my problem.
the stop soleniod under the protective plate has 3 wires like my wiring loom but when connected still no fuel.
the pump also has what looks like a stop soleniod on the front of the pump should i wire this up as well.
need help on this asap as wife is kicking my ass about van lying in bits over the drive

I have done this conversion a few times before the best thing to do is take the protective cover off your pump and remove the solenoid replace it with an old style start stop solenoid and run a live from the ignition strait through to it. the stop solenoid on the front of the pump is to adjust the fueling you should also have a plug on the 3rd injector i disconnect the solenoid on the front of the pump and change no3 injector you will have to adjust the pump timing to get it running spot on hope this helps you

Thats does help alot thanks, i have got it running by changing the soleniod.
but why change the 3rd injector ?
also i have been having nothing but hassle trying to start it first time in the morning
which it did in the other car no problem.
i have changed fuel filter, filter head, glow plugs which are working perfect, but it
still takes atleast 10minutes of turning over before it will start

i have just done this conversion, 1.8td from escort estate to courier van. the problem your all having with not starting with the key is the imobliser. you need the doner ecu, matching PATS box (black box near ecu), matching injector pump (from doner car), coil around ignition barrel (from doner car) and the chip in the key from the doner car (remove red tab on key)

as for all this sub frame stuff...i just changed the flywheel (only goes on one way because of CAS sensor), clutch plate and pressure plate and the proper gearbox can be used. the elec speedo doesnt operate through the ecu so the speedo will work just fine...

as for wiring, injector pump plug just needs to be rewired because wires are in different locations and 1 extra wire needs to be run for the advance solenoid, strip doner car loom to get full wires for the maf sensor, two wires go to ecu, other two are linked with other wires inside the loom its self. connector above gearbox needs to be rewired and wires for 3rd injector needs to be run. also you need to use the ecu connector from the doner car

took me a full day to do the wiring, all you need is a multimeter, soldering gun and insulation tape/shrink wrap

all clocks are working fine (neither car had rev counter)

oh i had to swap the engine mount bracket (by timing belt). this goes behind the timing belt so worth while getting a timing belt kit and doing it while its easy

ok so im a little confused i have a 99 t reg n/a van and a 96 p reg td (non intercooled) car both the same body shape front end wise why am i reading about swapping subframes engine mounts and wiring surely its just a straight plug and play job beside the imobiliser on the pump (which when i have done 1.8d to 1.8d before the imobiliser has just been taken off the pump just leaves the redlight flashing under the clock all the time

the problem arises when using an escort as a doner vehicle for a courier. the engine and gearbox mounts are different, think courier is based on fiesta chassis. no problem when using like for like swaps

thought i would bump this thread so not to clog up board space by starting a new one. i have an escort van with a n/a engine in and recently bought an escort with the tdi engine in. the tdi engine has snapped the cam belt and bent a valve and snapped the camshaft. i was just wondering will the head fit straight on off the engine i have in my van of maybe just the camshaft? valves? i dont want to be buying head gasket set and a cam belt kit if it isnt going to work . thanks all.

what engines are in each? what is printed on the cam cover of each car? DE or DI? the DE has the combustion chamber in the head

i have been toying with the idea of putting the DI head on a turbo DE to up the comp ratio and see how the engine holds lol

Hi mate thanks for the reply.

The n/a engine in the van I want to take the head off says de on the cam cover and on the td car it just says 1.8 diesel.

ok so just did some looking around the net about the combustion chamber and have read that the de engine i have in my van has the combustion chamber in the cylinder head but in the tdi engine it is built into the piston crown. is this correct? guess swapping heads is a no go then

Me too

I have a mk4 van with the older 1800 diesel think it was called the "lynx" engine, looks like an endura though ?? but isn't! lol

Cam belt let go at 85 mph so I too was thinking td route from a mk1 mondeo, did these early come pre pats?

Or do i use the stop solenoid from my mk4 as this engine has no immobilser bits and bobs.

thanks.
