125cc or more
Hi there. looking into getting into biking. something have wanted to do for a while as would be very helpful for getting round leeds traffic on a morning.
what i wanted to find out about though is this.
I really like the Yamaha R125 as the R6 and R1 are some of my favourite bikes but being that im 28 i didnt know what to do. i dont want something too powerful until im completely confident with riding as i know i will kill myself if i have something crazy powerful.
so do i get a 125cc for a few years and then upgrade or do i go for something a little more powerful? I dont really know about many other bikes but am a sucker for styling.
what do you guys think?

also i would use the bike just to go for a ride on but mainly commuting. would not be going on the motorway (maybe a little bit but mainly no)
have my sierra to go for main cruses with as i am more of a car man than a bike man. just want to try both!

Here is what you are legally allowed to do.
Trust me, once you have passed your test you will not want to stick to a 125 with all that up and down the gearbox every time you want to make progress. Something with a bit more torque and flexibility will make your commute much more enjoyable.
Most modern 4 cylinder 600s will have upwards of 70BHP, enough to get you to the legal speed limit in just one gear change and clearing 100mph with just one more, but low down (below 6k rpm) the torque is minimal and not really that suited to urban commuting.
Depending on what you want (all out sports styling or something a bit more street style) my suggestion would be to look at a 650 twin. Kawasaki ER6 has models with both styles and the parallel twin is peach of a motor with good torque lower down the rev range and is light and chuckable. Just the job for commuting.

unforunatly i couldnt live with a aprillia 125 as i am not a fan of 2 stroke engine sound. would have to be 4 stroke for me.
As for style i think i would like more sporty looks and being that i only work about 3 miles from work (still 30-45 mins in traffic) not much of a problem if the torque isnt that great low down. would just like something thats not CRAZY but not boring either that can be used to get to work and the occational little blast on a weekend. obviously want to try and keep costs down too so would need to be resonable price to buy and insure/tax etc. had a look at some 400cc bikes on net but they all seem pretty older bikes and not knowing much about bikes at the moment i wouldnt trust them reliability wise. would like something a little newer if poss.
Sorry for the ramble verbal diarrhea!

I'm fillin up now.
400s are getting rare now. I had a Honda NC30 V4, just about 60BHP (same as 1 litre car) in a frame more suited to a 12 year old but a sweet bike with great handling and a grunty V4 motor. My son also had one and still talks about it with fondness. Despite now having a Suzuki SV1000 I still remember my NC.

Ive just passed my test in june, i always wanted a r6 so i got one. think you will get bored of a 125 very quickly.
remember the bike only goes a fast as you make it go, just cos its got the power doesnt mean you have to use it all straight away.

he he thats the bit that scares me! my sierra is pretty quick and thirsty but if you drive it sensibally its not too bad. but i find it very hard to be sensible. I just dont know its at least a year away but wouldnt mind looking into doing the learning and such before i purchase a bike. think i need to go to a bike show to get some ideas

i would absolutly love to get a bike off ya but your talking to a very poor person at the moment. think after assessing the situation the r125 is too far out of my reach. would love it but i cant justify spending money on a bike that will be worth more than all our cars put together. plus i wont be in a situation to get started until next year at least as have some saving to do. if you still have it in a year or so or anyone does ill probably be on here again.
